I want Thanksgiving! It sounds AWESOME. I think at uni I'm going to have to find some Americans to befriend and then we'll celebrate Thanksgiving together.
Warning: Vegetarian Thanksgiving could be thought of as something like Celibate Valentines Day.
It's not either. I just didn't eat the turkey or gravy. There's plenty of other delicious food to go around. Mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls, cranberries, green bean casserole, pie... mmmmmm.

Thanksgiving is my favorite because it hasn't been appropriated by rampant consumerism. There are no presents, just family and food. I spent it at my aunt's with my dad, son, grandma, aunt, uncle, one cousin, uncle's sister, and her "friend". There was scrabble. We watched Home Alone (man, has that movie ever aged well!). I had a glass of wine. It felt very grown-up.

Masturbating on Valentines day. (Pardon the crudity in an otherwise polite thread.)

Fried turkey, candied yams, black eyed peas, collard greans, ham, stuffing, potato salad, cranberry sauce, pies, multiple cakes, and some orange soda  :headbang:

Christmas is the next big gathering with 80lbs of chitlins!

A brilliant reproduction (somewhat compressed) of Thanksgiving 1619 in Virginia, and the
Indian attacks (that ugly word "massacre" is sometimes thrown around) of 1622, by which
time Pocahontas/Matoaka had left the neighborhood and after which the English settlers
stopped inviting the locals to their parties.

(Note that the Celebrations in Virginia first took place a year and a half before those silly "Pilgrims"
got to Plymouth Rock... )

My Thanksgiving was a lot of work.

On Monday I cooked 2 pumpkin pies and made cranberry sauce.

On Tuesday I made Sour Cream Apple Pie and some pumpkin dip

On Wednesday I chopped my onions and my celery, tip/tailed my green beans, and thawed my 15.25lb turkey.

On Thursday I cooked everything else, all while half drunk (hence the pre-chopping, so I wouldn't be wielding a knife while drunk). Green beans with onions and bacon, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread stuffing, rolls, turkey, classic relish tray, 2 kinds of fudge...

I shared a bottle of champagne by noon (mimosas are imperative) and then drank hard cider all day until I hit red wine with dinner.

And I only had one guest, but the apartment was mine since mother went to Portland to visit her sister for the week.

How did you thaw a 15lb bird in that time?  Did you just soak it in water?

Yeah, cold water thaw. Something like 30 min per pound. Then I stuck it in the refrigerator to hang out until it was stuffing time.

If you're ever in my neck of the woods at Thanksgiving, you're welcome to join in. I promise to have all that for ya.  :)

I'm hoping that I can get enough money together to go back to Arizona for thanksgiving next year.

I pissed off my grandma within five minutes of everyone gathering in the kitchen by questioning the "wisdom" she'd gained from watching Oprah or something that you should throw out your pillow and get a new one once a year because there are dust mites in there (I've had the same pillow since I was three and haven't been killed in my sleep by a dust mite yet!). Then I pissed off my mom by having what I thought was a "lively discussion" with grandma, which she saw as more of an argument. Then I pissed off my dad by "disrespecting him in front of his mom," a.k.a. disagreeing with him over how many potatoes I should mash and which knife I should use on them. Then we ate quickly and quietly and I ran away to my room to hide. I hate family holidays. My mashed potatoes didn't turn out all that great anyway. I think I put too much garlic in.
