The Best music of 2009
« on: December 20, 2009, 05:05:26 PM »

We had a thread like this around this time in '07 I think.
Best (or worst) albums of the year in your opinion?

Best for me, in ascending order:

7.Regina spektor - Far
6.Die Mannequin - Fino + Bleed
5.Imogen Heap - Ellipse
4.Tegan and Sara - Sainthood
3.La roux - self titled
2.St.Vincent - Actor
1.The Cliks - Dirty King

Opinions?

1) Crack the Skye - Mastodon
2) no line on the horizon - U2
3) Black Gives Way To Blue - Alice in Chains (comeback of the decade!)
4) Splitting the Atom - Massive Attack (4 new MA songs > most people's whole albums)
5) Fantasies - Metric
6) the Resistance - Muse
7) Hordes of Chaos - Kreator
8 ) the Line - Blair & the Boyfriends

...I haven't heard the new albums by Idlewild, Clutch or David Guetta in full yet, so this could change. Still, though, those first 3 aren't going to move.

1. The Dead Weather - Horehound
2. Them Crooked Vultures - Self-titled
3. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
4. Mastadon - Crack the Skye
5. Muse - The Resistance
6. St Vincent - The Actor
7. Anthony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light
8. Patrick Watson - Wooden Arms
9. Decoder Ring - They Blind the Stars and the Wild Team
10. Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue
11. Converge - Axe to Fall
12. Sufjan Stevens - The BQE
13. PJ Harvey and John Parish - A Woman a Man Walked By
14. White Lies - To Lose My Life
15. The xx - Self-titled

Honourable Mention: The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - It's Blitz

Both Ben Folds and Regina Spektor released some god awful and disappointing albums this year.

I'm not doing this in any order, I'm just typing them in as I remember them. I've also most likely forgotten a few too...

Heartless Bastards - The Mountain
Metric - Fantasies
The Decemberists - Hazards of Love
Marit Bergman - Tear Collector
Yeah Yeah Yeah's - It's Blitz

I haven't heard the new Sonic Youth or Camera Obscura albums yet, so I couldn't add them

Blitzen Trapper- Black River Killer (technically an EP, but it has 7 cuts so I say it counts)
Phoenix- Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Metric- Fantasies
Wilco- Wilco The Album
Fever Ray- Fever Ray
Morrissey- Years of Refusal
Silversun Pickups- Swoon
Neko Case- Middle Cyclone
The Dead Weather- Horehound
Noah and the Whale- The First Days of Spring
Flaming Lips- Embryonic

In no particular order other than Black River Killer by Blitzen Trapper Kicks ALL ass!

Metric- Fantasies

Morrissey- Years of Refusal

Neko Case- Middle Cyclone
I quite like all these.....

In no particular order other than Black River Killer by Blitzen Trapper Kicks ALL ass!
I'd like this one better, I think, if our local (and amazing overall) indie radio station
didn't have the title track on a rotation schedule that puts top-40 stations to shame....

Seriously, once an hour is plenty.  (This is the downside to letting actual
human DJs pick their own music.)

As entire albums, Actor by St. Vincent and Far by Regina Spektor but that's not to say that the best tracks of 2009 weren't provided by other acts.
