Title: The Complain/Marvel/Bitch/Gush About Your Job Thread
Post by: The King of Carrot Flowers on July 20, 2009, 09:16:13 PM
What do people on the 'Box do for jobs? Good and bad things to say are all welcome.

As for me, I'm still searching. Unemployment sucks.

Security Officer but looking to possibly change, hopefully for the better, or at least a 2nd part time job to finally build up some savings.

YOU ARE!? Wow. What's your forte? Can you make pasta from scratch?

I am currently jobless because the City of Toronto fucked me over and about a couple thousand of other students across the GTA. If the strike did not exist, or ended a few weeks ago, I would be a rides attendant at a children's amusement park called Centreville. It's on an island that's a 30-minute ferry ride from the harbor. But at least I get free entrance into all museums and the CN Tower, right? Sooner or later the need for money will begin to consume me and I'll cave in and start working, again, at a call centre (the people that harass you to do interviews).

Currently I am unemployed but I'm looking into volunteering at the hospital and I might get a job in a fish and chip shop depending on whether I give a damn and I'm about to start selling paintings. Oh, I am student? Sometimes that feels like a job.

I work in an office for a finance company, and today, my foot stool broke. So now I'm all lost and distressed at work because I don't know what to do with my feet!
So today I hate my job

I was unemployed until last Friday haha. I started a job behind the bar at an Asian restaurant. They have such nice food, I am the only non-Asian working there, but they're all really lovely. The good pay makes up for the lack of hours. The work is generally easy enough, drinks and desserts. Did I mention I get free food every night I work there? Possibly the best thing about working there.

Similarly, I work in an office for commercial lending people. I don't like it, but not because my footstool broke. They didn't even give us footstools!

I can do everything except penne. Penne is kinda hard to do fresh. TBH though, the only ones I actually make fresh are ravioli and tagliatelle.

Tomorrow or Thursday afternoon, I'm going into town to apply at a couple places:

1: The local bagel shop, which is a less-than-five-minute walk from my house.
2: Lou's, a lovely little restaurant in the nearby college town.
3: The Dirt Cowboy, a small café in the same town.
4: The Dartmouth Bookstore - self-explanatory.
5: The Gap, which is close by, plus I'd be getting paid to act like a stereotypical homo and tell people how to dress. Easy money. PLUS Ben works there! YAY!
6: Lui Lui, a nearby Italian restaurant.
7: Three Tomatoes, an even closer Italian restaurant.
8: Salt Hill, a nearby pub.
9: The Nugget, a movie theatre in the nearby college town.

10 days to fix all the critical violations or it's going to be shut down and all the employees fired.

this is like...some kind of overwhelming victory for me.
i love it.

I fuckin' love Sonic. I know it's probably just as terrible as all fast food, but I love it still.

Especially since I only get it when I go down South, which I haven't done in YEARS.

My cousin used to work there, she loved it. And according to her, once they know you're a homo you're automatically hired.

Places I want to work:

The Library
A book store
Lush
Urban Outfitters (so that I can be a role model and tell everyone, 'You don't have to be anorexic to wear these clothes', and I'll help people with any questions they have, and be the friendliest stranger there....because I'm not evil but I know how to sell).

Your cousin's gay too?

Anyway, apparently if you work there you get everything sold there and at Banana Republic half-off. While most of it I wouldn't be caught dead wearing, there is probably some stuff I'd find quite dapper. And at half price. Awesome.

my only job was a mother tongue french teacher at highschool, for like, 3 months.
i had students from 13 to 19 (and i'm 20). it was pretty fun. i made them do all sort of creative stuff, games, writing stories and poetries, listening to music. strangely enough they liked me i thought it'd be awkward as hell and they would all make fun of me, but no!
so , it was cool.

I have the best job ever xD

I work as relief staff at the library for £6.30 an hour, and rarely have to do more than serve people on the counter and put books back on the shelves. Everyone I work with is delightful, and all the people who come in are lovely or at least amusing.

I've also started working at the local visitor's centre - it was my first day today, but it was RAD.

No job.  Kickass unpaid internship with a theater group called Cabaret Vagabond here in Chicago...totally punk cabaret.  I'm helping them with their residency at the University of Chicago, choosing furniture for the set and planning for future work.  Basically, a dream come true.  Now, if only I were getting paid.

Funny thing...  There's no law that says your job has to suck, or that you have to hate it.

I have a friend who drove a garbage truck for years...  didn't have a terribly high opinion of
most of his co-workers, but he loved the job.

i occasionally sell ice cream for my dad.. when i need money or he needs someone to stand in the ice cream car..
the hours are good (5 hours/day, 1 pm to 6pm), the pay is fairly okay, but it is hard work and customers are a bitch, really doesn't anyone know how to place orders?
also, standing up for 5 hours in a 40x50 cm space is hell, really not easy on your back.
and at the end of a summer day you usually go home with blisters on your hand. no fun.
i usually spend rest of the day lying on the couch or my bed when i get back, because my back is killing me by then..

i have to work tomorrow and the day after, whoopti, not really looking forward to it.

i also babysit, babysitting is nice. okay: pay is very sucky, but at least you don't really have to do anything. and i babysit for rich people, so around festive holidays like christmas or just when they are in a good mood, they pay more. they also pay more when they make me come in in the morning or when they feel bad for making me come for just 1 and a half hour. they once paid me 20 euro for 1 and a half hour.

I work in a small grocery-type store that only sells frozen food, in bulk. The pay is good - $16.58/hour - but it sucks that I work by myself for the vast majority of the time... it gets lonely.

Right now it's pissing me off though, because for the past 3 years I've worked there while also going to uni, I've worked every saturday by myself except for maybe 3 or 4 when I've gone on holiday. Saturdays suck... we have so many customers and I'm run off my feet. Last month I told my boss I wanted to work tuesdays instead of saturdays because my uni timetable would fit around it, so he said he'd hire someone to work saturdays. Now I'm stuck working tuesdays AND saturdays because he's so damn picky that he hasn't found a "suitable" person to hire yet. Argh.

Bouncers at the club that I work are really nice. We have good banter and things and like to get stoned together.
Today, during my shift, they put some form of legal high into my coffee. I got half way through it before they let on.
I am still buzzing. Don't really even know what it was.
Can't tell if I'm pissed off or amused...

They made up for it by giving me cake.
Now I've been up for 20 hours and can't sleep. Hmm.

We just had a small hourish long lock-in with beer and weed and things. It ended up in conversations about fisting and 3 of us, as a team, getting to level 100 on this iphone game where you move wooden blocks. Was pretty good.

Srsly, come work for me!! I'll give you room and board and sexytymez in return for you walking the dogs when I should and going to the shop for Twixes and cans of Pepsi Raw. Ooh, you can change the DVDs when I'm in bed as well. And I'll give you some spending money, of course. You'll be like a kept woman.

ahhh best job ever srsly. but do you want to come here, cos i has uni? we can share my room!

You live in Ireland, do you not? Cos I might be going uni in Belfast anyway. It's the only one I'm applying to with an offer lower than AAB, so if I screw up in my A Levels I might be seeing a whole lot more of you xD

i live in Scotland now!! And, Belfast is really close to my home town omg waaaah

No way! One of my other choices is Edinburgh, so I can STILL come see you xD

Sweetie.

I'm Northern, a girl, poor, I'm not nearly as clever as I like to think I am and there is a distinct possibility that I'll come right out of uni and right into a cardboard box under a railway bridge. Not great Oxbridge material, tbh.

I'm Northern, a girl, poor, and I'm so bloody much more clever than the people who run Ox/Cam, and they're intimidated by all that, so there is a distinct possibility that I'll come right out of uni and right into a cardboard box under a railway bridge. Too great to be Oxbridge material, tbh.

Good luck nevertheless...

Thank you. But I'm not that bright. And although it'd be nice if Sheeny was right and it WAS all about self-belief and whatever, there's still an unfathomable amount of prejudice within the system, whether it's conscious or not. Also, these private school kids get fucking COACHED through the admissions process, they've been practising interviews and whatever for years and the teachers have the time (not to mention the lovely foldable motivation) to make sure they do all the like reading around the subject and know more than just the course requirements. My teachers don't even have enough time to give us the full 5 hrs a week we're meant to. Fucking hate private education, it's not fucking fair.

Also, your swearing in English is not so good - a native would prefer "I'm so much more bloody clever" to "I'm so bloody much more clever ".

Ah, so...  I was attempting to modify "so much" rather than "clever", hence my inappropriate placement of the intensifier.
I don't swear much in American either, so I guess I just need more damn practice practise.

As for you, Mr Bizzell, I don't think "bloody" can be applied like that. I'm trying to think. The phrasing would have to be totally different for it to emphasise how much cleverer than them you were - it'd be more "I'm much bloody cleverer than them".

Trust me...it may not be so often.  *laughs*  But when I move, I'll probably still be workin' it at the big O-Dizzle, so if I'm in Atlanta and somebody is playing...yeah.  Then again, I won't probably move to Atlanta for...a while.  Poopiecakes.

I refer to back to my final point:

JUST BECAUSE I WORK THERE, DOESN'T MEAN I CARE!!

I'd have to care enough about cycle paths to read a leaflet about it, and I'm hardly gonna do THAT when I have important reading to do! Admittedly, reading of Doctor Who books.... but still! IMPORTANT!

The past couple of days I've gotten to leave early (as the season is dying down so they don't need as many people in the kitchen). But I'm getting a raise, apparently, because i've taken more responsibilities on (such as making waffles, working the grill, making toast and doing prep work).

If only I didn't keep knicking myself with the knife when I'm trying to cut up oranges and kiwis, then it'd be pretty much perfect.

Earler today I had to explain to an elderly lady (who was very hard of hearing) the difference between docusate and loperamide, and why the product she wanted was docusate. It didn't help that some kid I had problems with in high school was two places behind her in line snickering at my predicament.

He got his. He had a prescription for valtrex. Ahh, the justice of working in a pharmacy.

My job is awesome/difficult/exhausting/rewarding! I work in an animal clinic and while I tend to alternate between loving my co-workers and hating them, the vets I work with inspire me daily. And the animals!! I may be really terrible at human relationships but i will love your animals with my whole heart! :)

Yes, it's shitty to have to euthanize and animal, but it's 99% related to health issues. The hardest part is wanting to help an animal in a way that the clients can't afford or don't want to do. It's extremely difficult to euthanize an 11 month old puppy because he comes from backyard breeders and has elbow/shoulder/hip/knee dysplasia all at once and is in alot of pain. It's even harder to see the owner not learn their lesson from it. :(

But it's so fucking awesome when you have an animal that is so fucking sick and you work your ass off to treat them and suddenly you see them fighting and see them turn around and see them go home.

It's an amazing feeling to hold a dog who is having difficulty waking up and warming up post surgery in your lap and comfort them and love them and warm 'em up.

It's been cool to rescue kittens and see them being born and growing up and you feel proud of the momma for being a great mother and proud of the kittens for being annoying little shits that kittens are so awesome at being.

I get amazed at seeing their little bodies fight and how loving cat/dogs are even when they feel like utter shit and are terrified but somehow know we're trying to help.

So yeah, I love my fucking job. :)

I could never be a teacher.
I am a part time French teacher (since I'm french mother tongue) at highschool... Some of my students are cool and nice and all, but most of them are just so uninterested, it's crazy.
I try and pick topics that can interest them, like social themes, politics, yet the just stare at me blankly instead of debating.
Today I had picked two texts (one pro and one con) about the role and influence of the Catholic Church in Italy. Nobody seemed to give a shit. I mean, in Italy the influence of the Church is huuuuuuge. Yet nobody saw it as a problem. BAAH I give up.

when i'm on girls, i like to be on the fitting rooms, which is basically just monitoring people coming in and out of them.

well i generally have a smile on my face. once, i was working at the door and greeting people, and i was thinking that sometimes mine is the only smile a person will see in a day. so i made sure it was a good one. also, i hoped that i could make one person smile, but i don't know if i did.

when i'm on girls, i like to be on the fitting rooms, which is basically just monitoring people coming in and out of them.
You're also the first person people see coming in the door.
 :) =good

 >:( =not good

Very important, much underappreciated responsibility.

well i generally have a smile on my face. once, i was working at the door and greeting people, and i was thinking that sometimes mine is the only smile a person will see in a day. so i made sure it was a good one. also, i hoped that i could make one person smile, but i don't know if i did.
If it interests you in the slightest, a number of studies have been done that pretty consistently
show that people spend a lot more money in stores where they feel "welcomed"...

Captain Obvious, you have a gorgeous smile. Im quite sure you make some people feel better when they see you smiling.  O0

And I was hired on march this year to replace a guy here, who has already left the company. I was supposed to be a programmer. But on the last few months most of my work has been connected to infrastructure: email server, web server, etc etc. When they were telling me what I they expected me to do here they did mention this part, however, they told there would be a person who was going to help me with these tasks.

By the end of October this person came here to instruct me with some aspects of the networks and servers. When he was about to update the server I told him not to do so, cause it could affect some parts of the system. He took the risk and blew the application server. I fixed after a week. With  NO SUPPORT FROM HIM OR THE OTHER GUY.

Now, Im trying to fix the e-mail server - which was what that guy tried to fix at first.  And Im not an employee, Im an intern (in fact, it is a little different, but there is no word for that in english). And not doing what I wanted and what I thought I was going to do here demotivate [?] me a lot.

Somebody pinch me. I can't believe I'm doing what I'm doing, working with who I'm working with and accomplishing goals and going places I could have never imagined I'd get to go.

And I seem to be really good at my job and that makes me feel really good on both a personal and professional level.

It's like a snug puzzle piece that fits just right.

My job has reverted to basically what it was this summer.  Same deal, sitting the desk, answering the phone, signing people in...but no one is here.  It's so much like working here in summer that it kind of wigs me out.

I'll admit, my job is fairly easy, but the bitchy thing about it is that I get home exhausted as all hell.

Which makes my attempts at writing and drawing all that much harder.

I just got off night shift at the hospital. It was my first day on the job there. It's pretty cool, better than the small retail pharmacy I was working for. There was one problem today, though. I misread a script, and compounded an etanercept injection wrong. Not only could I have injured someone, I cost the pharmacy somewhere around $750, because the medication had to be disposed of, and re-compounded.

I don't think I'm meant to be a RPh. I should just stick to being a technician.

You didn't kill anyone (or even get anyone sued from what I can tell)...

Give it a while.  (And explain to me why there isn't a law that says prescriptions must
be either computer-printed/typed, or at least written in neat block-print...)

yesterday was the slowest day i've ever had. it was really quiet for a saturday and as a result there was hardly anything for anyone to do, so we were all just standing around getting yelled at by the boss for not doing anything. when there was nothing to do.

today however, the "cool" manager was working. it was pretty cool, the music that was on came straight from his ipod so it was pretty good and he basically let us do nothing. i was even sitting down for a little while haha.

I work in the show store for New York Comic Con and Anime Fest.  I am one of the people that Reed Exhibitions (who run the show) have decided to fly out to Chicago in April to work on the inaugural Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2).
THEY BOUGHT THE PLANE TICKETS.  AND I THINK THEY BOOKED THE HOTEL ROOMS.  AFJA;FAHJAFLJALDF.

I'm ridiculously off-the-walls excited for this!

Just don't go - tap into your natural innocent charm when they ask where you were and be all like, "Oh my God! I'm so sorry - I thought I wasn't working this weekend!" Go into over-drive with the apologising, look all flustered and completely horrified that you left them in the lurch. Make your eyes all big and, if you can, Get Posh - do all your shalls and you-and-I's properly and change your accent to a southern English one. Works for me xD

I would just call day of and try to sound hoarse. Give them an "I'm really not feeling well. I don't think I can come to work." It's what I do. They don't need details about your sickness.

Or - FAMILY CRISIS!! They NEVER ask for details on a family crisis. Just mumble it when you phone the next day saying you're sorry. Try and sound traumatised. (This is a method I usually reserve for people who know me too well to be taken in by my previous tack xD)

i can't really do family crisis thing cos my family is in ireland, so it'd just be too awkward lol.
also, Anna, they're really strict about taking sick days, I'll need to fill in a form :-\
Anyway, I think it's going to have to be vomiting. Cos, it's icky, they don't want me to vomit all over the clothes and then I can be fine the next day, just look a little tired (which isn't going to be hard). AND if they see me in town, I can tell them I was feeling a little better so I went into town to get food/medicine. lollll

Mleh.  I realize this is the case, and that my long term health would be much improved if I did, but they're one of my few luxuries.  Anything I own that cost more than $25 has been either a gift, haggled down to a price of $25 or below, or (if it is from Wal Mart) stolen.  So I spend the highly limited amounts of money tossed into the coffee can at my feet when doing a capella versions of blues and rock songs on Things That Are Not Good For Me.  The normal job money goes to tuition and groceries.

Lost my job today. I have joined the ranks of the Army of Unemployed!

*sigh*

It'll be fine. I'm alive. I have some savings. I got some severance pay. I don't have to worry too much about paying for food. My job was really boring and not in any field of my interests, or even one of the fields next to my fields. It was across the countryside, not even visible.

I hear jobs are hard to come by these days.

I can confirm that last point, but if volume of actual help-wanted ads (as opposed to scammers
just trying to collect people's private info) is any indication, the situation is slowly improving.

Dude. Do you know ANYTHING about looking cool?? If you're willing to smoke because it's cool, you're more than happy to die at 27 for the same reason. You won't be alive long enough to end up on a respirator xD

Cee, That's slightly promising.

Things I'm considering:
- filing a claim for unemployment once I'm officially unemployed (I'm still on payroll until 2/17)
- asking if I can help out at one of the farmer's market stalls. I'm okay with them paying me in food, though my landlord won't let me pay the rent that way.
- going back to the headhunter that got me the job I just lost and asking them if they know of anything

Thanks, Indja. My library is having trouble keeping its doors open as is, but I could check there. I've considered selling a baby (surrogacy or egg donation), but it doesn't so much pay that well, and they have silly requirements about being married and having kids of your own as of the last time I checked. Something about you being less likely to renege on your agreement that this is not your child.

Mmm, if I were you - and bare in mind that I approach all such hypothetical situations with a child-like joy and innocence that factors in only the lovely sides of life that I've seen on TV and none of the actual realistic horribleness - I would take this as an opportunity to go do something you always wanted to like.... well, I'd build a self-sustaining eco-hut in the country and live there with a crowd of red-headed, long-legged women and ginger-beardy ginger-beery men. But please feel free to insert your own version of bliss into that slot.

Headhunters are most definitely your friends, especially if they already know you.

Farmer's market is also good, 'cuz 1) boredom is a bite and 2) it shows "work ethic"
(I don't know if you're likely to make any "useful" contacts in the farmer's market, but ya might...

Unemployment benefits are there for a reason.  I assume you have bills and such; don't wait
'til they're overdue.

Indja, can you find me one of those long-legged ginger-haired girls?

No they're mine.

Actually, you can have Florence Welch when I'm finished with her because apparently she's a bitch. I'm sure she'd be nice to you though.

Hmmm.... She seems not at all unattractive (I had no idea there was actually a "Florence"
in Florence & The Machine...  There's no real Elizabeth in Elizabeth & the Catapult, is there?)

Does she already have the eco-hut?

I don't think she's the eco-hut type, tbh. One of the other reasons she's only a temporary part of my plan.

Had my shifts cut back from five to two a week.  Great.  Just when I'm moving out and have to start paying rent!  I'm going to have to get a second job, but there's not much around at the moment.

Oh yeh, and even though all us casuals at work are hardly getting any shifts, the owners went and employed someone else.  She is their friend and they are doing her a favour, apparantly.  Still, it sucks for us because we certainly don't need any more staff and we will probably all get even less shifts now.  She has four shifts next week and all the other casual girls have two.  :(  They said it's cause she's new and needs the practice, but I bet it will keep happening cause she is friends with the owner.

I am taking it as that kind of opportunity, but it's poor timing for me moving to the old eco hut. I just started a class that's fifteen weeks long, and I've already paid for my vegetables through November this year, so I think I'm sticking it out in NYC for a bit. I'm trying to figure out what my bliss would be while I'm here. Considering yoga-teacher-training...

I really fucking want a job. I am going to bitch about my lack of one. I don't have a national insurance number (yet, it's being sorted) and I have no experience aside from 3 weeks working in a library and being Amanda Palmer's merch girl that one time (and performance/artsy things that won't exactly get me a job that...you know...makes money).
I need a job because:
I am always broke from not having one.
I am basically eating other peoples' money.
I really need something to do during the day.

Plus...I know I'll probably just hate it in the end...but I really like the idea of having a job. I would like to go out and work.

Although my job is kinda the suck and involves working alongside lots of stupid people that mostly get paid more than me despite being barely able to tie their own shoelaces, I'm not going to complain about it just now.  Instead I shall marvel/gush at the fact that, due to the modern miracle of flexi-time, I have two days off this week over and above my annual leave allowance O0

Wow.
So we made bucks, and I can totally feel it. In my feet.
I almost cried ONCE and luckily my bosses are awesome and noticed when I was overwhelmed.
I learned on the spot SO frikken much.
I'm SO proud of myself.

I did a table of eight. By myself.

The band that played was good.

And though I'm really glad it's over and that I'm sitting, it was a good night.

My girl-boss hugged me. And told me she was so glad I was there. And that made me feel super super good.

But my legs&feet hurt nonetheless because hey, they're feet.

I work in a department store. It's ok. For the time being.

I'm in a prickly situation now-slightly. After moaning all last autumn about not getting more responsibility/challenging duties, they put me to run the Christmas shop. I did well. They liked me doing it. So now they want me to go for supervisor position. I got a (small) raise, which no one really gets at the moment as it's "recession". My manager has "plans" for me.

What they don't know is that I'm going to university next autumn and obviously, will at least switch into part-time. I feel a bit mean. But I can't really live for them.

They will probably still keep me. I'm just a bit nervous of the discussion where I reveal this...

Also, I feel a little bit satisfied of the situation, as the manager who wants me to be a supervisor didn't like me that much before. I think it's mainly because now he's seen I'm useful, and if he developes my skills it will look good for him... So it's all strange office politics

currently i work at a healthy dog place in west hollywood. it's really cool and i love the people but i get SO BORED because i work in doggy daycare which is very fun (usually) and spend all of my 8 hour shift mainly with just dogs, which i dont mind but when they're all really well behaved and sleepy it gets boring cause there's no one to play with or anything, so i usually listen to music, draw, or play out of my logic book...my biggest issue is that i dont get payed nearly enough for all the extra shit i do and it pisses me off, hopefully at the least i'll be getting more hours next month so i can actually pay rent AND bills because right now it's not cutting it (but i actually blame that on my hubby's dumb ass bass player for that one)

i also just had a job interview at the denny's down the street, i should be hearing back this week if i get to do a tryout or not and i really hope i do because i REALLY need the money...if i do get it i'll be working the late night shifts which i'd like actually, but then i'll do that and go directly to my other job and then back to denny's again with only a couple hours in between to sleep, but not enough since i'd have to wake up early to catch the damn bus...

When you tell them, start with "I've been thinking about this for a while..." and not "I decided a year ago..."

If they think you've known for a long time, but didn't bother to tell them, it's worse than if you were waiting
until you'd made a final decision about school.

For that matter....  do British companies do employee tuition assistance?  Maybe they'll help you pay for school....

They wouldn't, no. Some might do, if it's related to the area directly and it would be an employee who is appreciated and been there for ages etc etc.

But I'm in retail, which is a bit crap, and this is why I want to study, and I'm going to study psychology, which is not really directly related. But I don't think they'll be very upset really.

The store manager at my job has always treated the guys really badly - tons of them are leaving/have left because of him.  He used to treat the girls a little better.  Not anymore.  One of the girls must have done something to piss him off and now he treats all of us like shit as well.  So yeh, I hate my job.

I'm trying to decide what to retrain in so that I don't spend my life stuck working casually in retail, but it's not easy.  I want to make sure whatever I study this time around actually has some employment prospects so I don't wind up in the same situation again.

I hate when the hotel has events that go until 12. Then all the stupid financial paperwork stuff takes me until six to finish because the computer is super slow, and by the time I have it ready to take to the accountant it's already seven, and then I don't clock out until eight. I like having everything ready by five so that I can get it the accountant's office by seven so I can leave on time.
Gah. I love my job.

I know the feeling.  I also studied social work and on one of my university work placements I worked in a mental health ward that was so beaurecratic that I could hardly do anything without stepping on the toes of the psychs etc.

What country are you in?  I'm in Australia.  When did you graduate?  I graduated in Dec 2008 and have been looking for a social work job ever since.  I have basically given up on ever getting into the industry and I am currently deciding what to retrain in - hopefully something that actually has entry-level jobs.

Good luck with your research project!

I think i'm going to drop all of my AP classes next year so I can work during the school year and not have to study for shit, and still have time to practice like there is a gun to my head. Just an idea, haha.
^I guess this is me bitching about my unemployment..

But, my mom does merchandising, basically she sets up displays of things (socks, underwear, cd's) depending on the company, and she's done a few Keurig coffee demos. With those, we get a TON of free coffee, and the machine and keep whatever is left over. Luckily, she hates doing those, so m sister and I alternate doing it, and get paid just to show people how it works and blab about it and give them free coffee. Fun. I think we're doing more in May, which is good because I need money.

A pair of my friends bought a farm upstate in January, and they want to run a 10 person csa and perhaps also do farmers markets with their veggie crops. They want a farmer to live up there full time as they're still going back and forth and keeping their jobs in the city. I'm totally interested in this. I went up there yesterday to get the grand tour and talk about what they're looking for. I'm going to think on it and talk it over with my people (because maybe there's something there that I'm not seeing). The answer feels like yes. It's quite the opportunity. The pay is tiny, but also included are an apartment and vegetables, and living space and food are my two top expenses as is.

The only thing is that getting out of the city is messy logistics. I'll need to find a subletter for my half of this apartment, and then there's the actual moving part...

Today, I went up to the till to write something out and while I was there, I served a customer. When I got back on the floor, the boss and the girl I asked to cover the door for me were standing at the door, having a pretty intense conversation with the guy I'd just served. He left, and the manager shouted stuff after him and then reported him to the shopping centre's security. So they found him and brought him back to the shop, where he refused to be searched (he'd set the alarm off, hence the intense conversation). There were loads of security guards there, and then an off-duty policeman got involved. There was quite a lot of shouting and then the police were called and he still wouldn't co-operate. So the police searched the rucksack he had with him and found nothing. It was quite the event.

It was quite the event.
ummm.....

Someone didn't forget to remove the inventory-control
tags on his stuff she rang up, did she?

I didn't even, they checked his bag and there were no tags on anything haha. Totally wasn't my fault this time!
Hmph.....

Cellphones sometimes set the things off, especially if you receive a call just
as you're walking past the sensors.
Putting one of the sensors in your sister's handbag sets them off too. Not that I would ever do such a thing.....
So I went to our new baseball team's home-opener last night, and they had fireworks, and the parking lot
was littered with the paper casings of the shells that had burst overhead....  You know, the casings totally
saturated with black-powder residue....

...and my sister was flying out this evening from the airport...  You know, the one with the explosive-sniffing
sensors at every gate....

I didn't, but I really thought about it....  >:D

I decided not to go back to work at the hotel, and instead I get paid $150 a day to babysit two kids for five hours. I get more in a month than I got from the hotel, and it's a lot more fun. Yay!

I recently lost The Coolest Job ever (caps totally necessary) and I'm basically back at square one. I actually hate being employed and that was the only job I've ever liked. I don't know if I can go back to working at pizza places! Someday I'd love to find a way to make a living without being EMPLOYED exactly. Or I could become a librarian.

What was the job? sorry you lost it though :(

My boss keeps asking me if I want to book holidays and I keep having to give her ambiguous answers like "I haven't booked any yet" which is true, but I am planning on being in France for the entire summer. I think the assistant manager has an idea, but I don't think she'll say anything to the boss boss.

i worked in a combination head shop/clothes store and part time as a counter girl at the connected tattoo/piercing shop.
it was amazing. i got to have green hair, free piercing, i could listen to whatever music i wanted and i acutally KNEW things about the products. most other jobs i've had, i felt a bit like it was halloween all the time, because i had to completely adjust my appearance and personality. alas, awesome jobs cannot last forever!

i enjoy the job i have right now, it's not my dream job but i can definitely see me staying here until i do get my dream job/s

my hubby is now planning on possibly going to art school so he can become a tattooist :D which is totally exciting

i have to admit i would love to be a tattooist too and i used to be really good at art back in the day but then i had an evil teacher who told me everything i did was shit just because she didnt agree with how i did stuff so i stopped doing it cause she pissed me off and now i'm pretty good still but not as good as i would have been if i had kept going which makes me sad so unless i can get myself back into it when he becomes a tattooist i'm gonna be his piercer cause i'm good with that

I'm so tired of the all the crap about my work. My phone never stops, and i'm always getting emails.

I haven't taken my annual leave for the last 2 years. So this year, i decided to take 20 days off, i'll turn off my phone and read lots of books.

i'm a waiter/kp/cover chef/general dogsbody at a café in a posh department store in my town.
i've been there for about a year and a half and i'd never had a job before this. it's pretty rad.
i also occasionally get sent to another café to manage it when the person who normally runs it is on holiday, which is annoying because it's in edinburgh but it'll look pretty rad on my cv i guess.
i've done a few nvqs whatever they are, i'm currently doing one that's actually a hnc and it's all free and done through work and based on observations so i'm basically getting qualifications for being fucking awesome at my job.

howevs, the pay is crap and i regularly struggle to eat for large portions of the month.
also, there used to be this really tight-knit, close bond between all of us who work there but that's been disappearing recently because people are moving on and we're expanding so we're hiring new people and idk i'm thinking it might be time to look towards jumping ship.

I went into work today cos the rota that was posted online clearly stated that I was to work tonight, tomorrow night and Saturday night. On going into work, I discover that on the rota posted in the staff room, I am only down for Saturday night. Which is such utter bullshit. I spoke to my boss and he was all "You read it wrong". I'm not a fucking idiot, but I thought maybe he's right so I went and checked again and no. I was right.

So anyway, this week I have one shift which is definitely not enough to pay rent and bills and other such expenses. I am good at my job, I have no idea why they're giving me one fucking shift a week. Not long ago, they said they were cutting back on hours but they are STILL hiring, which makes no fucking sense whatsoever. I am angry, this is such complete bullshit.

The money isn't very good- but I'm mostly doing this for a woman who I think is pretty rad. She gives me money for making her happy and life easier for her, or at least somewhat, so whatevs.

tomorrow: 8-5:30
wednesday: 8-5:30
thursday: 8:30-7:30
friday: off
saturday: 9-5:30

normally i wouldn't mind but a) fuck off with that eleven hour shift and b) I AM A FUCKING WHEEZING, SPLUTTERING, PHLEGMY MESS OF DEATH AND I AM VERY LIKELY TO DIE AT WORK BECAUSE I CAN'T FUCKING BREATHE

Because she still doesn't know how to do half of the things they teach on the course.
It's not just her fault, she was telling me they only skimmed parts of the course because there was 8 in their group.
But it's still ridiculous that with 2 trainers in the city, countless stores, 8 people, and 5 days, they didn't think to split the group to make it more practical.

I'm bumping another thread.

It appears that people at work have singled me out for ridicule or something. They make fun of my name in a way that seems like they're just having a bit of a laugh. I don't know if I'm just being paranoid but they're really going out of their way to do it. Today, one of them posted a picture on my wall of one of the words they usually call me. Just to piss me off. They do it constantly and I try not to care but it's really grating. Perhaps I'm being petty but it's really just the lack of respect that annoys me. Also, I'm not sure but not long ago they invited me out and got really weird when I said yes. They told me they'd meet me at a club, so I got all dressed up and that, and then they were still weird about it. I was almost certain they weren't going to show up and just laugh at the fact that I was waiting for them on my own. Part of this might be paranoia from past events, but it just stinks of high school.

EDIT: I kind of want to report the girl who posted the picture cos she is quite clearly the instigator but the problem is, she's a supervisor. So if she were to find out, it would be quite easy for her to make my life hell.

The worst bit of my work/course is the 'personal development' crap. We have to do an outreach thing so ran a stall at Cheltenham Science Festival which was super fun but now I have to write wishy washy reports on what I learned from the experience. I hate writing things that include words like communication skills and teamwork. I get that the outreach itself is important, but writing about it seems like jumping through needless hoops. A few months ago I had a 3 hour session on 'creative thinking'

My boss is pretty homophobic towards me. He's made some comments that made me twinge, and when I replied to him he told me to shut up and then went on to say that the other gay co-worker never complains when they make gay jokes around them.

Yesterday, a co-worker and I were discussing the quirks of ASL and how the sign for 'funny' is similar to the sign for the n-word. My boss thought it was interesting. When a Black family left I said good-bye to them like I do to all the customers, and my manager used the sign for the n-word towards them. Not cool.

He hasn't said anything like, 'that's so gay', around me. If he does, I'll probably blow up in his face.

He's not even the greatest manager in the world. What manager sleeps on the job? Spends their time checking Facebook, eBay, Google Maps, and playing video games on their phones, while working? That's what mine does. Fuck, it's so annoying. And he gets bitchy when I'm 5 minutes late.

Thanks for the support :) It's a surprise given the amount of work I have to do for it, I was expecting it to be another 2 weeks away at least. These meetings always stress me out because I'm just a PhD student and I'm not entirely used to things like dressing smartly and giving presentations to people. I also get a bit scared because my industrial supervisors are an engineering company full of manly men and I'm a somewhat nervous physicist trying to be an engineer. I'd quite like them to offer me a job when I graduate.

Virginia (duh)
North AND South Carolina, Georgia (southern USA, not southern Europe), Florida, Maryland,
Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota,
Utah, Wyoming (no, really, there ARE people in Wyoming), Washington (state), California,
British Columbia (that's Canada if ya don't know), the Czech Republic, England, Australia,
and France... (That's the ones that I remember seeing.)

Also, two fairly large men in drag (not super-dressy, just casual clothes.. and VERY red nails.)

At the diner I worked at in hs we had a guy who came in either in fatigues or in drag. Every now and then he would be in fatigues but his nails would still be bright red. He always seemed like the most interesting person.

Okay, update!

I haven't reported and now I kinda feel bad for the guy. It goes like this. We have competition and our competition is making 2 grand more than us a night despite that their service is way shittier than ours, and have less products, and we have better ice cream flavours, etc.. AND THEY HAVE A YELLOW CARD on their food and safety pass, which is basically a conditional pass which means they meet the requirements but they're not above and beyond and there's always a small chance of food and utensils being contaminated. But people still eat there because celebrity's eat there.

Anyway, I digress. My manager that I'm complaining about is only 2 or 3 years older than me. So he's fairly young. It was his idea to open the store in the location we're in right now*, even though his parents told him not to, and they fought a lot over it. And because we're making way less money than our competition we're losing more money than we're making and therefore people are slowly getting their hours cut off and my other manager told me to start looking for another job because the future of our store doesn't look too bright. So if I complained about my manager (the one that opened the store) he'd get in shit, AND on top of our store losing so much money it would just be a big fuck-you to everyone else if my complaint affect everyone else's job. Does this make any kind of sense?

But with that all in mind it still makes me wonder why he does fuck all if he knows the store is losing so much money.

*The store is located in a really comfortable neighbourhood. Rich people come into my store wearing Rolex watches, parking their BMWs and Mercedes Benz outside, with their kids who all have $900 iPhones and BlackBerry's, and all have really fake tans and platinum blonde hair. And 88% they're really snobby, too.

PS. Does this thread appear to the general public who aren't signed in? I mean you can Google The Box but only if you use correct keywords. Just really curious. I don't want him ever to read this, if he ever does. I know I've complained in the past and I've never been reprimanded for them, but just in case. Thanks!

We are having guests and want the house to like nice so we started this home improvement project 3 weeks before they arrive. I'm sure you don't have anything else going on right? Also, can you do that for next to nothing? 'Tis the season and all that.

My boss gave me only one shift this week cos I was unable to work one day this week. We're open three days a week and I could work two and everyone knows I'm one of the best employees but apparently they didn't think it was ok for me to regard education above working in a failing club.

Currently translating a 8 pages agreement. It's sooo boring  :-\
I'm not surprised people tend to sign such agreements without even reading them.

I hate taking work home but lately i have to do it almost everyday.

My work fucked me over so I'm not getting paid until the 20th of December. YAY! I love surviving on $20 a week and having to use my credit card for super important stuff then worrying that my paycheque is going to the credit. UGHHHHHHH.

All of you remind me why I quit my job this time last year and why I'm glad I don't have a job, and why I'm very greatful to my Mom for letting me live with her (although I do pay for a good chunk of stuff with student loans because it's a good idea to ruin my future with debt).

I'm really sorry you all are having such a shitty time with work.

Now for some cheer!
This is the time of year I love my job most.
Consantly busy, lots of people on, tonnes of laughs, loud music, and just a whole lotta fun.

Granted, as soon as my shift is over I'm definitely glad.

I got a job interview which would basically be perfect, cos more hours and closer to my flat (though my other work is like 6 minutes away), more understanding about uni hours cos it's in the student union. Soooo I really hope I get it!

So I have my first day of work experience at a high school behind me. It went okay, the students did what I expected them to do, but they're all such slackers (well, except for two or three of them). They're so so lazy, they're only willing to do the bare minimum to pass, everything that's just that little bit more is too much to ask. When they're done doing the bare minimum, it's impossible to motivate them to make it better, which leaves me with a bunch of students that are just hanging around and talking. I just hope they'll work with me when my teachers are coming to see how my work experience is going.

Winter + delivering the mail = horrible. I need one full hour to warm up when I get home before I can actually do something. Taking a shower does help a tiny bit, but my hands stay cold afterwards. It's a minor nuisance but when you want to play piano/guitar it's kind of important...

So, one of my students was packing up his stuff today, 15 minutes before the end of class. I stopped him and told him to continue working. His work wasn't done and class hadn't ended yet. He looked at me, baffled because I asked him to work on. He stared at me for a minute and then said: "... you really want us to work ALL THE TIME?" as if I was asking him something extremely ridiculous! They think they can get a break for every fifteen minutes of work they've done! Oh man... teaching high school isn't my thing, I hope I can find a job at a college or a art academy, where people come to learn, because they want to, not because they have to.

Our regional told us to send in an incident report about a "fainting" customer because it was too hot.
They won't put air con in our store because it's too small.

I just had to score my students' assignments. They had to make typographic posters with a space theme. It broke my heart because I had to score the best design worse than the most awful out of balance design. The girl with the awesome poster forgot to hand in part of the assignment and handed it in too late. Even if she'd been late, but would've handed everything in, she would've been graded 15 points higher. If she'd been on time, too, she would've had 87%. It makes me sad.

I'm getting burnt out at my job. I'm just totally bored with it, and motivating myself to sit down and complete some work is nearly impossible.

This sucks because I work for a really good company and make decent money (not rich by any means, but enough to live on my own with some cash to spare). This company is also gay friendly, which is amazing because I live in a place so synonymous with intolerance that I dare not speak its name (yes I do: Alabama).

I hate bitching about this, because it's basically "wah, I have a really good job but I'm bored." But I am! If I were to switch companies it would be to do very similar work, but I've considered it because a change of scenery might help. But then it might not be as good of a company. I wish I could get motivated.

^I started to knee-jerk reply to this earlier today and then decided to back off and give it some thought first. Lately I've been very concerned with the idea of doing things that I find enjoyable in my free time. This is largely due to a breakup a year and a half ago, and me feeling insistent that I need to make myself happy. But now that you mention it, I think I've crossed over the line from doing things I like to being self-indulgent. Maybe this is part of the problem - that the deciding factor of what I do in my spare time is frequently "this is the easiest fastest path to enjoyment" instead of "here is a thing that once I invest time in it, I will be happy with the outcome." I have neglected my hobbies. It is possible that a sense of accomplishment at home would lead to a desire to have this same feeling at work.

Maybe I've been so self-indulgent at home that absolutely nothing at work could inspire me, because it's not like there's any part of my job that is self-indulgent. Giving that some thought.

I kind of hope that's the case, because it could be a relatively easy fix and then you wouldn't need to find another job. I know that if all I do is going to my classes and then come home and do a bit of schoolwork and watch TV, I get tremendously restless and bored. I need to challenge myself in some aspect of my life, otherwise all of it starts sucking.

Yay!! I really hope that once all is said is done that they decide they'd like you to work there permanently. It'd be wonderful if you got a job out of this program, and it sounds like you're a really good fit with that place.

^Yes, and thanks, actually, for giving me something to think about. I did spend last night being far less self-indulgent, did some housecleaning. I'm planning to work on hobbies this weekend.

Also, I spent a lot of time online with a girl that I met sometime last year when the time really wasn't right for me, in terms of post-breakup issues. Recently we've been chatting a lot lately, and it's been pretty flirty. Last night was full of flirt escalation. Eeeeee! I know I sound all dorky and school-girlish, but damn. It's been a long time. I'm totally cool with this just being flirtation with a new friend, but I liked that there was a hint of "yeah, but it could be something more, too" last night.  ;D

The next three saturdays, I have to give classes about linocut (a printmaking technique). Which I haven't actually done myself, before. So yesterday I made my linocut example which turned out good. Today I'm going to try printing it. I hope it will turn out okay! I have a while to get the printing right, though. The kids don't have to do this step until the last week.

The teacher I'm doing this work experience for liked my idea, and thought the design process I want the kids to work with was excellent (they have to make their design on black paper before actually cutting it. This way they have to colour the parts they have to cut away/that won't get printed white).

I'm kind of excited because I like this assignment, and it's one of the most thought out things I've done for my work experience. Partly because I have never done this before and partly because it's a class with "difficult" students (there are four kids with problems like autism and psychological issues, so they need A LOT of structure and clear language). So that last part makes it kind of nerve wrecking, too.

One of my students had an epileptic seizure during my class today. Luckily her class mates know what to do in this particular situation. They all took on their assigned roles without even as much as a pointer from me or the other teacher.

Even though it was only a mild seizure, compared to others she's had when I wasn't doing my work experience yet (she has them about once a month), it was a bit scary.

I'm really nervous for the class I have to teach tomorrow. The students have to print their linocut. I don't have a lot of experience in printing myself. The paper I chose isn't the greatest, which makes it harder, too.

To add to the stress there are a few that haven't started their cutting or haven't finished. So the logical thing to do would be to put them in the last group to start their printing (they have to print in small groups, because of limited supplies). BUT one of my students is autistic, she hasn't finished her cutting, and she and the girl that hasn't started yet don't go well together AT ALL. I can't risk anything going wrong between those two. Ghah.

It will be quite a puzzle to make it work tomorrow.

Maybe one of the kids who is done cutting wouldn't mind printing later so they can help the girl cut? I thinks great that you have taken an interst in the students and you are concerned about them enjoying the class and getting along well.

^ aw thanks for helping me think! I try really hard, actually, hadn't thought I would actually enjoy teaching (however, i didn't enjoy it this much when teaching the highschool kids. Student motivation is obviously higher at the art school).

It went okay, I guess. Could've gone better, but all in all: the results at the end of class were fine and the woman who usually teaches this class said she was really happy with my performance and that I did great.

It was especially difficult with the autistic girl today. They seem to be experiencing a lot of difficult stuff at home. She obviously has a hard time dealing with this. For the first part of the class she was trying to be strong and not let it touch her, but by the second part she was in tears and didn't want to work anymore. It was so sad. I couldn't get through to her and neither could her regular teacher. There's one girl who looks out for her in class, though. The girl's brother is autistic, so she knows how difficult it is dealing with that sort of stuff. Eventually she was the one who kind of got through to the autistic girl and got her to calm down a bit.

All in all it went okay, all the other kids put in some extra effort to help her with printing her design and cleaning her print making tools. They all felt kind of bad for her. (Except for one girl, but that's a whole other story).

Not really my job, but...

Some of you may remember my being upset a few weeks ago about that job I really wanted that I had the work experience/trial for. It came down to being between me and another guy, and while the supervisors said nice things about my being reliable and efficient etc, the boss apparently got along really well with the other guy and the tie-breaker came in the form of the boss deciding he apparently didn't want to hire any more female staff, so he hired the other guy instead.
A mere few weeks later (at the end of last week to be precise) they've just fired the guy they hired because he apparently had problems taking instructions from the female supervisors and sometimes didn't show up to work at all. I don't know whether to be annoyed about this or kind of smug. Firstly it amuses me that the gender thing met its reversal (because hiring a female staff member would have lessened their chances of the new employee having a problem with taking instructions from girls) and secondly I'm annoyed that this guy was an obvious stoner who had previously been kicked out of the army for having a problem with authority, and yet they hired him over me because they liked his personality more than my work ethic. I hope it hurts that it turned out this way for them.

Yes :(
Apparently they've yet to decide whether to get someone new or boost everyone elses hours a bit, since they have another staff member who started fairly recently and don't want to have to train yet another person, or something. I guess I'll just have to see what happens.

That's what they deserved.

It was quite nonsense that they hired him just because there were lots of female employees. Now that there were lots of female, they shouldn't have employed you for a trial period in the first place.

In the end she gave me an old bike so I could finish delivering everything, and I just got back from returning her bike and putting a spare front wheel on my own bike. Problem solved.

I'm working there for 2 years now, and it's boooring. But when the weather is nice I do enjoy it :)

I don't really have clothes appropriate for cafe work. Everything is overly frilly and lacey and would get in the way, or it's long sleeved, button-up attire I'd have worn to my data job, or it's too short and singletty. I only own two proper t-shirts, I wore the plain one yesterday and today I'm going to have to wear the one with the dog skeleton on it, which I hope is work-appropriate since I don't really have much else. The awkward thing is that they might not tell me if it's not. They didn't say anything to me about my piercings the first two days I wore them, they instead told my course manager who told me when she happened to visit. I hope it's not weird to ask :-\

Wasn't it Forrest Gump who pointed out that asking is how you find things out?

Anyway, in this setting, if I were your supervisor, I'd consider it 'proactive'.  O0

Today I heard that the art history teacher at the part time art institution I attend will go in maternity leave at the end of august. I'm going to take my chances and apply for the job on Saturday. They're not looking for applicants yet, so I hope I'll be one step ahead. I'm not sure this will work, as I'm positive that there are other teachers within the school who'll also be able to take on these hours. But at least I'll have tried. It's not even a full time position, but with these temporary hours for a few months, they'll sooner consider me than someone else, when other hours open up.

I'm having the sort of night where I've stayed home from a party I was supposed to go to and am instead stalking my workplace on facebook and feeling really sad about moving on. It's one thing with relationships with people, but this is a new level of pathetic. There's a bar I'd like to apply to, but I think I need to speak to them in person because otherwise they'll look at my degree combined with how short term most of my work history is and think I'm not interested in sticking around. I just wanna settle down somewhere for at least a year or so D:

Dunno about Middle Earth, but here in the US, the average tenure of staff at
pretty much any bar or restaurant is measured in months, maybe weeks.  As
long as the old management isn't sliming you, I doubt they'll care.

...but anyway, in-person dealings are always preferable - it lets them meet you, instead of just your CV.

^Went into the bar today, had a chat with the manager and gave her my cv. She only skimmed it, but seemed happy enough. She didn't mention any problems with my appearance either, it seems like a pretty cruisy place in terms of hair and piercings etc. Hopefully I'll get a call this week for a trial next week. I think if I get this job I might even like it better than the one I had. It sounds like they're looking for someone who will stick around and try to move up within the company, too, which I'd like to do.

I got a job a week or two ago and I love it, but full days at that combined with nights at the club make weekends really shit. This past weekend, I worked Friday 5-8, 10-3.30, Saturday 8.45-6, 10-5 and Sunday 9.45-6.

On the bright side, L had run a bath for me with smelly bubble bath and candles and a glass of wine and it was so lovely <3

If by staying, you mean living together then not yet but very soon I think. There's an issue with his flatmate (he might have to move out if L does, and L doesn't particularly want to do that to him, obviously) but hopefully they'll find a way to resolve that.

That's great that he is being so considerate of his flatmate. I hope you guys get it worked out :)

When I got to work this morning after staying home sick yesterday, my co-worker told me I'd missed cake and puppies day, and gave me some leftover cake. At first I was sad about missing the puppies, then I realised how awesome my job is that we have cake and puppies day (which is admittedly more for the students, but staff get to play with the puppies/eat cake too). I love my job <3

Puppez!  (and cupcakes...)

I bet your town has an animal shelter... and they probably let people volunteer
to come in and walk the dogs...   Yup! I forgot if you're HERE (http://www.wellingtonspca.org.nz/volunteer.htm) or HERE (http://www.spca.org.nz/GetInvolved/Volunteering.aspx)

I feel guilty for being so happy about the extra hours I have at the school. One of my teachers (I also follow a class there) is really ill with breast cancer and will be out for at least half a year. One of the more experienced teachers is replacing my teacher and I'm replacing her for most of her hours. I don't want my teacher to have cancer, but I am extremely happy with my extra hours. I feel like a bad person.

^thanks, I know, it's just weird. I'm fully happy with my new hours now.

So one of the groups I'm teaching is a 12th grade. They're graduating this year and have a shot at winning a prize to encourage them to stay in the art "business". It's really uncommon for a first year teacher to get this group, they usually ask the more experienced ones, but I guess I got "lucky" to substitute for this group.

Anyway, this also kind of means I have to prove myself and really make this work. I had been struggling to find the right balance between my own input in the work they're producing, and the student's input. They have to basically come up with works themselves. I can guide them a litte, but not too much.

I made an appointment with another teacher who's also teaching a 12th grade, and has been doing so for years and years. I am really relieved after talking to her, I can throw away the assignments the teacher I'm subbing for had lined up and make up my own, as long as there are a few things in there like a portrait, a landscape, a work inspired by a famous artist, a painting, colour studies, etc... It's such a relief because it's always easier to guide the students om something you know, than on subjects someone else made up.

Just came home from work after only two hours because of crippling menstrual pains and nausea. I'm so glad I have bosses that let me go home when I'm sick, and I got to get some dvds out from the library too :) werewolf movies and warm milk are making me feel much better than being slumped over the issues desk.

I lost four of my teaching hours because we didn't have enough students for that module to keep all six classes. They had to cut one, and I'm the last teacher to join, they had to cut my hours. Just great. I'm now working 8h/week instead of 12, which is a real set back. Ugh. I wish being a young teacher was easier. Now I'll have to go look for a crappy second job, which I probably won't find because I have to be able to combine it with the work at my school. Fantastic.

BIG merger in the spring guaranteed to make my position redundant. Hopefully I get a decent settlement from it; my current company (pre-merger) settle redundancy paying 1 month of pay per year worked, so for me that would be 10 months of salary if that happens.

Well... it's 5:11 AM and I'm sitting at my desk. So... that part sucks. I hate watching ineffective management but the one thing I've discovered about bad management, they don't want to hear about how to fix things. So... there's that. I'm in a career that, while it pays decently, is NOT something I want to give my best years to. (I'm a maintenance guy... fixing broken vacuums and carpet extractors when I'm not plunging toilets and changing bulbs).  :happy11: Ignorance is bliss, right?
