THE DRESDEN DOLLS
RECORDING SOPHOMORE ALBUM
DVD READY FOR OCTOBER 11TH RELEASE
HEADLINING TOUR TO FOLLOW
THE DRESDEN DOLLS, from Boston, MA, will hunker down in Allaire Studios in New York from September 10-19th with producers Sean Slade & Paul Q Kolderie (Radiohead, Hole, Pixies) to record the follow-up to their critically acclaimed, self-titled debut album. The duo, called “sometimes brutal, sometimes comic, always riveting,” by The New York Times, is also preparing for the October 11th release of their first ever DVD, PARADISE. The Dolls’ plan to support that release with a North American headlining tour from October 12th to October 31st. The past two years have been a whirlwind for Amanda Palmer & Brian Viglione. They’ve traveled the world, playing sold-out shows, winning fans over with their energetic and captivating live show, showcasing Palmer’s hauntingly personal lyrics and thunderous piano playing and Viglione’s drumming versatility.
The Dresden Dolls’, as-yet-untitled sophomore album will feature road-tested songs including “Backstabber,” “Shores of California,” “Sex Changes,” “Mrs. O.,” and “My Alcoholic Friends,” among others. This sophomore album promises to retain the intensity of their debut, recorded in producer Martin Bisi’s basement (Sonic Youth, The Swans), but will take that unpolished, dangerous, lo-fi vibe steps further. “Sean and Paul have been following the band’s growth for the past two years and have a real understanding of what we’re trying to capture,” says Palmer. “The record is going to be fast and furious, immediate and raw.” The themes and lyrics for the new material will be just as eclectic as the selections from the last record, with styles that could only be created from Palmer's emotional, brutally honest palette.
The upcoming DVD, Paradise was named after the venue at which this show was recorded and is a time capsule of the magic and madness conjured that night in Boston on June 5th 2005. At 11.58pm on that Sunday, after a five hour delay that had all hands on deck scrambling trying to restore power to parts of Boston, the generators at the Paradise Theatre kicked in and the assembly of street performers, actors and vaudevillians who had been entertaining the waiting crowds cleared the way as The Dresden Dolls took to the stage. The tracks that appear on Paradise (full track listing below) were pulled from the band’s highly successful eponymous debut CD, plus four stunning cover songs that will only be available on this DVD. Says Amanda Palmer, “The DVD is crucial for us because one of the keys to fully understanding what this band is about is to see the energy we create while playing live.” Also included is an intimate hour-long documentary following the band and “The Brigade,” the collection of artists and performers that follows the band.
After wrapping up the recording of their new album, The Dresden Dolls will embark on a two-week headlining tour of the US from October 12th to October 21st. Tour stops will include the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO, Metro in Chicago, IL, St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, MI, Webster Hall in New York, NY and the Avalon Ballroom in their hometown of Boston, MA. As their cache has increased so has their production, with the band adding professional artistic directors on the road, insuring that the pre and post-show antics are taken to an entirely new level of intensity.
Comprised of pianist/singer Palmer and drummer/guitarist Viglione, The Dresden Dolls’ sound and image resonates a combination of the smoky cellars of a Weimar-era cabaret with the full fury of rock n’ roll. The national buzz has built steadily through rave reviews in Flaunt, Soma, The New York Times, LA Times, Under the Radar, Boston Globe and more as well as by making their national late night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Additionally, MTV2 and MTVu have shown considerable support for the band by playing the videos for “Girl Anachronism” and “Coin-Operated Boy”- the latter was named one of the 10 BEST videos of 2004 by MTV’s Subterranean- as voted on by the audience. Additionally the band was hand-picked by Trent Reznor to be direct support on the acclaimed Nine Inch Nails 2005 US tour and played the Coachella Festival. To date the band’s debut album has sold over 100,000 copies.

Wow. That press release was full of typos. What a bunch of bastards!
Seriously, I'm excited, but the bit about "four covers" seems a bit odd. I'm guessing they meant two, with a third non-album track (CL). Maybe they had "Two-Headed Boy" in mind? Easter egg, perhaps? We'll find out soon enough.
Joel, is it safe to assume copies will be sold during next month's tour? I'd imagine so but want to check, especially since new merch isn't always available during the first show or two. |

Yeah.. I was sure that they were pulling Amsterdam from the Roskilde show. I could be wrong. I would hope that the DVD's will be there.
I will believe it when I am holding it in my hand!! |

yeah, they identified the four covers from the show (war pigs, pierre, 2HB, and amsterdam) but maybe they forgot that two were edited out? or perhaps they are just available separate from the "feature presentation".
personally I am just thrilled that Alcoholic Friends is confirmed for the new album... that's all I needed to know! |

i'm sure both, plus a store near you! but i'd order it from the dolls site, that's always the best place to get stuff save buying it from them at a show. |

If it's released in Japan we can pretend like that'll be released Oct 9th because media is relealsed there on Sundays...
I wonder how many self-titleds they sold before Road Runner re-released it and then before they re-did the Artwork for Wal-Mart..
I've always assumed that those songs were shoe-ins for the new record except for Mrs. O. However I am glad that one will have a proper studio recording. I'm really hoping that they have a bunch of new songs they've never done live so when I listen to it it's not all old stuff.
I want to make predictions for what the album will start and end with from songs we know. Nothing in between just songs starting and ending it. I'm gonna say that Modern Moonlight will start off the album.. it seems appropriate given modern day politics and it's a nice upbeat tune. I'd love to see Boston be the closing track for obvious relations to the last song from their first record.. Now that's the song I cannot wait for a studio version of.
I'd like to end by saying I hope they keep it short and sweet like the first album and save some songs they've done live in the past two years still just live.. To give some of us that power of knowing songs that aren't on the records.. haha.. A secret song would be killer.. I vote for Sorry Bunch
PS I'm sad Glass Slipper isn't gonna be on the dvd I've started to enjoy that song a lot.. anddd I think it's funny the article called it the "Paradise Theater" when it's the Paradise Rock Club! |

Actually, I think they're looser w/ dates. The self-titled album came out on a Wednesday. Anyway, I checked w/ Roadrunner Japan and it's not on the schedule yet. The DVD probably will come out in Japan eventually, but not early, or maybe not even this year.

I think a Roadrunner press release mentioned ~50,000 copies but I don't know if that included the initial re-release, digital downloads (iTunes and...ummm, the company that originally sold MP3s), etc.
This useless info has been brought to you by the letter O and the number 2. |
