Title: Acoustic Nightmare!
Post by: MauraLeeBee on March 07, 2010, 08:28:29 PM
So my school does this thing every year called "The Acoustic Cafe", which is basically they let a bunch of poets and acoustic artists take over the little theater for a whole night of performances. My audition was Friday, and I was originally supposed to do this with a close friend of mine that plays guitar, but has since then dropped from the project (for reasons she has yet to tell me). So, that leaves me with my piano, my voice, and a ukulele on the way.

My problem now is figuring out a set list. Most people are doing two or three songs, and I'd like to follow suit. So far, I've saved the chords for "Giving Up" by Ingrid Michaelson onto my computer, and am planning to do a rendition of it on my uke when it arrives. Now, my main issue is having trouble reading sheet music (mainly because I only recently learned how to read bass clef, and I'm struggling big time). In a nutshell, I need fairly self-explanatory songs that I can figure out in the next three weeks, and that are "school appropriate" :eyeroll: . So far, that's been my only issue. I was going to (maybe) do "Us" by Regina Spektor, but it mentions nooses, so that's a bit out of the question. I might do "Speechless" by Lady Gaga, but I'm not sure.

So far

Definite:
Giving Up - Ingrid Michaelson (uke)

Maybe:
Speechless - Lady Gaga (piano)
Samson - Regina Spektor (piano)
Astronaut - Amanda Palmer (piano)
Strength in Music - Amanda Palmer (piano)
Lucky Penny - Regina Spektor (piano. PLEASE PM THE CHORDS IF YOU HAVE)

And please don't be afraid to mention an artist I don't know. I'm always willing to get into new bands/artists, and that is the least of my issues right now. Suggest away! <3

Much help is forever appreciated. <3

The Wiki page says it's an "Unreleased live song", but if I have heard it, it must be pretty well known......

CeeGBee: Ahaha I totally would if it wouldn't take a year and a day to play. xD

overratedtoejam: Know the song, not my favorite. I shall look into it though.

hurricane hugo: .... I enjoyed that somewhat. x)

Also, I'm kind of in love with Lucky Penny. If someone could pm me the chords, I would be forever grateful. <3

"Fidelity" by Regina Spektor is sort of easy, and a nice alternative to "Us".

Some other artists to look into would be Matt Pond PA, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sea Wolf.

I can't seem to find the tabs to "Fidelity", otherwise I would do it. I also considered Neutral Milk Hotel or Sea Wolf, but NMH doesn't really transpose well to piano, and the only couple of SeaWolf songs I know are really slow (but so good!). I'll look a bit more into it when I get the chance.

Also, a note: I'm looking only for piano songs, or songs that might sound good on a piano. I'm only playing "Giving Up" on the uke (because I'm only JUST getting it on Friday).

If I didn't miss the boat on this, I highly recommend something by the mountain goats. Island Garden Song from The Coroner's Gambit is great on uke, (especially if you play it a step lower so there aren't any sharp chords) as is Song for Dennis Brown from The Sunset Tree.

Thanks guys, but I decided to do "Strength in Music" and "Glitter in the Air". I really appreciated all of your suggestions though.

In the meantime, however, could someone please help me find the piano chords to "Glitter in the Air"? All help is, again, much appreciated. :)

Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground

EDIT: I tried to find the live version from viva wisconsin. couldnt find it. in this version the piano is much more stronger than in the studio recording.

If you wanna do a ukulele song, try this on:

Noah and The Whale - Five Years time

Freebird is like the greatest suggestion ever!! Haha

My serious Regina suggestion is Rejazz if your feeling brave and do it without any accompaniment.

Antony And The Johnsons is mainly just piano and voice and you would automatically be the coolest person in your school if you pulled one of those tunes out of the bag!

Edit: Is this post way to late and the thing is already done?

Yeah, the thing's done, but I'm still up for suggestions for next year!

Rejazz isn't a bad choice. Definitely a consideration.  O0

maybe this if it works with a female lead.  (never heard a girl sing it)

or this by nick

or maybe not by Cat Power

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vj_tR4p184

or maybe check out albums by beth orton, nina nastasia, emiliana torrini, jolie holland, gillian welch, ani difranco and cat power.  all are acoustic friendly and feature great songs by female artists
