Title: Songs You Would Cover
Post by: Drizz on August 29, 2007, 07:45:09 PM
Let's say you're a rockstar--or not, it doesn't matter.

What songs do you think you could make a killer cover of?  I'll go first, bitches.

-Garbage Man--Hole

-Mother/Father--Swans

-Milk--Garbage

More to be added, later.

I've covered a lot of Nick Cave and Tom Waits over the years. A lot. It's all a bit cliché.

I have covered Walking In The Sand, by the Shangi-Las

Maybe I Know, by Lesley Gore

Everytime by Britney Spears

Numerous songs by the Rohan Theatre Band

I've translated and covered a few Kaizers Orchestra songs.

Some Brel, too.

The list goes on.

Not all of these covers were good.

Also, Music Box by Regina Spektor and Thank God I'm Pretty by Emilie Autumn. I'll post more later.

I already know that I do a kick ass cover of "Sedated" by the Ramones. I've tortured people at karaoke a few times with it. Er, well...the second time at a different bar wasn't actually torture, I guess. I had people tell me that I did great and ask me to do more songs. It was an unusual experience for me.

Songs I have covered...not all of 'em, just my fave ones to do:

"Stay" - U2
"Love is blindness" - U2
"My Alcoholic Friends" - Dresden Dolls
"only happy when it rains" - Garbage
"Not a second time" - The Beatles
"I'm Only Sleeping" - The Beatles
"I love you" - Sarah McLachlan
"Hold On" - Sarah McLachlan...I've done this one more than any other; I do it in the same key as well.
"Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" - Sarah McLachlan
"Lucky" - radiohead
"Let's Lynch the Landlord" - Dead Kennedys

one of my fave things to do is use a verse/section from a cover song as an intro for one of mine; I got that from U2, who used to do it a lot live. My fave intro bits:

the quiet section from "paranoid android" by Radiohead
the 2nd verse from Sarah McLachlan's "stupid"
the opening stanza from Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road", I jump out after "and that's alright with me".

songs that I am going to cover one day, goddamnit:

"Cloudbusting" - Kate Bush
"The Rain Song" - Led Zeppelin
"indifference" - Kristy Thirsk
"Drawn to the Rhythm" - Sarah McLachlan
"acrobat" - U2
"Heroes" - David Bowie; I've done it a shitload of times sitting around at home - just need to break it out at a gig. Same goes for "Eternal Flame" by the Bangles.

plur

...yeah, yeah - lots of Sarah; the center of her range really suits me.

Some others I also forgot;

The Beatles - Yellow Submarine
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Chicago - I Move On
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (my friends sang and played guitar, I joined in on the accordion)

Anything by Pretty Balanced. I've fallen in love with pretty much every song they've ever released.

Start Wearing Purple by Gogol Bordello. It is obnoxiously overplayed here, but I will forever love that song.

All The Things She Said by T.A.T.U. I have the sudden urge to change it into a slow, haunting song.

Any metal song... I'd love to play accoustic versions of metal songs just for fun.

Saw Red [as a duet] and Date Rape, by Sublime
She's Got You, by Patsy Cline
I Won't Stand in Your Way, by the Stray Cats
Hong Kong Garden, by Siouxsie and the Banshees

and various metal songs into lounge covers. I'll probably think of more later.

I like Nas Ne Dagoniat better than Not Gonna Get Us. . .  I'm a sucker for foreign languages.

Moi aussi.  Thus, before going to Sweden, the first thing I did is record myself trying to sing along to this song -- without knowing a word of Swedish.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcOQMnd1ZkU

And also this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB_to7VwjRE

(It's meaning is completely different in Swedish, it means I love you instead of In the jungle... weird.  And I'm not ashamed to admit in English, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is one of my favorite songs of all time... and at given point in my life you can find me randomly singing Aweeeeeee awemawup awemawup de dum...)

Basshunter is actually a techno boy who looks like a porn star whose most famous song is Vi Sitter Har i Venten, is about playing a video game.

The Swedes make me laugh so much.

Same goes with "Good Morning, Baltimore" from Hairspray.

Even though they're completely on the opposite sides of the musical spectrum.

I totally think that "Robot" from the ru version of t.A.T.u.'s first album would be totally heartbreaking on the piano.

So, If I had the means:

Robot - t.A.T.u.
Dear Salem Laundry Company - Judith Shimer
Guitar Hero - Amanda Palmer
Straight - Amanda Palmer
Boyfriend in a Coma - Amanda Palmer
Mary's Surgeon - Amanda Palmer
Ghost of Corporate Future - Regina Spektor
Pavlov's Daughter - Regina Spektor
Acid Indigestion Pt. II - Pretty Balanced
Perfect Timing - Pretty Balanced

I think Straight would be totally rad if it was played like the chill version of PB's Permanent Guest.

i love covering dolls/amanda songs on guitar. i believe in airplanes is furious but hilarious to play!
lonseome organist makes my fingers tired though.
The Gardener makes me really happy when I play it. Also, Astronaut on ukelele (and kick drum) is a killer =]

elsewhere, i got some great acoustic (pisstake) versions of Toxic by Britney Spears and Stupid Girls by Pink.

If I was in a band, I'd like to open our sets with the Buffy theme tune. As it is, I play Love's Not A Competion by Kaiser Chiefs a whole lot. I'd love to be able to play Love Will Tear Us Apart, but I suck on guitar, so no.

Anything by My Chemical Romance :P

Various songs by Bjork with a tapir doll.

Most of the Dresden Dolls/Amanda Palmer songs, namely "The Astronaut".

"Amaranth" by Nightwish.

Various VNV Nation songs (namely Illusion, Carry You, and Farthest Star)

"Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Be Sued" with piano and horns.

You're thinking of "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White Tees.

I'd cover:
What's Up? [4 Non Blondes]
Landslide [Fleetwood Mac]
Just The Way You Are [Billy Joel]
Brightly Wound [Eisley]
Alone [Heart]
Midnight Train To Georgia [Gladys Knight & The Pips]
Love Song [Jack Off Jill Version]
Every Breath You Take [The Police]
Smoke Signals [Melissa McClelland]

What's Up + Zombie = Bad memories of high school band.
Just add in Smells Like Teen Spirit, Enter Sandman and Even Flow and you have the whole 'cool' setlist put together by our music teacher in an effort to keep us interested. It didn't work.

Thankfully the next year we got a new music teacher who had made it her life's goal to play every known Metallica song on her accordion. She was rad  :headbang:

I NEEEEEEEEEEED to extend my repetoire massively. It has dwindled terribly since I left college... :(

I feel like being an old music nerd - Physical was covered by NIN - it was originally done by Adam and the Ants (my first favourite band from when I was 3 - check them out kids they are rad :headbang:). I am amazed by how many people are still into "Zombie". When it first came out it was huge but I didn't think it would endure.

Everytime I sit down at a piano I can't help playing the intro to "Duelling Banjos" from Deliverance. I have no idea why, but it is now my warm up music. For some reason my favourite song to cover is Stand By Me, always has been and I don't even like listening to it that much - I just like to play it :uglystupid2:.

I want to do an all-covers show sometime soon. I think it would be fun; my setlist could look like this:

I need you - the Beatles
Mockingbirds - Grant Lee Buffalo
The Needle & the Damage Done - Neil Young
Love is Blindness - U2
Do what you have to do - Sarah McLachlan
The Killing Moon - Echo & the Bunnymen
Work - Jimmy Eat World
My Alcoholic Friends - DD
Fell on Black Days - Soundgarden
Minerva - Deftones
On a Plain - Nirvana
Brom-Yr-Aur Stomp - Led Zeppelin

...the only song I'd actually have to learn would be Work, although I haven't done some of those others in a few years.

I actually have covered a few songs. Every once in a while, I'll open for a friend's band at a local bar. I only play covers, because I suck like that.

I've played these on the piano:

Night Recon - Dresden Dolls
Gravity - Dresden Dolls
Mrs. O - Dresden Dolls
Us - Regina Spektor
Love Affair - Regina Spektor
Emily - Joanna Newsom
Peach, Plum, Pear - Joanna Newsom

And these on the guitar:

Good to Me - Scout Niblett
That Time - Regina Spektor
The Sprout and the Bean - Joanna Newsom (I've done it on the piano too, but never in public)
In the Aeroplane over the Sea - NMH (and about ten other NMH songs)
Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie - Joanna Newsom

I'm usually only up for about a half hour, but those sets add up. I need to start writing songs that don't suck.. I like being on stage.

i just learned the chords to Silverchair's - Those Thieving Birds. i had to watch somebody on youtube.com playing it, and then make my own flipping TAB charts in word. it also helped to know that you need a capo on the fourth fret. xD

now i need to transcribe the chords for Strange Behavior, TTBs 2, Ana's Song, The Greatest View, Miss You Love, search for Paint Pastel Princess, and find a decent TAB chart for Fields of Gold (Eva Cassidy's version), since it's in my head due to my Jazz Vocal Ensemble doing a choir version of it. (of which i still have the music).

i can now, also, play the music for Portal's ending song Still Alive on the piano, but not so well on the guitar, due to how Johnathan Coulton's voicing. eap. ~frowns~ i like the sound of the piano better, anyway. so much myoosic.

"Go to the Mirror" - The Who
