RIP Luciano Pavarotti
« on: September 06, 2007, 02:23:17 AM »

Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti has died, his manager has announced.

The singer, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, died at his home in the northern city of Modena at the age of 71.

I'm not an opera fan particularly, but I was genuinely sad to hear about his passing. He was one of the greatest, and probably the most accessible opera singer ever. He took opera out of the theatre and to the masses (singing as one of the Three Tenors in front of hundreds of thousands in open air concerts around the world), and will always be famous for Nessun Dorma (from Puccini's Turandot), the tune that every soccer fan knows from the 1990 World Cup.

RIP.

I was very sad to hear this via radio this morning.

My grandpa used to think he was Pavarotti and sing "O Sole Mio" in the shower all the time. Now they can sing together in heaven! [/end 5 year old thinking]

Such a loss for the opera world. To be honest, I prefered Domingo's sound, but there is no question that Pav was the standard to be judged by when it comes to Tenors. In incredible talent and an interesting character.
I had a coach that worked at the Met for several decades (he passed away last year, sadly), but he used to tell all sorts of stories about these famous singers.  He told me one about Pav throwing a temper tantrum because there wasn't a piano in his hotel room once. Afterwords he sat down shaking his head and said "I ask for so little!" It loses something without the dramatic delivery, but it was funny to picture. He knew what he wanted and didn't except anything less. A force to be reconded with on many levels. Truly sad news.

I find it really odd to see not-that-old celebrity's dying nowadays. I woke up this morning at around 6:31 am, and just watched t.v.. I then clcik on the weather/news channel on channel 24, and I see Pavarotti is deceased. That guy was awesome yo. I loved his Nessun Dorma rendition.

I'm so glad that so many people (not just in the music world) have paid tribute to him today. He is a legend.

A clip of him performing Turandot's Nessun Dorma

FYI, "Opera" is a broad term. There are many different styles within the genre, some you might hate, but some you might actually like..... just my pet peeve as a singer that people automatically make the blanket statement that they hate opera (I know you didn't use those terms). Opera is theater. If it's done well, it can be sublime, if it's not...well..it can suck.

What forms of opera are there? Robert Dombrower, the lead singer of one of my favorite electronic bands, New Clear Sky, now defunct, unfortunately, has a voice which I'd describe as being operatic at times. The way that an Amazon.com reviewer put it was:

Quote
The lyrics are poetic for a change, as if thought was actually put into more than just the music, and my guess is Robert Dombrower is classically trained because his beautiful vocals have quite an impressive range. I would say it's slightly operatic but that would be misleading... Think Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode singing with more of an upper register.
