Perfume: The Story of a Murderer - Patrick Süskind
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame - Victor Hugo
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
Goodness Gracious - Arto Paasilinna

(Yes, my suggestions weren't very original)

and I don't know whether his books have been translated into English or so but a writer I would really recommend is Jonas Gardell.

Nico, Songs They Never Play on the Radio (James Young )–  Although this is about Nico, 60’s singer/actress/model, it is actually more about the lifestyle of poor touring musicians and the perils + destitution of drug addiction. It’s very sad but also beautiful and fascinating.

The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break (Steven Sherrill) –“A wry melancholy.” Surreal story about what became of the Mintatour of Greek mythology in modern times.

Invisible Monsters (Chuck Palahniuk) – I remember really liking this but it’s been a while. A Model is severely facially disfigured in an accident and is suddenly “invisible” to a society that was once attentive to her. The story jumps all over the place, supposedly imitating the way we piece stories together from segments of lifestyle magazines.

The Catcher in the Rye (J. D. Salinger) – I guess a lot of people have read it or at least know what it’s about from those that have.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (by Patrick Suskind ) – Already mentioned in the thread. Stylish (somewhat conceptual) Historical fantasy. Some people really hate it though..

Thomas Pynchon - Gravity's Rainbow - The only thing about this novel is that it doesn't make a lot of sense at first. Do -not- give up on it though, and keep reading.

Salman Rushdie - The Satanic Verses - I'm going to guess that this will be something most people know about.

Arkady and Boris Strugatsky - Roadside Picnic - I love this. Might be hard to track down though.

Honestly, it's pretty dry read, and I'm fairly sure some of the recipes/formulas are only there
to see if there are any stoners or would-be-terrorists out there stupid enough to try them.

Martin Millar is a fucking amazing read. My three favourites are The Good Fairies of New York, Lonely Werewolf Girl, and Dreams of Sex and Stage Diving. Suzie, Led Zeppelin, and me is also a good read but hard to get into at first.
Also Neil Gaiman, of course, Neverwhere was mentioned, also American Gods & InterWorld.

I'm reading the Discworld series right now by Terry Pratchett, it's fucking funny as all hell. I'm only on book 9. But awesome!

If you've never read Mansfield Park by Jane Austen, get on that shit.
Also Agatha Christie is a regular joyride of reading.
Stephen King is marvelous, as always, I'm almost through with The Stand and it's giving me goddamn chills.

Read Good Omens. They both wrote it and it too is fucking funny.

Colors Insulting to Nature by Cintra Wilson.
It's pretty good but I guess it would depend on what you're after. It's about a girl whose mother pushes her to try and become famous and it's all about her life from when she's a little girl to when she grows up...It's good.
