Title: GUIDE: will there be a signing ? (aka meet-n-greet)

Edit 4 May 2019 - both GUIDES need minor updating.
Please PM me or post suggestions for improvements on this post.

seems every few months, one of us writes these words,
so now we can just bump this thread, link to it, and improve it over time

No Intermission Tour

General
always, Always, ALWAYS assume there will be a signing
a+b both love doing signings
i have seen them both do them for over an hour,
after doing a full set, and both ill with the flu.
seems to energize them

there are very rare occasions,
when travel schedules don't allow a signing
ask around, if in doubt

"formal" signings?
signings are sometimes announced from the stage
and sometimes, the venue's bouncers (aka security) just line up people
and kick everyone else out.
(bouncers are people, have a hard job,
and there is usually some employee who is waiting to sweep and mop the floor,
so give them a little understanding)
sometime, just what is allowed for a signing is part of the contract.

advice?
stay near the stage door
(the door between the hall, where you all heard the concert and the stage)
tell the bouncers you have sometime you want a +/or b to sign
(if they don't see any merch,
 just show them your belly)

if it's your first time, and probably your only time,
and no signing, and they kick you out
see the P.S. @ the end
the rest of you can skip the P.S.
(Beth sezs something relevant & compassionate ; - )

if it's a solo show,
and the other comes,
the other often hang out near the merch table,
or @ a corner table
or @ the end of the bar ...
just have a good look around!

LAST PIECE OF ADVICE
come before doors,
and enter @ doors
both a+b occasionally come outside the venue and walk the line
(though i have yet to hear them hum any johnny cash while doing so)
both a+b occasionally come out into the hall and mingle before the opener
and the rest of the fans are beyond cool to hang out with.
thanks len

this is basically the total run-down. len is a wise man.

i always try to sign after every show but there are definitely situations where it is impossible.
sometimes the bus has to drive asafp after the show to get to the next one.

sometimes we really have to improvise...for instance, i'll play a club where there's a dance party directly after the show and they will
not only want us the fuck out of the venue but there will be awful lighting and terrible OONCE OONCE OONCE eurotrash music.
but usually i'm like fuck it let's just sign in the corner and deal. so if you're one of those lucky folks on that night, know that i did not choose the music.
in brighton, we signed in the freezing rain because the venue fucking kicked us out. but people brought blankets. and cake. so it was ok.

i will almost always sign something if you're waiting outside the venue when i leave.
if i don't, it's because i'm really tired, or sick, but this has only happened a few times in my life.

P.S. if you're not a first timer, and probably only timer,
just go on to the next thread

if you're not a first timer, and probably only timer,
just go home if there is no signing

ok, you're a first timer, and probably an only timer:
i know some of you travel hundreds, and sometimes thousands of miles,
and a few of you may only be able to catch a +/or b once,
the rest of us, be considerate of a+b, their team, and the venue

look for the stage door at the back of the venue
(not all venues have back doors ; - },
in which case wait by the front door)
and/or the tour bus
Please remember that the touring party LIVES on the tour bus.  It is our home.  Please in those circumstances be polite and brief, because everyone is very, very tired at that point.

I understand if you've come a very long way that you REALLY want to meet the band, but please always try to respect the human-ness of Amanda and Brian and the crew.

Getting between a tired merch girl and her tour bus can be a very dangerous choice.

Please PM me or post suggestions for improvements on this post.

let me say this even clearer,
if you have meet a + b before,
leave the tour bus along
and don't stalk the venue after the show

Getting between a tired merch girl and her tour bus can be a very dangerous choice.  ;)

they know zillions of ways to bound and gag you with merch
and leave you in the nearest dumpster

who would want a fate like that?

Len, i think the P.S bit added shouldn't have the first not in bold and should be if you are a first timer. Other than that, amazing post.

Thank you to Len for the write up, and to Amanda and Beth for there helpful points as well, but now I have a question. I understand completely that there will most likely be lots(hundreds?) of fans hoping to meet/have something signed, myself being one of them. Not to sound too terribly selfish, but is there any way to assure someone gets the chance to do so?

I am currently working on some tattoo pieces, some of you may have seen my finger tattoo's on twitter(Amanda actually mentioned me!!! I was soo happy to see that!!). Anyway, the fingers are just a start to what the full design is that I have in mind. Thing is, in my head I have this planned out with Brian's signature on top of my right hand, and Amanda's on my left, so I really want to try to assure that I can get this done at the Chicago show, but I'm really concerned about getting lost in the crowd and not getting the chance. Any suggestions other than what has already been mentioned?

seriously....if there be a signing Amanda and Brian will pay attention to each and every one of you in whatever unique way you present yourselves! the tattoos may possibly justify a "Hot" and a hug!

I know both Amanda and Brian want to sign, but with the size of these venues it can be very difficult.  I suspect there will be relatively few signings on this tour.  As a solo artist Amanda had the luxury of playing to relatively small audiences (usually 400 people or less) so meet and greets were much more manageable.  I do hope that the band will be able to meet some of you on tour, but I wanted to let you know that it might not happen so that if it doesn't you're not blindsided in the moment.

I understand this, but I wrote Brian and Amanda a letter and I really want to get it to them.
If I give it to one of the merch people, do you think it will end up in their hands?
I'm going to the Kentucky show, if that helps.

For most of the shows, the best person to give things like that to is the merch girl Casey when she isn't busy. In Lexington, though, Amanda's assistant Superkate will be there, so you can give it to her. she's six feet tall and has long black dreadlocks--- you can't miss her.

Amanda said they were doing the signing in Lexington because they had never played there before.

They didn't do a signing in St. Louis last night though. Although, I did talk to Brian some after the show by the tour bus.

I kinda got the feeling they were planning a second encore (house-lights stayed off when they left the stage.... Amanda came out a minute later with a couple of announcements) but when they finished encore#1, half the audience bolted for the doors..... So they probably had an unexpected 5-10 minutes to kill....

Yeah I was kinda thinkin that too. Then standing in the lobby security said they would not be doing a signing and I was crushed, but decided to hang out outside for a bit and did happen to catch both of them outside. Amanda recognized my finger tattoo's and said "It's you!!!" as she grabbed me and gave me a kiss. I was in heaven. The she signed my hand and I got Brian to sign the other one, and they were both tattoo'd on by the end of the night.

I was excited in hopes of getting something signed after the show as well.  I waited in that long ass merch line for what seemed like 30 minutes and was hoping that Amanda and Brian would magically appear at the table and sign things.  I bought my $80 in merch and waded into the only direction possible, out of the venue.  I was crushed, thinking that I had no chance at getting an autograph.  Outside the venue I overheard someone say "Hey, look at those hardcore fans waiting by the alley, heh" so I proceeded to join the alley group to chat and wait it out :P

it has been really helpful reading this topic, and thank you to all who contributed to it. i wanted to ask again though in fear of things being different now that Amanda is touring different venues with the GTO. i've never seen her live (even though i had planned to two times in the past - fingers crossed this will be the lucky time!) and i was wondering if it'd be better to wait outside the venue really early when she probably will be arriving for her soundcheck. this is the way i've met many of my idols in the past. anyone knows how many hours before the show does amanda do her soundcheck? i wouldn't want to monopolise her time just a picture would do for me.

maybe someone can post their experiences here after the european tour begins in october. looking forward to any feedback though

btw, i'm travelling from greece to austria for the Nov 5th show.

Also very interested in anybody's experiences. I am penny-pinching so I can take girlfriend to the Toronto show as an anniversary present. Hundreds of miles and dollars will be travelled and spent (though Greece-to-Austria person before me has a better story). The show itself will be awesome, but getting to her meet Amanda and the band would be a stunning experience.

I've been to 3 GTO shows (two in the Europe tour last year, and the London show in June), and managed to meet her and the band every time, but not always organised. The UK shows last August/September (apart from London, due to the venue), she did organised meet and greets. She didn't come out in London but we managed to quickly say hi and be hugged and kissed by the tourbus before she left. The show in June this year, the venue told everyone to leave pretty much straight away, so we did, but about 10 minutes later Amanda jut popped out the front, spent about 20-30 minutes with the 15-20 people that were around, and then proceeded to party on the rooftop.

I guess it's mostly down to the venue and whether they're strict with kicking people out or not.

As for soundcheck, last year's London show she turned up about 2pm-ish? but this year it was probably about 4 or 5 I think. However, she had been doing press all day, and the soundcheck ended up running over, cos she was late. But whether she stays to chat when she turns up will depend on how much time she has, and also how many people are around.

I guess my best advice is to just go for it. Turn up early. If you get to meet Amanda and the band, then great. If you don't, then at least you'll be at the front of the queue and have an awesome spot :3 and then hang around afterwards - if she doesn't have time to stay, then c'est la vie, but you'll never know unless you try ;)

Hope this is helpful in some way!

i need 2 merge this in. -len

for Amanda this asymmetry is not exhausting, but invigorating.

Amanda has no fans.  just many friends.

contact with her is a gift she cherishes.
making it more from yourself is icing on that gift.
though she appreciates that icing.
Amanda much prefer the gift of yourself to anything physical.
she often tours with minimal luggage & doesn't have space for added stuff.

talking substantially about music, especially clueing her into a new group she hasn't heard of is appreciated.  one of her best friends started this way.

as is discussing how to mother.  e.g. how it's different in your state or country.
