General Discussion / Re: Question - The Bed Song
« on: March 08, 2013, 07:03:12 PM »
To me the most remarkable aspect of the song came from the notion that sometimes people, within relationships, don't ask questions because they already fear they know the answer. (More or less what T3 said.)

Iceland produces good music.

Everything I know about Iceland that I know that you now know:

1. Iceland is very volcanic.
2. Magnus Magnusson came from Iceland.
3. Iceland is also the name of a really crappy UK freezerfoods store that makes really crappy TV adverts.
4. Iceland is a funny name when you consider not much of the land is really made from ice.
5. Poundland is another name for a crappy UK store where everything costs a pound. The real fun comes when you look up on a globe and see that no country apart from Iceland would name itself after a crappy shop. Like, there is no Poundland country. There is a Poland. Maybe they just spelt it wrong.
6. Emiliana Torrini comes from Iceland and she sings. Really good songs. Something about birds and stuff.

7. C'mon, you didn't really thing I wanted to come and talk shit about shops that sell stuff for a pound, did you?
8. OK, You're stupider than I  thought.

Grey Matters / Re: Kindness vs. Honesty

Over the years I have come to believe that kindness should supercede honesty, and as NU said, tact should be deployed before considering either.

I was at the Old Red Lion a couple of months ago. Tiny space, quite cramped but that adds to the charm. It's in these types of spaces you get the riskier new work emerging.

Surely the opening two episodes of this series have started the "Deal-with-the-regeneration-issue?".

Anyway, on first viewing tonight I kept nodding off. Nothing to do with the writing but a late night. So I just watched it again and glad I did. Made much more sense with both eyes open.

I've been living in a media vacuum these last few weeks. I am sure my surprise will not stop the world turning.

I think Agonistes has said as much as I would have liked to have said very eloquently.

I appreciate that arts and funding is a contentious issue - practically non-existent in the UK at the moment (no money in the coffers, but still enough to go on bombing raids) and I think my anxiety begins where Margaret Thatcher proclaimed (and I paraphrase)  - "If the arts needs funding, then they should make art where bums go on seats and it can fund itself". Ah, Mr. Wisdom, then you're a hypocrite, surely? If you don't want commercial art, then you must surely be an advocate of alternative streams of funding?

To a point, yes, but not when the funding becomes the "thing" that takes over .... as Agonistes sensibly puts it.

Here's a question for you, Kenny (and anyone else, actually):  is it the frequency of the ask that turns you off?  Do you have the same negative emotional reaction to, say, a musician whose day job won't cover recording costs using Kickstarter to fund an EP?  Or an independent filmmaker who needs start-up cash to hire a crew?  What if the art simply won't get made without the help?

Good question. Gut reaction is it's the frequency. Everytime I open up this board it seems beseiged with talk about the money and the dollah. And I know that's hardly even demonstrable, if you were to start pinning down and ask for examples. I guess it's a sign of the times, but it just seems that money talk is the beginning, the middle and the end. Capitalist art. When I did economics, I was told by the lefties that there are other ways...

I'm not offended by just this venture, I'm getting pretty damned pissed off at nearly every money making venture that frequents these pages so regularly, which to my simple mind ostensibly amounts to little more than "send me ridiculous amounts of money for very little back" but "it's alright dahlinks we'll call it art and you can't ever object to that".

I much preferred it when it was about the art.

I'd also hazard a guess that in commercial terms, 2000 x  $1 benefactors on your college database is better than 4 x $500 fat lazy bourgeois gits.

It's all the fucking language. "Donate, pledge, send us your money to bring our creative visions to life, buy, consume" do all of that shit before we do ours. Fucking get a life. Put on fucking Godot or something.

Jeez, you can do that with just a twig and a few leaves. I'm sure even you creative sparks can sort that shit out.

It would be nice to see an event where the richest in society aren't yet again favoured  above all else.

And they call this an event which is "centrally focused on progress"?
