Title: Guide to Amanda's Music
Post by: BATTEREDxBRIDExLUVR! on November 15, 2007, 03:59:40 PM
GET IT ALL AT: amandapalmer.bandcamp.com
this list does not include covers- there are literally hundreds (i think)

A Is For Accident (2002)

The Dresden Dolls (2003)

Yes, Virginia... (2005)

No, Virginia... (2008)

Who Killed Amanda Palmer (2008)

Who Killed Amanda Palmer (Bonus Material) (2008)

"The Truth..." - Single (2010)

Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under (2011)

Ukulele Anthem - Single (2011)

An Evening With Neil Gaiman & Amanda Palmer (2012)

Theatre Is Evil (2012)

Theatre is Evil (Bonus Material & B-Sides) (2012)

Other Songs - These can be found on youtube

Collaborations

Songs not for sale on bandcamp aren't released, are not considered finished, and are not yet available. Because she and her team are so tech-savvy, a good rule of thumb is that if Amanda wants you to hear a song, it will be extremely easy to find, i.e. on her bandcamp or able to be located on youtube within twenty seconds.[/list]

Can I have BATTERED BRIDE?!!? ZOMG PLZ?

Actually, could someone upload Astronaut and Guitar Hero? I have no clue how to rip audio from youtube.

Whoever does it should upload to Box.net so they're there forever and the links won't expire. :)

I could be a jerk and say:

but that site never worked for me, and I hate it when people do that.

Astronaut

The Living Room

Thanks everyone, I placed links to all the songs to make things even easier on everyone. I'll clean it up a bit later. If anyone has any objections to any of this, I will gladly remove this thread, though I don't think I'm breaking any rules; every single link, aside from the youtube rips, was found on the official site, the brigade site, or automatic joy.

Hey, I was snooping around earlier, and found lyrics to a couple of unfamiliar songs.. I see on the first post that Dear Jenny is not shared (wish it was ):  ) and that there are no recordings of Battered Bride (strange) but what about the song Bitter?

I should have mentioned that; it's only been played solo, and is not shared per taper's request. I think that I will try to make this into a list of all songs.

QUESTION: Should I add covers to this post?

I was wondering about that, I think you should, but definately keep them seperate. Also you should make sure to mark covers that have studio recordings.

By the way if any of those solo songs up there that don't have links are shared/available or whatever, they would be greatly appreciated.

And what about that one song, uhauls and ryders? I don' think its shared but you could add it to the list.

huh, I noticed that too, then again, that site hasnt updated in a long time, and in fact, the site is © 2005.

If you're talking about my site, I'm not sure why any links wouldn't be working, since I haven't changed anything and all the files are still in the same spots as far as I'm aware.

And honestly I haven't done much updating for a few reasons, but none of them are very good.  I was told at one point that all of the not-already-released solo stuff from Amanda was off limits to be shared, so I haven't put my recording of her show online.  On top of all that, the Dolls haven't exactly been putting out any new material besides covers since 2004ish, so I dunno I got bored.  I was in the process of putting all the shows I have in full online to be downloaded, but that got derailed by my making a blog site for all the other artists I record as well... so yeah.

http://automaticjoy.com/flac/

There are some full recordings, although not in mp3 but in FLAC.   There's a Night Reconnaissance recording in the show, so it's around.  There's also a handful of other shows in the /shows folder in mp3 already but I guess I never made links to them.

/automaticjoy.com/mp3/shows/2004-10-13-Birmingham/
/automaticjoy.com/mp3/shows/2005-10-13-Kansas_City/
/automaticjoy.com/mp3/shows/2005-10-14-Iowa_City/
/automaticjoy.com/mp3/shows/2005-10-15-Chicago/
/automaticjoy.com/mp3/shows/2006-07-30-San_Francisco/

oops, there's a recording of night recon in mp3, enjoy

/automaticjoy.com/mp3/shows/2006-10-12-San_Francisco/
/automaticjoy.com/mp3/shows/dresdendolls2006-10-13.mp3/

if any of the songs are better than the stuff you've got linked elsewhere, feel free to use 'em.

also, i haven't been following too closely for a while on things and if there are recordings of shows that I've missed I'd really appreciate a copy or getting in touch with the taper and seeing if I can't post their entire show for everyone at some point whenever I muster the time and motivation to update and junk.    Also, I'm not great with the HTML and making things look pretty on a webpage, so that's kinda why I've slacked on updating things.  (I keep saying i'm gonna take a class... never do... this is a common theme!).   So yeah, sorry.    (i never really got much feedback on the site in general, so I really didn't know if people even cared or not, you know?)

It's also somewhat obvious that only songs with an * have an mp3. Which none of them have. Those are links to the lyrics.

Okay. I have given the list a makeover, sort of, and have added new songs and a few new links.

I'm sort of hoping that this thread could possibly take over for the other two songlist threads, as they don't seem to have anyone updating them anymore? Regardless, I'll keep updating this since I don't think it should cause a problem.

If anyone has any suggestions for making this better, do tell. Also, any sharable recordings of Christopher Lydon, Thirty Whacks, and any others would be cool.

"Follow" is a song Amanda mentioned in the original thread for the pieces of her demo on tdbb. Apparently, Mary's Surgeon, Bluesboy, etc. are only roughly half of what was on the original tape. She mentioned a song called "Follow" which she said was one of the better songs.

Cool as hell story that I might as well just throw in here:
I was walking around South Street in Philly a few days ago and went into one of the record stores down there. To my surprise, they were selling A for Accident. Now I had no excuse not to buy it.  So...yeah, I have all these songs, and it makes me happy.

...Except for the fact that some of the links aren't working for me for reasons as of now unknown.

why are there soooo many un-shared amanda palmer songs?

Amanda doesn't mind songs being shared; the only songs that have a hold on them are anything from the upcoming album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer?. However, because she has not specified what exactly is going to be on it yet, there is a ban on all previously unreleased material until we know. Once we find it, though, expect to find alot more songs for download.

Extremely frustrating news. I was attempting to put up lyrics for the songs and got up to Dear Jenny done and tried to save it. Apparently there is a 20000 character limit to posts. That's reasonable, but I'm still frustrated. u.u So, ideas?

I'm thinking of stealing the first four posts. One for Dolls, one for newAmanda, one for oldAmanda, and one for covers. How is that idea?

Is Amanda's cover of Chopin's Nocturne, Op. 9 No. 2 shared? Please, please, please tell me it's shared. I've always wanted to hear her do something classical.

I have it but don't know if it should be shared. I'd be more than happy to if others think it'll be ok, otherwise I'm sure you can find it somewhere on the net if you look around enough. I personally prefer the unedited version but understand why it was changed.

I forget what site it was on, but sometime recently there was a mention somewhere on the Box about a site where the Dolls had an old profile with a playlist on it (kind of like Myspace, only not) and the old version of Sing was on there. It wasn't too long ago, it should be easy to find it if you check back through the Box a bit. I think it was in General Discussion but I'm not sure. Otherwise it was in News.

EDIT: This thread (http://www.theshadowbox.net/forum/index.php?topic=2754.0) which had a link to this site (http://vampirefreaks.com/u/thedresdendolls/) with the song on it.

If Night R really has switched over to a dolls song then it must be really amazing with Brian playing drums on it. Hopefully its as good(or better) as Astronaut w/drums.

You're saying it like Brian's a last resort.

Night Reconnaissance and Astronaut are totally different songs, with or without Brian, and there's no reason for you to insist on pitting every single song against eachother.

No, i'm saying Night R was amazing as a solo song, and if amanda decided to switch it to a dolls song then it must be an improvement on the song. Unless i'm mistaken, i'm quite sure amanda wouldn't change it to a dolls song unless it sounds better as a dolls song.

The point i was trying to get across was:
The song is great as it is, and i can't see it getting any better, but if Amandas says its better then it must be!

ahh..

I intended for it to show the name of the song, and for the reader to follow it. But I realize now that it can give the wrong impression as far as shared status goes.

Yes, Amanda has played it often. I'll upload one soon.

Is there really no shared version of the french version of Amsterdam or just not uploaded somewhere?

Contrary to what some people believe, there are very few "unshared" songs.  ALL covers are shared as far as the songs themselves go.  There is probably just no uploaded mp3 of what you're looking for.

Because of this, and things like sendspace/sharespace/etc, I'd really like to get off my ass and mirror all these songs on my page if that's possible.  (edit: didn't know there weren't anymore sendspace links, so that's kinda awesome already but I don't know what box.net is so I can help with those too..)

I'm going to spend a while tomorrow going and downloading everything individually and re-posting it if nobody has any objections.   I may have a handful of songs to add to this whole project as well, I don't know.  I'm going to spend even more time this week figuring out what is and isn't with my site and everyone else's and try to help out a lot more than I have in the last couple years.

And if anyone has the songs that aren't currently posted anywhere and they'd be willing to send them to me, I can set up FTP space or you can email them or IM them or whatevers.   (you tell me how you can get it to me, I'll make it happen).

I have all mp3 files from the website. I am more than interested in helping with this, and my contact info is in my profile.

I guess it doesn't matter either way, now. I originally had had this great vision of a website as a public archive of the Dolls, and I was trying to make some sort of a start, but I sort of gave up on that when I realized that the setlist archive was down.

Is there really no shared version of the french version of Amsterdam or just not uploaded somewhere?
Contrary to what some people believe, there are very few "unshared" songs.  ALL covers are shared as far as the songs themselves go.  There is probably just no uploaded mp3 of what you're looking for.
No, I meant whether someone knows IF there is a recording of this version so I just kindly have to ask if someone could upload it on sendspace or so or if so far noone has discovered a recording of the French version...

I just stumbled upon this short clip (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Nko5oT1joTg) of the Dolls covering "I Know It's Over" by The Smiths in Manchester.
When was this? 2006? Are there any (other) recordings of the song?

Isn´t what makes so special that song is the fact that it can only be heared if you play the vinyl? and that there are only 1111 "legal" ways to hear it... the ripped mp3 leaves all the magic and transform it into a file... you may think i am a bitch and you wouldn´t be wrong if you call me so...

Isn't that "what makes it special" also elitist? I actually think this Evelyn Evelyn thing is gimmicky, if the way Amanda describes the tour and the album release is 100% true :/

It will only serve to piss off fans who don't live anywhere near said cities with double names, or can't order online.

Meh... is elitist if you want to look it that way, i remember receiving an e-mail from Jason Webley a week before the vinyl was released and in the e-mail he said "To all of my fans... order it now... this like a special deal for my fans, the official releasing will be in a week and i don´t want any of my fans not to have it.... go go go only 1111 copies" why they did 1111 copies because Jason has maybe an obsessive compulsive disorder... i lied i only have one copy.

And its available as a free download on iTunes (in the Moshcam Podcast)

Unreleased - Songs have not been released and are not shared; respect.

also, what the fuck Ryan James. That's way not cool.

oh - my bad - after reading the thread I was under the impression that anything was cool. There was something about not sharing stuff that would be on WKAP prior to the release and I was under the impression that after the release it was kinda hands-off up-in-the-air. If it's official that it's not supposed to be shared then I won't pass it along (however I'm willing to bet it's in your collection Jesse, and you had to get it somewhere) Anyway I've heard Amanda talk at live shows about sharing stuff a few times as far as the album goes and she seemed to have the opinion that as long as you passed something her way for her art, it was all good. I.E. buy shirt, go to a show, if you download the album oh well (not her exact words, but really pretty much what she says) So I figured her attitude about sharing other things was pretty laissez-faire as well. If it's official from her that that stuff isn't supposed to get around then I will most definitely respect that.

Generally things that are unreleased shouldn't be shared, especially things like the demos.  Live recordings are one thing, because y'all could have gone to a show and taped that for yourself, so "Dear Old House" and "Trout Heart Replica" are one thing.  But if it's something that's leaked, trading it is way lame.

Thanks for clarifying, Ryan James.  It's nice to know that it's a misunderstanding rather than douchedom.

okay whoa. It was an honest mistake, I haven't been around the box in ages and really haven't kept up to speed with a lot. I mean if we're being honest with ourselves there's a lot more grey area here then there seems to be at first glance. It was a simple lack of knowledge, I'm obviously not trying to do anything to hurt Amanda in any way, that's fucking ridiculous. I've been a fan for as long as anyone here and I'm not going to start being a dick out of the blue. I don't want any negative feelings - again, honest mistake - let's let it go.

All In The Golden Afternoon should be in the Dolls songs section. It was on Amanda's demo tape in 1996, but more recently it was mentioned in The Dresden Dolls Companion on page 22 for an unreleased ep.

A good deal of the unreleased ones are extremely hard to get, if not impossible.
Some of them aren't actually out there.

bitter's not released. maybe it'll be on a dolls' cd some day, or it'll come out when amanda releases her demos.

it wouldn't make sense if valentine's was sharable because the official recording is the only one.

well technically there's a live version out there - which under Amanda's rules would be kosher to share, since it's not on the demo, however, it's not traded by tapers request - so you're still fucked. At least that's the story I've gotten about it.

No, Jesse's right - it was just the name somebody gave the file - not an official title, at least that's been my understanding. Much like Straight went around as "Hey, Bitch" for a while (although Amanda did jokingly refer to it as that in the recording - exact quote "I'm still looking for a title for that song that isn't 'hey bitch'").

Well Jesse is bitter really the title.
On the demo it's titled '1,682 [or a number close to that] minutes of wasted inspiration'.
Bitter was only the title of the live track, so it could be the same case really unless of course Amana changed it which is very possible.

Yeah, that is true. But Team A never made an official posting about it, or announced it, or advertised it in any way. It's kind of weird, though things seem to have become significantly more lax as far as new unreleased songs go; while the old ones are still all locked down, Everything unreleased played since WKAP appears to be cool by Amanda unless she's specifically stated otherwise, such as with the bed song.

three? There are four . . . and  the one I'm assuming you left out happens to be one of my favorites

Sorry, I always forget 'a is for accident' (Which is odd because it's one my favourites too)

A is for accident is still my favourite...

Well yeah, but she presumably there are recordings from after songs are written... Like she's still performing Bad Habit, so recordings from that would be labelled 2009?

Unless you're referring to some other recordings that have accurate dates on them. Thankyou very much for the list :)

I have a massive favour to ask and I appreciate if it's not possible.

I had the alternate WKAP album, but my hard drive died on me and it's the only AFP I've lost completely. So I was wondering if it's still shareable if anyone could send me a link?

If it's not shared, it's fine  :)

I downloaded it from the link Sean put up ages ago before it expired, and I guess now that my chances have gone of getting hold of it again. Boo.

Can anybody be a doll and tell me if there are any solid recordings of The Assistant & The Breakfast Summit out there for me to download - I've just realized they're the only gap in my collection of shared / buyable stuff. Danke!

edit: also if anybody else needs anything on the shared list I'd be happy to help! And I've got most of the covers out there along with quite a few live tracks.

also - resurrecting this from pages ago - - there was a live recording of Valentines going around as Eclectic Song, I most def. had it on my old computer probably three years ago, but again, I think it wasn't going around due to taper's request - not sure. Does anybody actually have this still???

The lyrics from the older versions are so much better. The one that was played at the knitting factory (I think) is my favourite.

Maybe I missed it somewhere along the line, but was there ever an 'official' version of the Bed Song released? I know the one that Amanda played on the BBC is freely available, but to my recollection, she wasn't particularly happy with how it turned out, so I was wondering if there was another one around?

living room should be on amanda's official channel, and not mine on an official estradasphere one. in my mind was also called hippie song and i am a badass zen motherfucker so try searching that.

four or five songs that have never been released that were on an old demo leaked five or six years ago but are gone. amanda wants to release her demos though. also, her playing them live doesn't mean they're finished, as some like i believe in airplanes aren't but were performed. no one's "lost the chance" to listen to anything. i would not be surprised if they were all eventually released in one form or another.

thanx Jesse i managed to find the three i was lookin for. as for the rest by "losing my chance", i was trying to express how left out i'm feeling when i read all those comments about how great are some of Amanda's old "unreleased" stuff. i'm a fan of hers since 2006, but i only started being a shadowboxer the last couple of years, so it seems i missed a whole lot of the fun that was going around in the old boards.

Mark!
i believe the 5-6 songs mentioned are Sandy's Song, Pro-vanity,  Echo gallery, Mary's Surgeon, Bluesboy and June is bustin out all over. there is a thread of an old demo tape somewhere, with a great deal of discussion around these songs, somewhere in the old box.

are there studio versions of songs that were possibilities for WKAP?? (like, for instance, ambien, rhyme and rhythm, the assistant, the living room, berlin, grown man cry, flowers, kaledrina, etc.)
if so, are they floating around, available to us? i would really love to have them, if possible (ambien is my absolutely favorite song by amanda lyric wise).

Hi I have a bit of a question. Okay a while back I read the lyrics for Valentines on songmeanings.com, and I thought the lyrics were really beautiful. If anyone owns Between The Lines More Songs From The Blue Bird Diaries can you tell me if the album is worth the money. Also if you have any information about the sound style of Valentines that would be appreciated, 25 dollars is a lot for me to spend on a song I have never heard (but has beautifully tragic lyrics, if those were even the true lyrics.)

Sorry if my question was too specific.

Sean posted
Did anyone catch the names of amanda's new songs?
Of course, they might change ...
I believe that some of them do not have official titles yet. Amanda is yet to announce their names/working titles.

Nothing's "official" 'till they're out - which is going to be a while from now - but they do all have names. Call 'em "working titles" or what you will, but the band were referring to everything proper, in soundcheck and the studio. A will maybe mention that info in the new blog, coming...

amanda also said a bit about them in her latest blog

i've heard them at the June concerts.
they are worth waiting for,
but, imho, need more work

The Breakfast Summit is the musical narration of a hypothetical meeting (over breakfast)
of.... lemme think, Amanda, Tori Amos, Courtney Love, Avril Lavigne, Bjork... Liz Phair...
anyone else?  Pink ...and they discuss the state and status of women in the recording industry.

It's pretty clever.

The originally wasn't very HQ, very much like "start recording and just play..." Amanda stops playing, and Ben Folds' is heard calling her something like "you fucking idiot keep playing!" all in good fun. The last time I looked for this song, I found it through google.. something like hype machine. If I am remembering correctly - and I may not be - I think amanda released this demo through an old blog post.

if no one else messages becca i might later, but now that i've done a little digging my mind is refreshed a bit as to what might have made me think what i thought

http://dresdendollsdiary.blogspot.com/2004/05/052304.html

at risk of sounding crazy, i think my thought process at the time of whenever this idea was cemented into my brain was something like this:

*amanda got a new keyboard
*amanda wanted to try it out
*she decided to demo a new song on it
*that was the breakfast summit
*i think there was something about amanda having a yamaha keyboard which sounded nicer than her kurzweil but she kept it at home for demoing or something, like there was some reason why she didn't tour with it
*the song sounded like a keyboard to me, but it definitely wasnt her kurzweil
*it doesn't sound like the wkap demos
*the person at the end's voice sounded, to me, like brian's so much i never questioned it (but i'm really not familiar with ben's voice)

so yeah. i'm not saying any of this to continue a source-less argument or anything, just putting my thoughts down in case we don't get an answer. a lot of these ideas, in my memory, felt like things i thought were confirmed, but apparently not. hm. now i really can't wait to find out!

ahh. okay. we'll see.
but i KNEW that i read a blog about it, couldn't find it, but knew i wasn't making it up. thank you for linking it. I think amanda's piano is a Yamaha. at the MIT webcast she said something about using Yamahas because they don't break (in regards to the MIT piano breaking while she played)

Just how impossible is it to find a decently priced copy of the split 7" she did with Murder By Death?
well, they have removed it from their merch store, so i guess it's sold out, but a couple of months ago i saw a copy on ebay for like $10. keep checking ebay and maybe another will pop up.

Also i remember last year Sylvia, who does some fantastic AFP related artwork, was auctioning some stuff, and the vinyl was one of them, but i don't know if she got around to sell it in the end. check out these posts and maybe sent her an email:

;D  I found one on Discogs!
Disgustingly happy! Not just because of Amanda, but I love MBD too!  :love5:
