Hypothetically speaking....
« on: November 02, 2009, 03:07:46 PM »

...would it be possible to set up a TV channel to broadcast on the analogue signals that are going to be out of use once the whole of British broadcasting goes digital on December 2nd? I mean like pirate radio - I know people have hacked into television broadcasts before, but now no-one will be using the signal thingies, could you use them? And I do mean hypothetically. But not like "hypothetically, yes" and then leave it at that, I'd like to know how it works.

In the states, they're apparently using those frequencies for emergency services since the switch. I've also wondered if you could pirate them and how to do it and how to receive that manner of broadcast. I don't know the answers, though.

The plan is (here in the US of A) to auction off the rights to those frequencies to providers
of wireless services, thereby raising money for the government, and allowing those entirely
altruistic people at Verizon, Sprint &c to bring us exciting new sorts of stuff on our phones,
blackberries and portable computers....  oh, and so they can make shloads of money doing it.

Currently, low-power TV operators are, I believe, allowed to continue broadcasting, but that
will certainly change as soon as those frequencies have been licensed to phone/wireless carriers.

You could, you'd need is a UHF transmitter. Your broadcast could be seen by any tv capable of receiving signals in whatever bandwidth you're targeting.

As for what's happening - That part of the spectrum is going to be sold off in chunks to the highest bidders.

I got caught in the rain on the way home - I was wearing a skirt though, so it wasn't so bad. But still. Pissed me the fuck off.

Thanks, Vipers! x
