Hi Everyone...
I had the final photos taken of my new painting "happiness is just a gash away/ Bad Habit #1."  MUCH better quality than the first photo.  Hope everyone had a nice weekend !!  Love, Hayley(http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/sisterdesire/Bad-Habit-1-WEB.jpg)

hayley:

exquisite

the second photo here on the box,
has a different kind of detail,
because the light +/or camera settings are different.
in the first (http://www.theshadowbox.net/forum/index.php?topic=696.0), the brush strokes were much more visible.
and the roughness and broadness of the
strokes in the black background
adds a lot of tension to the painting.

framing the black is wood with blood streaking down.

the arm seems alive,
especially the hand and the fingernails,
yet it's visibly torn at the bottom
(unless that's an artifact of the collage?)
yet why is it seen against such rough blackness?

the blood left on the scissors is so minimal,
and the gashes almost superficial,
so much less blood then behind the black field.
is that lightness part of the happiness of self-gashing?

the scissors are not lifelike, much more a symbol

so, is this scene
real?  surreal?  allegory?

like your other paintings,
i'll be looking back at it from time to time

thank you -len

ps:

1) my questions are rhetorical.
i don't expect answers from you.
though other boxers are welcome to take them on

2) you might want to edit your
start post on this thread to also
include the first photo on the box.
looking at both added to my appreciation of the painting

3) as with all photos/scans of art on the net
(especially here on the box),
i so wish i could see the original.
the reproductions only capture so much.
perhaps on the walls of the BMA some day

4) i hope Amanda Palmer sees it soon.
'cause i know you like her to.   ; - }

Thanks, just the same...... if I'm lucky enough to see you in Boston on that Sunday, we can continue our critique !!!  It is SO HARD to find someone who can "talk art."

someone who can "talk art."

for me, talking about art is just
describing what i perceive,
and the feelings it causes

the more i have looked/heard/sensed
the easier it has become

that is, practice helps ...

more shameless tryin' then anything else

Firstly, thankyou to Len for posting a link to the other painting, it makes it alot easier to compare the two.

And now,Thankyou Hayley for posting this. Your art never ceases to inspire me.

On the second photograph, there is a darkness round where the arm has been torn. I really like that, it almost looks like the arm has been burnt.
The redness in the cuts is a deeper shade, also which sort of makes them look like fresh cuts,on the other photograph the cuts were more pinker, making it look like they were starting to heal.

The scissors are less visible, which makes some details hard to see.

Again,I thank you.

(I'm so sorry it's such a bad review,I'm not very good with artistic terms or giving constructive criticism. It seems like I am just echoing what Len has said,I'm so sorry.)

a good review.

you saw things that none of the rest of us noticed.
which adds to what we see, the next time we look
at both this work of hayley's and other art.

might have been interesting,
though a bit challenging technically,
to have used a real scissors in this art

i like the strong choice of an amputated arm as metaphor for distancing from emotional pain. the numbness of being cut-off from ones interior, but only temporally. the scissors seem to evoke finding a way back to the source of the pain. scratching the surface and finally just cutting through the denial; blood as honesty.
