AHHHHH Dear Jenny!

Finally I can find out if singing it to the tune of "My Favorite Things" was appropriate or not.

Thanks for the info, doritojoe, I'll be looking forward to this.

Hm. I would have traded Pretty in Pink thirty times over for a cleaned up version of Night@theRoses.

Glass Slipper...
Bank of Boston beauty Queen...
Thirty Whacks...
The Time Has Come...

 :'( :'(

I'm guessing though, that the song from the video must have been Dear Jenny then.

This still looks to be a world better than YV.

I'm a little sad about the exclusion of Kaledrina and Thirty Whacks, myself.
But the inclusion of Dear Jenny and The Kill (even though I knew that was coming) makes it better.

*shrugs*

Dear Jenny, Ultima Esperanza, The Gardener, Boston, Night Recon = epic win
Lonesome Organist re-release = space would be better spent on something else
lack of Night @ the Roses, Glass Slipper, Kaledrina, Will = should be in there where Lonesome Organist is

In spite of that, I think I'll quite enjoy this record. At least as much as YV, and maybe even almost as much as the self-titled.

Aweeesome! Finally some news on No, Virginia.
I'm not disappointed at all about the addition of Pretty In Pink and Lonesome Organist, at least the Dolls get to properly release them.
Though I was really hoping for a clear studio recording of Thirty Whacks, even though I knew it was unlikely. It would've sounded better on a grand anyway.

I totally wasn't expecting the Sheep Song, but I'm excited anywho.

I would also like official proof of this.

i really like the tracklist (assuming it's correct). A Night At The Roses is one of my favourites, but i have it on vinyl so that makes me happy enough. so stoked about Sheep Song and The Kill :glasses9:

i guess this means we get sheet music in the songbook for all/most of these songs, too?

also don't forget that after this and the solo record, there'll probably be another dolls record. Maybe some songs aren't on here because they were too good for a B-sides album?

I'm a bit sad though that Thirty Whacks isn't on there. One of my favourite tracks, but even one A Is for Accident the quality is pretty horrible.

Hm. I would have traded Pretty in Pink thirty times over for a cleaned up version of Night@theRoses.

It was released on CD last year as part of a free compilation. I'm pretty sure the comp's out-of-print but it's floating around out there. I might have a spare copy somewhere around the house....

This still looks to be a world better than YV.

Nein. I look forward to getting NV but YV is a coherent album. This is a scattershot collection of leftovers. Good leftovers, mind you, but leftovers. I have a suspicion that the flow is going to be really weird. C'est la vie.

Quote
and shit, Kaledrina has somehow managed to not make it again.  :-\

It's basically a solo song. Always has been, really. Besides, even if it did pop up, it would really mess with the flow of the album. It'd have to be a closer or something. *shrug* I do hope to hear a nice studio version someday, though. I hated it at first but it grew on me upon reflection.

I've only heard it with brian, but i would kill to here it solo!!

I've heard it at a couple of solo shows. Very lovely. It's an old (circa mid-90s?) song that I suspect has a lot of meaning to Amanda. Don't know why. I just get that feeling.
Title: Re: No, Virginia: May 20th
Post by: Emaline on March 23, 2008, 12:21:09 PM
I wonder if they are including Lonesome Organist because it was released as a single in the UK and not in the US at all? Like as a balancer.
Title: Re: No, Virginia: May 20th
Post by: BATTEREDxBRIDExLUVR! on March 23, 2008, 01:00:54 PM
I agree with the flow thing; but I don't think it was ever a priority, because NV is a collection of songs; I don't think it's really intended to be an "album."

And while Kaledrina is a very nice song regardless, I still prefer it to have Brian. The ending caught be in a way similar to the first time I heard Slide. I don't get that was severely as when it's just Amanda.

I think that, as an album, I would agree with Doug that YV > NV. But on a song by song basis, I think NV is going to be better. To me, songs like Backstabber, Alcoholic Friends, Sing, Shores of California, Necessary Evil, Delilah, and Lonesome Organist (though I suppose that's no longer applicable) will never compare to Gardener, Boston, the Kill, Ultima Esperanza, Sheep Song, Mouse, and hopefully Dear Jenny, which I think has great lyrics.
Title: Re: No, Virginia: May 20th
Post by: Musings on March 23, 2008, 01:24:45 PM
I agree that Kaledrina is better with Brian.  I also didn't like it the first few times -- similar to the way I felt about Slide, actually.

The reason I like Kaledrina and Slide is because they aren't easy to listen to; they aren't songs I can simply zone out to and get.  The buildup in Kaledrina is amazing, and you have to put the time in to get there and truly appreciate it.  It's a very dynamic, sort of novel of a song (as opposed to other songs, that are short stories).  Everytime I listen to it, I sort of get a different piece of it.  And I think that's the mark of a great song.  I think that's also why it has no easy fit in an album.

As for Yes, Virgina vs. No, Virginia:  Again, I think it's a similar thing where Yes, Virginia is definitely more accessible in terms of flow, ease of understanding and general fun.  No, Virginia is going to be harder to swallow, has little-to-no-flow, with some darker, longer, and more ballady songs like The Gardener, The Kill, and Boston, but that have great layering or "novelish" qualities to them.  I understand the choice not to put Kaledrina and Thirty Whacks because it would definitely make this the "Dark Album".

In my humble, limited musical knowledge, opinion.

Well, I suppose Glass Slipper and Thirty Whacks wouldn't have fit the mood, but I'm still a tad disappointed. Glad to see Ultima Esperanza though.

we're totally happy with the studio recording of night at the roses and we know it's downloadable. glass slipper is out since it's on "a is for". will is a done deal, released as a studio song and finito. kaledrina is not one of brian's favs and will probably find life elsewhere.

as to
"....These songs aren't here because they "weren't good enough" for Yes, Virginia. They just didn't fit...."

way not true. i thought boston was one of the best recordings from the YV session. it didnt get on because of the flow of the record.

*Starts honing Jedi mind tricks to work on Brian next time I see him.*  You willlll love Kaledrina, you willl.  I give cookie, you love Kaledrina, ok?

Although, considering how split people even here are about Kaledrina, I guess it was probably a good idea to leave it off.  If it's going to be that big of a chunk of album space.  Better to replace it with something like Boston or The Gardener, that's pretty universally considered awesome.

the time has come may always have to be content to live on A is for Accident. Thirty whacks was also vetoed for band post a-is-for,  so might join the solo collection.
battered bride will come out after i'm dead, becuase i dont love it and dont plan to re-write it.

as far as next dolls record, dont expect any re-recorded a-is-for songs.

solo record has no re-done doll songs.

Old Demo Songs: 1.1.94, Bluesboy, Echo Gallery, June is Busting Out All Over, Mary's Surgeon, Predictable Addiction, Provanity, Sandy's Song
"Seemingly Dead" Solo Songs: Boyfriend in a Coma, Valentine's, Wesleyan Burning

I can't wait to have a cleaned-up version of the Gardener. I really love it, mostly for it's theatrical potential. The song evokes images of The Book of Revelations and death. It really reminds me of this play I directed that I would like to expand upon one day, maybe for Halloween.... one day

Since you seem to be in a "answering questions" type of mood-

What will be happening with these songs?
Bitter
Colorblind
Old Demo Songs: 1.1.94, Bluesboy, Echo Gallery, June is Busting Out All Over, Mary's Surgeon, Predictable Addiction, Provanity, Sandy's Song
"Seemingly Dead" Solo Songs: Boyfriend in a Coma, Valentine's, Wesleyan Burning

bitter might find life with the dolls. i'd need to redraft the lyrics.
colorblind, who knows. maybe on next dolls record.
bluesboy, echo gallery, june, mary's suregeon, predicatble addiction, sandy's song: all maybe released someday in their current format. if i get around to it. i would love to.
boyfriend in a coma, valentine's, wesleyan fight song: i never thought these were good enough to record. probably they remain dead.
if i play live at welseyan again i'll exhume it a final time and hopefully record.
i have all this stuff on old live recordings on tape. maybe the time has come to throw them up on the net or get them otherwise out of my proverbial closet

Mary's Surgeon has always been one of my favorites.
The reply's omission of 1.1.94 and Provanity is curious.
The two Wes songs are neat.
Boyfriend in a Coma is neat to the max.

I'm happy that Colorblind might come back.

Wasn't Provanity recorded for WKAP?

And Amanda. Love the new icon.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but regarding the Amanda's new icon,  you all should read:  Frank Sinatra Has a Cold (http://www.esquire.com/features/ESQ1003-OCT_SINATRA_rev_) by Gay Talese.
which remains one of the best magazine portraits I've ever read (if not the best).

It's long but this passage:
Quote
Sinatra with a cold is Picasso without paint, Ferrari without fuel -- only worse. For the common cold robs Sinatra of that uninsurable jewel, his voice, cutting into the core of his confidence, and it affects not only his own psyche but also seems to cause a kind of psychosomatic nasal drip within dozens of people who work for him, drink with him, love him, depend on him for their own welfare and stability. A Sinatra with a cold can, in a small way, send vibrations through the entertainment industry and beyond as surely as a President of the United States, suddenly sick, can shake the national economy.
is among many of sheer awesomeness.

If only I knew the fate of the so called "Eclectic Song."

I'll keep waiting patiently.

I'm wondering if the Virginia companion is going to have both albums or they'll be seperate (I assume there will be more pages than the first companion).

i've just read through all the posts on this thread.

frankly, i'm just happy that the dolls are releasing something. i don't care if ive heard versions of the songs before, as i won't have heard what's actually on the CD.

we have the actual tracklist, we have our ideal tracklists, and there's not much point in pushing for other songs to be recorded/released/whatever--the dolls have the right to put what they want on the records.
Title: Re: No, Virginia: May 20th
Post by: matt james on March 31, 2008, 08:41:30 AM
I don't get how people can even be unhappy with the track list. I don't understand why previously released stuff should be recorded, we've already got good recordings! Now lets wait for new stuff instead of anticipating re-recordings of old stuff that we're so fond of already.
Title: Re: No, Virginia: May 20th
Post by: Matty on April 01, 2008, 12:10:44 AM
It just feels so much easier to look foward to something new when you don't constantly have that "Ooh I hope Kaledrina/Ultima Esperanza/Glass Slipper/fucking echo gallery (lol)/etc. will be on the next studio album!!1!" on your mind.

But, I agree, there are songs that will never be done, and as crazy as that makes me, I'll get over it...but I'm sure that by the 23rd dolls album in 2034 I'll still be like "come on The time has come!!" with fingers crossed.

I agree with this entirely. I think No, Virginia is kind of an "out with the old" album--and after that they may want to concentrate on new things.
This is another reason why i'm no longer interested in unshared songs--if there's a chance they could be on a forthcoming album, i DON'T want to listen to them. I remember how excited I was when my Dolls albums arrived. Out of all songs on both albums, I had heard 2.
I want to learn to love any new songs in the format they were released in, and live when I see it with my own eyes.
Basically i'm scared of ruining things for myself.

but i'm so happy with the tracklisting!!!

Why would you buy one then? The only reason i would get one is if it were a Dresden Dolls release, only because I get EVERYTHING Dolls related.

If an artist expects people to buy an album for it's collectability (is that a word?) and not it's musical aspect, that's pretty egotistical, no?

I don't like them because they sound like crap! There's a lot of "surface noise" that goes well beyond even a poorly pressed record. Pic discs are fun to look at but that's it.

(That said, I'm totally pissed that I missed out on that South of Heaven pic disc I saw at Hot Topic awhile back. "Just wait, Doug. It'll be there when you get back from the New Year's trip." Grrr!)

There's songs we all would've liked to have seen on No that didn't make it, but I'm still counting the days.

I'm especially pumped for Boston. When I saw them at the Orpheum (in Boston), they finished their main set with that song, and I hadn't heard it before. It was absolutely stellar.

Then, of course, they covered "Sweet Dreams" for the encore, which was as surprising as unexpected. I'm just saying it was cool to hear Boston in Boston, and I'm looking forward to a studio cut.

i think there's a problem with the player, or the way the file was uploaded.  it's the same version, just significantly slower - you'll notice that amanda can't sing that low (and it doesn't even sound like her...more like a bad drag queen!).

I pre-ordered mine from Newbury Comics and had an email on thursday or friday saying it had been shipped.  Hopefully it arrives soon, although I'm not sure how long it will take to get to Australia.  Our posties don't work weekends either (not sure about the American posties).

It seems that it's available instores in Australia already.  That's good I guess because they are usually really slack when it comes to new releases.

Got mine today on the way home from work.  It made me all nostalgic.  As if I wasn't made nostalgic enough by carrying drUglyBoy home from the bar this weekend and finally meeting Laurie after 5 years of shadowboxing.  Met an old-school Brigader from Detroit transplanted to Baltimore, too.  Things are coming back around.  I miss you all.  No, Virginia is calling me back.  Hi, Honeys; I'm home.

to be honest, i think it's better than yes, virginia.

The eponymous album was very intimate and emotionally raw; much of the material is in the first person and present tense and that's the overall feel of the album, I think; personal and immediate.  yes, virginia was very different, more third person voice and more looking outward at the world at large:  the Holocaust, Abortion, the Battle of the Sexes.  Obviously there were exceptions (1st Orgasm & Me&theMinibar), but they stand out as a change of pace within the album.  I think no, virginia is something of a return to the more intimate and personal, to the first person voice overall.  It doesn't have quite the raw immediacy of DD, though, because it's removed in time, more in the past tense than present.  It's a different sort of perspective on similar material as DD, I think.

Pre-ordering is not always a bad thing.
If you do it in a store then you can go to the store the day it comes out and they will have a copy reserved for you
&sometimes other perks, like a sticker or a patch.

Extras are all well and good.   I did it with Pretty Balanced, but they were only available online.  If I know a group is going to be in a local store on the day of release I just pick it up there...  plus the money saved tends to be more than the bonus patch. :D

It's really nice to have a great quality studio version of Sorry Bunch.  It's weird though, when the lyrics are different from the way I learned them and I keep singing it wrong.

Boston is such an oddball on the CD, though.  It feels like a HUGE change of pace from the rest of the album, which I've been listening to on repeat.  I love it though.  It's so sharp.  I cried when I heard it once in Providence.  The song is so much about a lover not being there for her and they played it after Half-Jack with an amazing improv intro, where Brian had totally showed off how badass he is.  But when they played Boston, he pulled back; he wasn't showing off, but rather just playing the percussion for Amanda's song, for Amanda's moment.  And I thought "He's doing exactly what she needs him to be doing."  And it was such a beautifully loving and respectful relationship that she found in Brian, while she sang the pain of not having that.  It broke my heart in such significant ways.  It changed the way I behave in my own relationships.  Listening to it on the CD reminds me of that.

Well, I can't really say much on this topic yet as I still haven't got my cd! :(  They mailed it nine days ago, and I guess Australia is a fair way away from the USA.  Loving the songs I've heard though - I especially love the pace of Ultima, it's actually not what I expected, but it think it really works in that song.  Go the new version of Night R - I think it's better than the old one that I heard.

Ok, well I'm glad it's not just me (yes I did preorder from Newbury Comics).  I was thinking that it got nicked-off with by the posties or something, but that seems unlikely if there's a heap of other people who haven't got theirs either.  Good to know.

To be honest I got sick of waiting and went and listened to it anyway.  I love it!  I especially like this version of The Gardener, for some reason I found it really sad and I wasn't in the best mood when I listen to it and it almost made me cry.  It is nice to have a studio-recorded version of Pretty in Pink - I enjoyed it and I although i have heard it before (it was a bad quality recording) this one was much better.  At first listen I wasn't a huge fan of Dear Jenny, but I think it is one that I will like after a few more listens.

I was never particularly struck by The Gardener until I listened to it on No, Virginia... through headphones. The opening minute or so where Amanda is whispering over the sparse bass line gives me goose bumps - it's almost like she's stood right behind me, making it seem sooo personal.

Awesome just doesn't begin to describe it, but my vocab isn't up to much so it'll have to do...

I got the leaked version but, i felt so dirty that i wasn´t able to listen to it, i just leaved in that zip file and i am going to open it just so i don´t have to import the cd to my computer.

It took it 7 days for my copy to arrive and it cost me like a million dollars but, it was worth it.

I was bored in a record shop yesterday and found my hands wandering to the Dolls section. This is possibly unforgivable considering I'm possibly Brighton's biggest Dolls fan, but I was shocked to see No Virginia there - didn't realise it had been released. The speed with which I rushed to the counter was lamentable given my current financial situation (I'd gone in to get Paper Television by The Blow, which I also highly recommend checking out).

Anyway, being a music critic and all, I have to admit I was a bit cynical about this record. Nyah, I know it's the Dolls and all, but any other band who had been together for the time they have and only released two records would be treated with suspicion releasing a load of B-sides and rarities with an expensive accompanying book.

It's fucking blown me away, and I've only listened to it twice (some tracks several times, of course.) I don't have a personal computer, so I've never been able to get any of these songs, download obscurities, check out footage, interviews etc. I'm glad for that, because hearing these songs for the first time has been incredible.

probably i'm the last one of this board to listen "No, Virginia..."

believe it or not.... i've not listen "No, Virginia..." yet !!!

i will listen it until July, 20.
i know that the album is actually at my home already.

it's been a hard discipline to keep my mind away of the virginia archives site.

At first I was like, this song is not for me.  And I skipped over it.
Then I started listening to it more and more.
Then it made me cry and I was hooked.
Now I listen to everyday in my car.

^ Hey, i payed 25 bucks for my copy, so that´s not expensive?

As a matter of fact, the No, Virginia is somehow a "HIT" cause it now haves the special disccount every well selled album receives and if that´s not enough so the dolls come to México.

HMV sells their cds for a hefty lot, but they have a wider range in music than many record stores out there. Except for maybe Rotate This. But Rotate This is also very expensive because they have the vintage, underground stuff that nobody's really heard of, which I think is stupid because usually underground, vintage stuff is cheap. Music World's prices range from between 10 and 25 dollars (CND). Sunrise records sell it the cheapest. Except their's is mostly used cds with tons of scratches. HMV rarely sells a cd for less than 20 dollars, but when they do you buy that cd. Usually they sell between 22 and 32 dollars. So yeah.

most cds here and around the high $20's to low $30's so 20 is cheap
