good lesboat/lgbt movies?
« on: February 12, 2010, 11:43:10 AM »

the straight (or even gay males) movies i've watched during my whole life definitely outnumber the lesbian ones,
so i was wondering, do you know of any good lesbian themed movie?

but yeah, feel free to use this thread to recommend LGBTQ movies in general  :)

the problem with les bean movies is that they are so.  damn.  depressing.  and before like 1995 or something they always ended in death and unrequited love.

'incredibly true adventures of two girls in love'

'if these walls could talk 2' (premium channel movie)

the former is actually a pretty cute, funny movie and the latter is pretty damn good, if it does have its tragic moments.

avoid 'go fish' and 'personal best,' trust me.  'salmonberries' almost killed me, as well.

Better than Chocolate. It is one of my favourite movies.

Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet are pretty damn good too (although Mr Frog has labelled them Sheri's crazy cockney lesbian collection)

And Because I'm a Cheerleader is awesome and funny and sweet.

there is also a documentary out which is, in fact, pure pornography, called 'she stole my voice' which is--ostensibly--about lesbian rape.  the staged scenes are, like i said, pretty much bad porn though.  kinda makes the documentary part seem a little silly, considering the acting quality and the lack of ability to facilitate willful suspension of disbelief.

ha, i only watched it a couple of weeks ago. eskimo scene was weird as fuck. many scenes were really weird / random.
and i was a bit freaked cause KD in the movie looked exactly like this slightly deranged lesbian who used to stalk me / follow me around town, uhmmm.
although my stalker was fucking ugly. cause i guess vaguely attractive people don't become stalkers.

again, i still have no idea what the movie is about, even....something about a four hundred year old german woman in alaska who ran off with a coal-miner dyke or something to germany.  although i do know that although i have been called 'sir' before, i never felt the need for surprise nudity to explain the situation.

I vote that you see "Imagine Me & You" and "Better than Chocolate", and perhaps also "Foxfire" even though it's only subtly lesbian, just because it's a young Angelina Jolie (and the one woman she's confirmed having dated).

Plus it's got Matthew Goode & Anthony Stewart Head! :D

There's a Korean film called "A Bizarre Love Triangle"/"Taekwon Girl" that's supposed to be worth checking out, not wonderful, but worth a look.

Yeah, but you can say the same of films about gay males. Brokeback Mountain wasn't exactly a barrel of laughs.

I sometimes wonder how a film about a perfectly like-able gay couple who end up absolutely okay at the end would go over.

well, there are some, actually; even brokeback mountain was something of a throwback, following some of the more positive movies that it has.  i'm trying to think of a specific title that escapes me, but in the end, the guy got the guy, so to speak; in other words it had a happy ending.  it seems, too, there were also a lot more gay guy films all along, including many that were more mainstream, higher production, and so on.

the celluloid closet is a really good documentary movie about teh gay in films since films were a possibility.  it lists just about anything you can think of, and follows the trends in movies through complete ignorance of blatantly sissy characters to current (well, nineties) movies.  i found a lot of good film titles i'd missed before, or just never known about.

My all time favorite lesbian movie, much due to Lisa Ray, hehehe.  :love5:

Does Gia count as a lesbian movie? Angelina Jolie certainly have sex with whatsherface in it, Elizabeth Mitchell. (I checked haha)

and what about v for vendetta? i've never seen it...

There is a lesbian storyline in V for Vendetta, but it's sort of a side storyline, it just mentions that a girl was a lesbian and she was punished for it. Basically.

Although you should watch V for Vendetta regardless ;)

Read the graphic novel, I'm pretty sure the lesbian side story is not in it (its been 2years since i've read it)
and also Evi was not heading to see stephen fry but was out soliciting when the fingermen assault her.

There's also a movie called Gray Matters. I think it's cute, but as with very many other lesbian movies, it's not exactly that good

I wanna see an lgbt movie where none of the actors are skinny and beautiful. I wanna see average/normal mother fuckers on my mother fucking screen.

that is the exact reason i don't watch the l word.  i don't want to see hot les beans, i want to see ones who look like me.  because that's what most of em look like, not like skinny lil model-girls.

Coming late to the conversation, and it looks like all the ones I'd recommend have already been recommended, except perhaps Antonia's Line, which isn't so much a specifically lesbian film as it has a storyline in it.

There's also Fire, and Aimee and Jaguar, Hours, Love My Life, Ma Vie En Rose, and Transamerica. There was also an episode of The Listener that had a trans theme, but I'm not sure I'd list it as good.

On a side note, Dirty Martini is onscreen in the background for like, 3 seconds in one of the club scenes in Short Bus, which is a nifty little flick, though not lesbian focused. That made me several shades of happy :>

only one I can think of offhand is Kissing Jessica Stein. Can't recall much for regarding the quality, might have to torrent it.

dude, don't bother. the title character is so boring the film stumbles to a stop whenever she's onscreen. too bad, really - the Helen (Helena, maybe?) character fucking rules; a whole movie with her at the center would've been awesome.
