I honestly think “theatre” just sounds much more theatrical.

Plus, I always associate “theater” with the place and “theatre” with the art. Thought this is probably just weird foreigner-thinking.

Sadly, this is true. I would "Like" it if there were a button. I prefer "re" myself but agree that Americans will be baffled. I myself am baffled as to why theatre/er is evil anyway?!? :o

I'm American, & I picked 'theatre' because I've always spelled it that way. I'm not sure where I picked up the habit.
Sorry, Amanda. I feel bad asking you to change the title after you've already picked and released it.

I just like the way "Theatre" looks better. Perhaps that's because I grew up with it that way, but it's definitely my preference.

Post by: Loriant on June 01, 2012, 10:41:35 AM
I must confess that, as a French, I'm still quite puzzled to see "Theatre" being spelled like that. Seems like a trap, so that we are tricked into pronouncing it like we do in french. And then, the teacher can yell at us for being ignorant fools *paranoid*
Therefore, I voted for "Theater". I mean, it's how it sounds like in english.
Title: Re: AMANDA PALMER & THE GRAND THEFT ORCHESTRA PRESENT…
Post by: thereal_attentive on June 01, 2012, 10:41:52 AM
I'm torn on this one. Theatre is more pretentious and thus more ironic in context, but I also usually associate theatre with real performance art and theater with both art and farce (ala "security theater) so I voted for theater. Perhaps the most ironic answer would be "Theat[re|er] is evil" as an even higher level of the sort "say-anything-to-get-elected theater".

I dunno, movie theaters can be pretty evil... very dark, other people's backs/heads/feet invading your personal space, floors covered with suspicious gooey substances, and then suddenly, LOUD NOISES!

ETA: Despite my attempts to reason this out for myself, I still voted "theatre." :icon_brilsmurf:

I agree with you.  I picked "theatre" but being American I always spell it "theater" because I don't want to confuse people...

Also, one is considered evil over the other? That's news to me.

Give the Americans some credit...most of us can figure out the difference between theater/theatre, favorite/favourite, and color/colour without getting baffled. For me, it's always been theatre. And no...I don't think it's pretentious.

theater - for movies and popcorn
theatre - for fur coats, kiminos, and drama

I am an American, but I don't think you can have the Grand Theft Orchestra go to the theater.  They go to the theatre.  Maybe if it was the "Guitar Hero Rock Band".

and the album title should be LIVE THEATRE EVIL

You see Shakespeare in a theatre. You see Die Hard in a theater.

Registered to say this:  Theater is screen, Theatre is stage; thus my teacher told me.  There are comments here that imply stage is better art than screen.  I disagree.

That said, I didn't vote on the album title.  Either would work.

I'm afraid I do not yet understand the “nine layers of irony”. Sure, Amanda and her band do theatre, so it's contradictory for them to say that. The very act of saying something so treacherous and outrageous is theatre too, I assume. What else?

It might make sense in context and with time, I suppose. I don't think it's a bad one.

this is a really poor choice of a "first and only" of amanda's decisions to be upset about.

even i barely give a fuck and i always have something hateful to say.

I think it should have just been a self-titled album. Just Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra would have been good.
i'd been so excited the past month with how the whole kickstarter thing was going, that i forgot all about the album needing a title. i just can't wait to hold it in my hands, and honestly when amanda tweeted that she was about to reveal the title i thought to myself "oh yeah, that's what we didn't know already, cool..."
i agree though that at that point the title is the last thing i'm thinking about
Title: Re: AMANDA PALMER & THE GRAND THEFT ORCHESTRA PRESENT…

And I don't like the title at all, but who really cares?
I think it should have just been a self-titled album. Just Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra would have been good.

Self-titled would have been preferable.
But whatever. All I care about is the music and the goodies that come with it. A few words don't make a difference.

I guess I'm only disappointed after she tweeted about having the world's greatest/funniest album title, or something to that effect. I'm missing the "nine layers of irony" too, cos all I get is that her and the band "do" theatre, but... idk. It just seems odd. Yes, Virginia and Who Killed Amanda Palmer? both have a ring to them. Theater/re Is Evil sounds... less? I don't know. Maybe it'll grow on me. It probably will.

the title isn't ruining my life...it's just a disappointment, a let down

there is no ring to it, no pzaz. idk

the title doesn't matter when compared to the music though

I hope the album cover will redeem the title for me :)

EDIT: I think why I'm so mad is that IMO, an album title should set the tone for the music, or be the main theme of an album. for just one example, Born This Way. it's Cathy and sets the tone and theme forthe album.

Theatre Is Evil....what? every single song we know so far, IMO doesn't relate to that title. it makes no sense in regards to the thematic nature of the music
Title: Re: AMANDA PALMER & THE GRAND THEFT ORCHESTRA PRESENT…
Post by: Félix Marqués on June 02, 2012, 09:16:42 AM
^ The artwork of the album probably serves as a bridge. All those pictures of the band among luxury furniture and gold records. It serves as a bridge to the kind of music by employing a rock band aesthetic that fits with the synth-ness, and at the same time its exaggerated and theatrical nature, combined with the whole tabloid-ish “oh were just a famous rock band swimming in gold” makes the title sound even more hypocritical.

I was going to write that they should use the Australian spelling, since that is where the album was recorded, but I see that the point is moot!

Now I'd just like an explanation. The only thing I can figure is that theatre is an illusion and Buddhism teaches that all we experience is illusion and that we should clear our minds (wait, mind is an illusion!) to reach Zen. Or something like that. Anybody who practices Buddhism wanna help me out here? But if everything we experience is an illusion, then there is no difference between theater and daily life. No line between "reality" and "imagination". And as I write this, my kids are being pirates in the other room.

The theatre, Buddhism & Illusion idea is pretty interesting. I’d quite like to believe that that could be the meaning behind the album title…

I’m not a Buddhist but I think that the reduction of reality-to-illusion can be understood in the context of the four noble truths. The general pitch of the four noble truths is that suffering is very bad and that a lot of it (possibly all of it) is down to psychological attachments we’ve formed; these attachments are maladaptive as stand-alone beliefs but have become weight bearing beliefs which sort of serve as a convoluted means to an end. The illusion, in this predicament, is that we believe that these means and ends are useful when all we really require is a cessation of the underlying tensions that spur us to act. The drama (theatre) of life merely serves as a crude means for acting out and resolving tensions and it serves that purpose in such a way as to create new tensions that need resolving and which might even be irresolvable with that clumsy approach. The Buddhist essentially aims for a more direct and efficient way to resolve these tensions.

It’s possible to take this idea to Reductio ad absurdum when thinking about what this reduction of psychology might mean but I don’t think it really deserves it. The intended outcome of the meditative practice doesn’t contradict or encroach on the “suffering is bad” premise which is basically what grounds that aspect of the philosophy in reality and makes it relevant. The premise is essentially an absolute – suffering (slowly resolving or non-resolving strains both mental and physical), as an experience in itself, would be bad for anything in any conceivable universe and it is better for these tensions to not exist or to resolve as efficiently as possible if one does not wish to suffer.

Thank you for your thoughtful, illuminating response. I don't wish to be irreverent. I think the premise "suffering is bad" is a a good simple translation/reduction of the album title. Amanda has said that many of the songs are about losing things, which could relate to attachment.

Maybe like the Tristan Allen EP? That was also DVD shaped, and it worked. It might just end up being cropped to have Amanda's face in the middle of it?

I have no idea. We'll just have to wait and see.

Any ideas on what the bottom right silver thing is? Or is that just something unrelated that slipped into the picture?
