Mr. Butch Memorial
« on: July 17, 2007, 02:19:43 PM »

I posted about Mr. Butch on the old board, but since  I obviously can't bump that thread over here, I will start this one.
Mr. Butch has passed away. I'm sure that most locals know this.

There will be a memorial at the ICC church in Allston on 7/22 at 8pm. I am going to try to be there, work permitting.

For those of you who do not know about Mr. Butch, search him on wikipedia or even the Boston Globe. The Globe and the Phoenix both did nice write ups last week when he passed.

Mr. Butch frequently brightened my day when I was sour-faced goth kid living in Allston about five or six years ago. Trips to Harvard Ave won't be the same without him.

that's a shame.  i saw mr. butch for the first time last year, sometime in the fall.  he was singing, and just generally being jolly.  it wasn't until a few weeks later when a friend mentioned seeing the same man that someone else stepped in and said, "that's mr. butch!"

Yeah, all the kids knew Mr. Butch. He was a legitimate legend 'round here. If you've lived in Boston in the past 20 years, you met Mr. Butch at some point. Especially if you were into punk music and/or cheap booze (Marty's, represent!).
Word is he used to hang out on the Beach outside of Berklee. Maybe if he'd been doing that during my time there,  I wouldn't have quit. Probably not, but still.

I have deep admiration for people who can make others smile. Who can touch people in some way (shut up, perverts, this is a memorial thread).

Last Sunday's memorial parade through Allston was an amazing and truly moving event. Thanks to everyone who put together this New Orleans style send off. The T-shirts, photos and other memorabilia that were passed out to the parading participants really brought the spirit of Mr. Butch into this walk though his kingdom!! For a brief moment I could swear I saw Len Tower. Were you there Len?

Bill T has created an amazing video that uses footage from the memorial as well as other times in Mr. Butch's reign. Check it out. What I will call the Mr. Butch final bow/encore sequence causes me to tear up every time I see it.

A reminder that the send off benefit concert (help the family with the funeral expenses etc.) is tonight at Harper's Ferry.

awesome video!

there is at least one other memorial parade video on youtube

and quite a few of mr. butch!

reputable sources believe they saw lentower
at the marshalin' point at harvard & commonwealth
he was seen walkin' the gatherin' crowd from one end to the other,
then settled against a wall to see the band gather and tune up

as the parade started, he didn't move, but eventually join the rear guard

as the parade turned from harvard onto brighton,
lentower was seen speedily walking up the right flank,
until he caught up to the band to hear their performance in union square

lentower was seen outside the church again at the rear of the parade

attempts to find him inside the church, and later at the reception
for an interview and an explanation of his unusual movements failed
