Title: Your Vinyl Albums. (stories, pics and shits...)
Post by: the CAPS guy on July 17, 2007, 02:57:34 AM
So, my friend just gave me an old vinyl player, (i dunno how it's named in english), wow.... it's just amazing.

The frist thing i've played is the "Oh perilous world" by rasputina... track 11.. "infidel".

stunning.

i love the old style of this "thing",  and i can spend hours seeing the vinyl turing around.

oh.. the small details of life... the more enjoyable things.

Turntable!

I have my Dad's old one from the early 70's... it's brilliant. I just bought Belle and Seb's Tigermilk on vinyl...

Glad you're enjoying your return to quite possible nostalgia and enjoyment of spinning vinyl... It's a wonderful thing.

I love my record player, and refuse to give vinyl up. If I have my way, all of my music will be released on vinyl eventually.

wannabe-dolly... did you sig my first post?  :glasses1:

I listened to a load of LP-transfers of modern classical avantgarde music (lots of silent stuff), and... it doesn't sound better at all. Sometimes you have to search for the music among the surface noises. And whenever the mixes I listen through have a CD-track thrown in, sensing the actually music immediately is so much more comfortable - since your brain is not occupied with filtering out all the playing noises.

I have a ton of LPs (basically free jazz), but never listen to them. I started to transfer the best ones to CDR.
The rock-segment of my vinyl-collection meanwhile has large parts dublicated as CD. That's how fond I am of playing LPs.

I cant really talk in a general perspective becuase like i said, the one I had was shit, and I only had that one experience. and from that oen time i was really amazed, because the sound was so much alive and intense.

Nice, I didn't know Raspy did that release in vinyl.  They seem like a good fit for that and I'm impressed with the new record.  Most of my vinyl is miami booty bass (2 Live Crew, Disco Rick) and it shakes the floor at high volumes causing skipping  :sad7:

I love you for liking Rasputina.

I have The gatherings' Souvineers and Home on Vinyl. I got the last version of Home CLEAR vinyl from their tour. The sound is amazing on a record player.

Can someone give me some sites to buy vinyl records off of if there are any out there. I keep hearing of bands I like releasing them, but I can never find any copies.

I just listened to "LIFTED or the Story is in the Soil..." by Bright Eyes on my record player this morning.

I also have a shitload of original pressings, including "Sgt. Pepper", "Highway 61 Revisited", "Pet Sounds", etc etc etc.

Yeah, I know I'm awesome. Tell me something I DON'T know.

Here's my rig.

(Note the 6" vinyl. I've got several 5" records too! Crom bless Melt-Banana.)

I'm a bit of a vinyl junkie. Digital's more convenient and all but there's something about vinyl that's much more special. Much better visuals (art + colored vinyl), better sound in some cases, and a certain ritualistic feeling to it all. Gimme more vinyl!

IT'S FROM EUROPE BUT THEY HAVE A GREAT VINYL COLLECTION.

YOU CAN TRUST IN THAT SITE, THEY SENT ME A BUTTON AND SOME STICKERS EXTRA.

.

THIS IS ANOTHER SITE WHERE I FOUND REGINA'S "SOVIET KITSCH" IN VINYL. ($15.98)

There are a million sites online that sell vinyl. Just poke around, doing things like punching in an album name on Google and including "vinyl" or "LP". GEMM (http://www.gemm.com) is also a wonderful site.

Ditto...for my Tori Amos vinyls. I found Under the Pink and a double vinyl of Boys for Pele. Sure I know all the songs, but it would be cool to actually put them in motion. Then I would have an even more valid excuse for buying more vinyl. Now not having a player is my valid excuse for not spending money. Still you can't deny the retro quality of awsome that a vinyls are!

First record player I had had 4 speeds!

16
33
45
78 rpm...

Pretty ancient.

I have spent the best part of half a life-time replacing all my vinyl with CD. Just a few left to source. I am not going backwards again.

two notes, at least from my experiences:
1) if you buy a portable record player, the speakers are built in and it's, well, portable. that would eliminate the need for buying extra speakers, though your audio quality would obviously not be amazing. but many portable record players, or at least new ones, have outputs as well in case you DO decide to hook up speakers.
2) be careful buying on ebay. i bought a record player said to be in perfect condition, and guess what - it wasn't. it was 'slow', meaning everything was distorted and dull-sounding, to the point of it being unlistenable and unusable. i tried to send it back, and the guy who sold it to me still hasn't contacted me about my refund, despite me having sent the package back.

my two cents. ;)

How did you pay? My mother won a computer for me on eBay, and the seller never delivered. My mother filed a complaint, and the seller had the audacity to ask her to drop it if he gave the computer a free upgrade. She didn't, and he still never delivered, but at least she recovered most of her money.

I heart vinyl too, unfortunately my receiver is broken so I can't listen to anything until I get a new one.

Hopefully soon coz I got this gem on the way

I don't really trust the whole ebay thing... I've had some back experiences with buying stuff online... but maybe I should just get over that. And it doesn't have to be portable, having to hook it up to speakers is fine, I have some nice ones at home... so no problem. thanks.

Recent soon-to-arrive acquisitions.

The Legendary Pink Dots - Alchemical Playschool 2x10". (An excursion to opium dens in South Asia. A weird album, even by LPD standards! It's good, though.)
Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero 2xLP. ($40!!! Granted, the package will be bad-ass, but I'm halfway to e-mailing Trent and demanding it be signed.)

I don't think Vinyl is better or worse.

You have to keep in mind that not all pressings are good. Most records after 1985 were plastic, not vinyl(and there is a huge difference).

A record that is well cared for and played on a good player that has a fresh needle should reveal almost no surface noise. You must also keep the surface clean and static clean. Sure it is a lot of work, but it does make you value music more.

An mp3 is disposable and worth nothing to the "owner". A CD can be treasured, but with the tiny artwork and stupid jewel case, it can't compare to the value of a good record with bad-ass artwork.

Yet CDs hold their tone until they die. Records wear down faster. That is why people used to tape their records, and listen to the tapes instead. They could keep their vinyl fresh. When the tape breaks or wears out, you just record it again. Now you can burn them to CDs. Even better.

I still listen to tapes, records and i even still have a Laser Disc video player. Yet I love my cds as well.

so... I finally bought a kickass record player (it's red, and shiny, and I love it) and bought a bunch (well, 7) of old records at a second hand store (1€/piece, whoo) and now I'm listening to them in my room, together with my mom, cause it's the music she listened to when she was young.

EDIT: does anyone know any good ways of cleaning vinyl? I used one of those cloths for glasses, but that just moves the dust to another part of the disc. (and these things are VERY dusty)

We were too far ahead of the curve.  People didn't realize how cool vinyl was again yet.

I started collecting vinyl in 2017, because I couldn't find a digital copy of Tribe 8's "Pig Bitch" EP.

Just last week I was browsing in a used record store and found a limited pressing of Child Birth's album "Women's Rights" on bright yellow vinyl. I also found Belly's "King" which was funny because earlier that day I had pre-ordered their upcoming album "Dove"

I currently have 3 vinyls at home and only half of one of them is mine. I really want to buy a vinyl but I feel this weird pressure - I feel like it has to be some really great album, I cannot buy some random thing I like. I don't know why but I see buying a vinyl as a huge commitment.

do you own a record player?

i.e. a bit of a commitment in $$$ & space to be able to play vinyl.

Last week I spent too much money on a limited edition pressing of X-Ray Spex 'Germfree Adolescent', on yellow vinyl marbled with blue and green. I love this album so much
