Title: Union Chapel gigs.
Post by: Mr. Leave Me Alone on August 04, 2009, 02:46:06 PM
Okay, so. I know that the puppet stuff is happening in Edinburgh and some people might want to do some of that at the Union Chapel gigs as well, but I've also read a few posts and spoken to a few people who wouldn't mind doing something else.
It's not super close but it's not exactly far off either right now, so maybe it's time to start thinking about it if you are up for something different.
Any ideas/thoughts/comments/etc.?
I know there have already been a few, so if you remember them...post here, I guess.

FOR THOSE UNSURE OF WHAT THEY CAN DO (BRIGADING-WISE)
Firstly Amandas tips: Brigading FAQ
http://www.theshadowbox.net/forum/index.php?topic=3720.0

and my personal experiences with the brigade...for those who like TL:DR

Acts/things people have done for their first act in the past
(http://b2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/00809/22/28/809208222_l.jpg)
Statues (living, dead, semi moving stonelook or clothed)

Clockworks: coin operated things, wind up things eg jewellery box girl

Marionettes

Harlequins and clowns: The best Ive seen being Raliel and Iris :) at the roundhouse and I once did an interraction/clown for fringe medicating afp fans

Stiltwalkers: various costumes from classic look to gasmasks to a Stiltwalking elephant

Human Cavases:- easy and fun for the audience/amanda:- paint and partial nudity.

Jugglers: Khufu did really cool UV juggling with a creepy doll mask, also fire juggling/spinning (venue/front of house permitting)

Musicians: anything goes really, if you play something come along, even better if you can get together as a group stairway orchestra or bathroom organgrinder

Burlesque acts:- eg Fandances lol ( yeah I know Cho aint brigade but it was still funny)

Interpretive dance (probably got the description wrong Emilie sorry)

Roaming interractive Strange and wonderous things.

Also, Many make homemade treats for the audience and deliver them out in costume during the queuing and at any intervals
or just giving the audience instruments and asking them to sing dolls songs blah de blah basically anything goes

videos that you could get inspiration from: someone tell me how to embed here :)

Paradise DVD: day in the life (bits with brigade prep and interviews with US brigade and Marie/Emilie Bera
Roundhouse extras: Bit of brigade in there too.

and when I find them ill embed some of dbbogs brigading videos as they record most of the shows

it'd be nice to do something different, i think doing the same thing over and over gets a little uninspired; this'd be a nice chance for everyone to show off their creativity

I'll be there both nights as well. Not entirely sure what I'll be doing yet but I do like the idea of doing something different to Edinburgh.
The living painting idea is pretty cool. Would I maybe be able to join you in that, Johnny? It's totally cool if you've got it planned already, though.
omg maybe i can dress up as a glow stick!!! hehehehe or not.

I can't help much as I have a friend to look after but I'd love to help in any way I can despite that.

Rach, I'm sure there would be something you can do. It makes me sad that you feel you can't... :(
Lucy, if you want to do the living painting thing, I'll happily help you sort it out.
I'm still trying to come up with some ideas myself.
Meehhh.

Seeing as we aren't rigidly sticking to the puppet theme, is there another theme or is it just "anything goes"...?

anything goes vive diversity but take plenty of time to develop our acts.

stealing is perfectly fine for your first time. Actually its cool either way just take it and make it your own.

there is no shame at all in being inspired by other peoples creativity!
If the Sphinx materialises in time there is no reason that other people cannot be part of this performance piece (I may end up in the role of Carny Barker for this one (watch The Cabinet of Caligari for inspiration) in fact the Cabinet of Caligari is a great film for Brigading ideas!

Just to keep people informed:

I am making a Neil Gaiman Puppet for the show
It will read to the queues using soundbites of Neil reading his work.
(Hidden speakers and downloaded/Paid for Audio)
(hopefully this wont be a breach of some crazy law and blahhh)
Either way itll be interesting for the crowd

This puppet will go alongside Robins awesome Amanda Puppet.

For the 12th GIG I will (venue permitting) Statue as the thought collector.
if not then the clockwork

and his sinister puppets? (yes I am left handed)

 :laughing6:

i will most probably be doing something with butterflies, wearing the mask on the picture below, unless someone has a better or more fitting idea... i'm the one on the right. also up for doing something group-related, but someone will have to instruct me on that then.

EDIT (or more like HELP!)
I also had an idea of doing something with favourite words, since i love words and am curious about strange words people can come up with. I would let them write a word and stick it on me (post-it notes or otherwise), so that i'd become a walking dictionary. Not sure if i'm able to work it out this week though... Thoughts?

Plans for during the day before the gigs? Like...preparing/general hanging out? Or are we all just doing whatever and going to the venue whenever? Which I guess would work seeing as a lot of us will be hanging out together anyway and there seems to be less of a theme than usual...And we have to have a birthday celebration-y thing for the Sarah...

short ones in fact to fit on little bits of paper to put in little origami envelopes with stickers and shiny things

I will be handing out butterfly kisses... Sorry Niels, there will be a mask. Monday I found a very sweet little butterfly shaped hand puppet, I named it Glinka. This is how it looks (a little too sweet perhaps...):

I have no pictures of my butterfly kisses, but I stamped lipstick kisses on papers. Will put them in a hat/suitcase/umbrella/somethinglikeit to hand out. And if I run out of them, I will just randomly kiss strangers on the cheek :P

i think (definitely not all, though, but some) french people are a bit stuck-up, and also the least informed about brigading etc... maybe it's the language barrier, they don't read the blog and so on...

Oh, Johnny, I'm sorry, i forgot all about the poetry thing you wanted.  I hope you have a good amount, if not, please feel free to take any of my stuff from the poetry thread.

Am I still doing the Sphinx thing, Robin?  For the other nights, I'll probably just hang around and watch everyone else doing their brigading stuff, because I've reached my limit  of what I can carry with me to London.
the sphynx is not happening due to time and budget constraints, but the puppet thing is defintiely happening! you are more than welcome to control the "Guitar Hero" Puppet for Friday and I have commandeered a couple of commercially made puppets for the duration also.... I am really sorry the sphynx thing is not happening as i think it would have been marvelous.....I will make sure you get to participate as much as possible in the weekends shenanigans regardless!

Sorry for posting in a really old thread, I just wanted to say the Friday Union Chapel was my first time getting to see Amanda, and you guys made it brilliant. The free hugs, gorgeous little folded envelopes, the masks, the puppets. EVERYTHING! i still have my rose.

I was over from Australia, and you guys made it really special. Also, i was so pleased to see the Piano on wheels man again! I'd seen him playing on down the hill in Edinburgh the week before!  :)

I took some photos of the brigade if any of you want them.  Thanks!
