granted they have poor asians doing capcha's for them,
there may be little the mods can do about it

They post, it gets deleted, and the spam bots get banned.

TheShadowbox shows up on google - that's probably where they are coming from.

Tip: don't reply to threads, ignore 'em and report them (reporting a spam bot once is enough - as it sends an email to the mods and we can delete their entire posts/threads from the user's profile. if you send 100 reports it'll spam our email inboxes).

they're caught and deleted/banned quickly, it's a temporary nuisance.

Can't you update the board? from the current version to the 1.9.11? that may stop some bots.

I didn't bump it, I simply promoted it in a botlike manner!  :coolsmiley:

I haven't ruined The Shadowbox neighbourhood. If I venture higher than Stream Of Consciousness I get a nosebleed. So at least those sections are still safe & respectable.

The Shadowbox is actually very well-maintained - especially in comparison to other high trafficked forums or forums of a comparable registration/post count. So whenever someTHING disrupts the normal peace and flow, it's way more noticeable than it would be on other sites.

So the occasional spam bot or spammer (a human troll!) is to be expected, but don't fret too much about it.

Very true. Same forum platform elsewhere has at least 15 bots a day but that means nothing to a good mod. They have notches on posts for this kind of thing.

got 'em.

Thanks to peeps who used the "report to moderator" button :) - that shiz works. but if the bot has 20 threads in one forum, just report one or two and mention that there's more so it doesn't clog up our inboxes. Some of you did, right on - thanks!

a suggestion to the non-mods

if you use the Report to moderator button,
post that you did so on the bot thread.
the mods only need a single notice.

save the mods and us non-mods some effort ...

thanx!

I don't know from first-hand, but my understanding is that there's a miniscule
per-hit payment from the sites they link to.  Internet pharma and such.

There's also the theory that they're sponsored by the spy-agencies of various
countries to mask those countries' more nefarious cyber-activities.

I suspect that both are true to some extent or another.

i'm flattered, but i think the mods are doing great

it might make sense
(or might not make sense)
to have a few people outside the US be able to delete spam.
in europe and oz/nz.
most (all?) of the mods are in the USA,
and coverage is weaker in the early am hours.

Sounds simple, doesn't? It's not - unfortunately.

Why not? Migrating from the current version to the newly one using patches does not work? Is there a need of database conversion? Afaik, you'd need to migrate from 7 --> 8, 8 -->9, 9 --> 10 and 10 --> 11. can't you guys reproduce your installation and try the updating steps?

Needing any help for testing and stuff, Im here.  O0

i'm avaiable to help too.

i believe this is indecision and bill_h's territory.

to do this carefully, takes time, and i suspect money.

i'm pretty sure the d.dolls pay an ISP for bandwidth, disk storage, etc.
(e.g. if they have a test install, costs could almost double for a while)
and they probably pay some labor too.

there could be other reasons too.

these installations and conversions
may appear to be simple,
but all too often are not..

and there are several hundred of us,
who a+b+team_d.dolls
don't want to see in severe withdrawal from
our sbox 'addiction' ; - }

I know! Im an admin at musebrasil.com and Im thinking about migrating our forums to another platform (our lack some features people are asking and any small mod is a pain to do). What would be a simple "run the converting tool, go drink a coffee, be happy" became "run the converting tool, write a regex/substring to replace stupid [rquote] instead of
Quote
, write another regex to properly build the quotes' links, discover that you will have to use computational tecniques you don't even know how to name (recursive programming, recursive computing, or something similar... basically, I need that the code automagically changes every user name and post ID with contents inside the database)".

ISPs costs are the worse part, I guess... but they could try to reproduce the environment on their own computers? I mean, setting up a virtual machine in case of a different operational system and then running the tests locally. I know it is not the same, but if there is no alternative is better than nothing.

the spam on the old/last sbox was much worse than it is here,
before team d.dolls changed forum software

imho, it's no where near time yet, to upgrade again

I was just giving my example. And Im from when phpbb  2 was their software.  ;)

Anyway, I think that upgrading within SMF won't be that complicated (not so easy, too. just not as complicated as my example).

do you know for a fact, if database conversion(s) are necessary?

Some, yes. Indexes are created for some tables, some tables' type are modified and other things like those. Everything is done by their script and it backups your database before the processes begins. However, they recommend backing up your files and database on your own too.

The process, basically, is this:

- Download Large Upgrade from their page
- Untar/unzip/unwhataver the file keeping the structure
- Upload them to your server. Overwrite anything.
- Check permissions to those file needed to the upgrade
- Go to shadowbox.net/upgrade.php (for exampĺe)
- Read instructions.
- Run the script
- Hopefully, get rid of the bots.

In my case Im doing the same process as the box did - going out from software B to A. So there are many more changes to be done than there is here. For example, to test my regular expressions (regarded to how the quote's link is build) I used some links (the text. like, author=lentower link=topic=11024.msg321318#msg321318 date=126997551.8) from here.

cheers

No one's supposed to know, but I'll tell you.......

It's so when one of their suposed-to-be-subtle sabotage patches (the ones that gradually cripple
one's stable, easy-to-use XP installation so you'll have to "upgrade" to a buggy, less-secure yet
resource-hogging monstrosity like Vista or now Win 7), is a little too heavy handed - like the one
last month that caused a lot of machines to boot directly to an un-recoverable BSOD, leaving users
on notebooks without CD-drives to boot from no way to start up at all....

...they can say it was a simple mistake.

Okay. Let me explain it a little better....

- Our forum runs XMB crap forum system (sorry guys! that is my opinion).
- SMF has a converting tool for old versions of XMB.
- This old tools works like a charm for everything in the newly XMB, expect that XMB has changed from [\quote] (\ to scape the bbcode) to [rquote]. and afaik, has changed the way their  quotation links are build from this previous version to the newly one.
- So, converting works for everything: users, boards, category, etc, expect for those things above.
- In our case there is *NO* SMF upgrading, rather, a migration.

Upgrading should be easy because it would be done from SMF to SMF.

I found a method to kill even the most stubborn of spam bots, beyond the usual ip/name/email ban.

huzzah.

Shotgun?
double barrel!

(Len, not to worry - it's a mod/admin trick and it won't affect non-spammers).

Spammers seek attention, my suggestion would be to report the post to a moderator when you see it (it emails us all a link to the post), and that's that. it's okay if more than one person reports the same post, it isn't necessary to post in here.

Just a heads up urrbody, I am NOT a spam bot. I know my display name is suspicious but I don't want my employers finding me. On the good side my display name is the username I use for skype so y'all should hit me up!

Please stop replying to threads created by spambots. Please "report them to moderator" but do not reply to the posts - it adds an extra step in deleting the thread.

the mods are doing what they can about this

appears to me the spammers have found out how to spam
SMF based boards
(the sbox uses a version of the SMF board software -
click the links at the very bottom of any sbox page)

spammers are paying people in third world countries to break CAPTCHAs (sp?),
otherwise using robots.
well under $ .01 for a successful break.

There's SO MANY SPAMBOTS. I just reported like 3 of them. Although I have to admit the text can be pretty funny sometimes. '"With this,We know how hard, City throw in be the maximal lozenge focus in the apple, tiffany vending," BDB kingpin Anoop Mehta said'. WHAT?

even if the details of the exploit(s) is(are) known,

you're a rad fan and sboxer to be reporting the spam,
and even radder to want to treat the mods nice/right

the mods have clued us in (read posts above) about what NOT to do when
reporting spam

i open each spam post i want to read in a new tab,
(most modern browsers have tabs)
and delete the tab when i'm done.

note that once you've read a new post in a thread,
the dark blue NEW icon disappears,
and it doesn't show up on

:)

If you see a spammer, please only report one of their posts/threads - from there we'll ban 'em and remove/delete ALL of their posts. Every time someone "reports post to moderator" it sends us an email, so if you are reporting spambot123's 20 threads, and person B is also reporting spambot123's 20 threads, that's 40 emails to dig through.

Thanks guys.

Ah that sounds easy enough. Btw, I was wondering, sometimes I see these weird names in the 'Users Online' and I click them, and there's these spam-like links in their signatures (Air Max! lol) but they haven't posted anything (yet). Are these considered harmless? Or should they also be reported?

they're bots, which i usually ban right away before they can post. don't worry about reporting them, just posts that slip through.

thanks!

Sure, we report them (little button in the corner of the message box "report to moderator"),
and as soon as they can, our fearless team of mods/admin eradicate the bastards.....

...Those mods &c do have other things to do with their lives though, so they aren't always
right there on the spot to do it immediately.

of course, that would be a stupid way to set-up a spam bot.

Very true.  However, I think the most I've seen from one spammer was 5-10 messages.

I hope the mods are able to find another security measure/registration filter to cut down on the spam bots.  I realize whatever they do won't last forever, but might preserve their sanity for just a bit longer.  :)

not us. but admins could install simple plugins that would block them from registering.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1516

there is other options. I installed it on my forum and the spam surge stopped.

I'm loving the fact that the horny adult chats threads are created by virgin girl xD

It's Lil Lindsay all over again ;)

sorry dudes -- computer was on the fritz so I was pretty useless in trying to weed out the spambots/spam posts.

Now I'm back with a wicked efficient machine so I should be more vigilant in cleaning up the forum.  O0

I tend to find that now we seem to be getting more prolific ones that start loads of threads it's easier to skip them all out...they're actually more likely to fool me into looking if they only post one or two threads!

Humble suggestion:

Another board I occasionally visit has instituted a "your FIRST post must be moderated" policy.
Yeah, the mods still have to deal with each spambot, but it skips a bunch of in-between, and it's
got to be easier just to block them than to go looking for the thread and delete it after it's posted.

Granted, it's a tiny inconvenience for legit users, but only a tiny one.

This sounds wise.
Hopefully, it's just change a config option,
and restart the program thing.

Another option, is that you password changes for the first few posts.
You have to retrieve it, to get your post moved from a hidden hold queue
to fully visible.

Neither of these, also might not be possible,
if they are using some back door vulnerability.
I haven't seen the mods post about
exactly how the spammers are getting in

Installing this version of the sbox,
and testing it, took BillH a good chunk of time
(not sure how many hours/days),
over months.

He also had a number of people test and
critique it before it went public.

I was thinking of something similar. It seems a lot easier to moderate one post than to delete 50.

i don't understand how the spam bots work.  i had to get membership approval through an email when i signed in.  unless that's automated, i don't see how it's possible to spam this board.

perhaps those annoying goddamn captchas would help.

if they aren't using a defect in the forum software or web sight:
you're right, they can automate getting the passsword out of the email.

with CAPTCHAs, they just hire 3rd world eyes at fractions of a penny per CAPTCHA.
that cost does slow them down some

let me be clearer:
the 'people' running the spam bots, pay micro-pennies
to have human eye-balls decode the CAPTCHAs for them.
i.e. the bot asks a human to type in what the CAPTCHAs is,
then goes back to bot-ting

it's been my understanding that in some cases a captcha is run by a bot to determine by human eyes a printed word the computer can't read; for example they give you two words, and one of them actually ends up in a digital print version of a book or paper read by electronic means.  i barely follow that concept, actually.  i still don't fully follow the process you describe any better, though, but if there is no way to make it make money for the board and in fact costs money, then i can see how it would not work.

The bets solution is logical questions for registering. There is a plugin for SMF and is really easy to install. I've installed it on my board and the spam surge stopped. Logical questions like:

"How much is 2 + three? Write in words."

"How is the name of Dresden Dolls 1st album?"

This may not make a lot of difference here,
as most of the reads are done by the regulars.
And the two possible examples I've seen so far,
have both been sbox worthy of discussion.

What amazes me, after looking at he situation a little more closely, is not how
much crap they post, but how many of them don't post...

Go back to the board home page, to the "who's on" list, and count the spambots...
I assume they're all trying to post some vital commercial advisory, about shoes,
or weight-loss products, home-refinance or whatnot, but for some reason, most
of them can't quite get the job done...

Mod Black-Ops teams aside, I think it's a flaw in the bots' coding...  I think they're unable to work
around some [probably absurdly-simple] step in the spam-posting process, that there's some form
or field that most of them can't fill out properly.  It may not be a help, but it seems to minimise the
harm, compared to the situation if they were all working "properly"...

that's actually a kind of spoiled view point. I know - and appreciate - you saying you were over reacting by writing the above remark, but I want to comment on it. The situation with spam here is no where near the "out of hand" point - have you seen forums where 99% of the posts are spam and they flood the first page of every forum? THAT'S out of hand.

any spam msg posted on this forum is immediately removed - maybe something gets left up for a couple hours while we sleep, shower, do other work responsibilities, etc. but in no way has it over run this board and drastically affected the environment here in such a detrimental way. I understand the shit is annoying whenever you see it, but believe you me, it's a minor temporary nuisance than is not nearly as intrusive as what it COULD be. we'll continue removing the junk and look into forum upgrades to prevent them from getting through registrations.

That was the other thing I noticed: the ones that have figured out how to post tend to have
gibberish usernames and usually (but not always) advertise either shoes or knocoff licenced
clothing (fake sports jerseys and the like...)

The special-needs 'bots are more likely to have usernames that closer resemble real-people-personality
names, often formatted [name]##[another name] - current examples: brett38golden, doug8petersen,
errol26ruiz - and they're dreaming of one day advertising a much broader range of products and services.

just block all traffic originating in Pakistan, India, and the People's Republic of China.

...or more likely, throttle the number of new threads by new users?  That might even be
a help with actual new users, although I've only noticed it as an issue once or twice in
all the time I've been here.

Impotent spambots?

I think they are waiting until we let our guard down. Then, once we are blissfully unaware of what's to come, they will all force us to buy cheap knock off sneakers.
That was the other thing I noticed: the ones that have figured out how to post tend to have
gibberish usernames and usually (but not always) advertise either shoes or knocoff licenced
clothing (fake sports jerseys and the like...)

The special-needs 'bots are more likely to have usernames that closer resemble real-people-personality
names, often formatted [name]##[another name] - current examples: brett38golden, doug8petersen,
errol26ruiz - and they're dreaming of one day advertising a much broader range of products and services.

p.s.  I think we actually have at least one real-person-user in the Phillipines, but can't we

THAT would make stop posting, nuisance. plus it wouldn't eliminate the spambots that reply to threads (just the ones that create new threads). The bots are already getting through captcha's to register, so i wouldn't be surprised if they'd be able to get through captchas to post as well.

i think instead the forum software may need to be upgraded, and a few more "are you human?" widgets/apps/whatever they're called, need to be set in place to make it harder for them to register an account - more advance captchas, simple math or factual/logic question etc.

It is getting completely out of hand at this point. So much spam that I feel it is going to push me away from this message board completely. I know it is not the mods fault. I know how hard you work to keep this shit off of here, but this board is under siege. FUCK SPAMBOTS!

that's actually a kind of spoiled view point.

This is not the only message board I frequent. Most of the ones I do have very little spam at all. Maybe I am spoiled by that, but do keep in mind that these boards range from indie blogs to superstar bands. Some of them are just like this one, run by the people for the people and no one is getting rich off weeding out the spam. Some of these blogs are getting bigger and feeling growing pains and staff are outnumbered by traffic and visibility. I think the different kind of boards and how many upgrades are what make the difference, not the will power of the mods. I know some of the people who do this stuff, and know what goes on. I am very aware of how hard you work for this board, and I appreciate all you do and how little time you have to do it. The board and spammers is what I am venting about, which is why I went out of my way to mention what a badd-ass you are.

YOU ARE MADE OF WIN, ROCK and AWESOMESAUCE made from the ripest AWESOMEBERRIES!

Not kissing ass here, that is the fucking truth. My post was venting against spammers, not you.
The scenario you described above as being the true nightmare is exactly what I saw moments before posting my initial comment. Spam was in every fucking section and it pissed me off because I have seen it a lot lately. It seems that this version of the board is being attacked in a major way. I'm thinking of all the shit I don't see too because you are behind the scenes hunting the fuckers down. I wish you didn't have to do that with your time.

I'm really just commiserating the challenge mods face running these boards. Please do not take it as if I think you are to blame for it. I just blame you for other shit instead.

Really?  (Serious question)
I admit my actual internet-technology savvy is limited, but it would seem a simple thing to geolocate
the IPs of new registrations, and disallow blacklisted countries.  For a larger-market board, or a company
with ambitions of global ecommerce, it might be clumsy and overkill, but as I honestly doubt there are
any actual AFP/DD fans living in these countries, I don't see the problem. It wouldn't be a cure, as
there are plenty of spammers in the US, Europe, Russia, and Oceania, but the ones that are actually
posting here are overwhelmingly coming from outside the geographic range of AFP's/DD's market.

Cee

How do you know where they are coming from?
(Seriously!)

Such geo-location is not a simple thing to do

1a) Technically:

Hostnames either have no info about country (e.g. NAME.com), or are
just a strong indication that the computer is in the country.  How
strong depends on the policies of each country's registrar.

But machines don't need a hostname to use the Internet, just an IP
address.  IP addresses don't have country codes, like international
phone numbers.  It's roughly known where the administrator of a block
of addresses is located, but to be sure where the machine is it's more
involved.  This is roughly equivalent to one of the hardest problems
the Internet has to work technically: routing.

And we haven't talked about NAT, proxies, and other subtleties &
complications.

A simple implementation might catch some of the offending traffic.

And if this got done widely, the spammers will work around it.

1b) Administration:

Keeping whitelists and blacklists take a lot of time.  They are much
larger than it appears at first glance.

Modifying the forum software to do this is a large effort.

And constant requests to allow my machine/country to post.

There will be fans who try and join, get blocked, and just go away.
Not punk cabaret love to me.

Etc,

2) Have you done enough programming to understand why my suggestion of
a CAPTCHA to start a new tread is easier to code/test/install, than
your suggestion?  (Some chance it's a configuration option, which
would just require a flip, test, and reboot - but that still
significant effort)

3) To install new forum software, or modify the current software,
Amanda and Brian have to commit significant resources.  I suspect Sean
is a good enough programmer to do it, but they keep Sean very busy.
To do it right they also need more hardware server resources during the
development.  They might save the labor $$$ by finding one hell of a
qualified, trustworthy, and committed volunteer, but there is still
management and communication overhead.

For the low level of Spam we see here on the sbox, if it was my call,
I be handling it the way Team Chaos is now.

PS: I don't know enough about how the sbox spam intrusions/exploits
are happening to really know how much effort is required to stop them.
Nor have I evaluated forum software in enough detail to make
a recommendation.

Captcha or recaptcha aren't the safe anymore. Many bots can read them. As I said previously, plugins with simple questions are the best way to block them from registering. Once they can't get in, they can't post. However, Im not sure how complicated is to install a plugin on this SMF version.

Excuse me if this has been mentioned before (going through eleventy pages of spammy goodness isn't my idea of fun) but what I've noticed has helped stop spam registrations is having a robots.txt file on the site, and also having moderated registrations (eg. must go through email link and then be approved by an admin).  Not too sure how feasible moderated registrations would be on a site this large, or if this forum software allows for it, but it might be a last resort?  I find it easier to skim through the registration list once a day to delete or approve accounts than having to hunt down reported posts.  It would mean registration wouldn't be instantaneous for actual users, but good things come to those who wait, yes?

if you mean to use a robots.txt file to
discourage web search engines (like google.com)
from including the sbox,
i doubt amanda and brian want that.
part of punk cabaret culture is sharing and openness.

your other suggestion is an interesting one.
the mods have to decide if it's doable,

Doesn't necessarily mean that ALL bots will pack up and leave, but it does skim a number off.

reading and respecting robots.txt files is
completely voluntary and optional.
The FAQ you link to,
even saids this.

legit web sites including web search engines do so.
the files were created as a web industry 'self-policing'
effort to discourage government regulation and law making.
(i could go on about why such government effort is hard,
granted the network architecture,
but leave that as a learning exercise for those interested.)

NO spam-bot author is going to respect a web convention,
when they break existing laws,
and have no morals or ethics.

If 'Some' takes a lot of effort, 'None' could be better.

If 'Some' is a very small improvement, ...

What evidence do you have of this?
It could be coincidental.

It's also disagrees with what experts in the field have told me.

Ah, but you can specify * (all) or specific bots - eg. you can specify that google can visit /pathway but all others * may not.number off.

It isn't just google.com that you want to
let in, but bing, yahoo, lycos, etc.
Which gets into the chore of maintainign a whitelist.
As well as the chore of  getting the synatx exactly
right each time you make a change.

Siiiigh. Anecdotal evidence. As in, I experienced a small decline. Yes, it could have been coincidental -- the planets could have been aligned just perfectly, and my daily sacrifices to Goatse, God of the spambots, may have actually paid off -- who knows. It is a small fix that may or may not have any impact, but it takes seconds to upload the txt file.

Whatever, I give up. It was a suggestion.

Some is better than none, no?  (Which is what I said..)
If 'Some' takes a lot of effort, 'None' could be better.

If 'Some' is a very small improvement, ...

SI say this because after installing the file on my (much smaller) forum, we did see a decline in the number of spambots.  Decline, not eradication, which would have been lovely but hey.

What evidence do you have of this?
It could be coincidental.

Heh, the mods might give it a try.

But giving them the pros and cons give them a
headstart on making a decision.

Today's interesting addition to the collection (which most of you missed  :) ) was
a Swedish-language 'bot selling home-refinancing.  (Thank you Google translation...)

How is getting people to wait 24 hours going to alienate them?? It's one day - I'm sure they'll cope.

i like this idea.  new members don't generally come in and create threads willy-nilly, anyway.

it might be a little complicated, but...............you could also require all new members to submit a 2000 word essay on why amanda palmer and brian viglione are special to them, and how they feel they can contribute to this forum as a whole.  what do they bring that we lack?  how do they plan to fit in, and entertain us?  that sort of thing.  a sort of mission statement, if you will.  that plus a social security number, a recent blood donor voucher, and no less than three emails from former educators, or current clergy on behalf of the new member, and as a character witness.  pretty sure that is an extremely secure precaution protocol against bots.

do you need 'Report to moderator' reports anymore?
or do the tools you have show them all to you?
both spammers creating threads?
&
spammers adding to existing fan created threads?

....but if the same bot created 200 threads, a single report will suffice.   O0

yes, of course. :) Through these pages I've mentioned that, but it's always worth noting again!

The most helpful thing to do is to report a spam user - if you see a thread or a single post that's spam, report it to a moderator via the button/feature. If you see the SAME user post another thread or reply elsewhere in the forum, it's not necessary to report them again - since we'll get a notification and remove all of their spam posts/their account from following the first reported instance of spam.

Also, sometimes multiple forum users will report the same spambot/spam thread/post which is the nature of the beast, it's not really that much of an issue because we can see the user name and thread topic being reported

there is no need to create new notification systems as the "report to moderator" button functions well. if you want to speed up the process of reporting a post, you can leave the comment field blank - as it's pretty much understood that youre reporting a post for spam if the thread title is "buy new shoes". however, if there is subtle spam, ie: a spambot that looks to be posting on topic but their signature is a spam link, then in that instance it's useful for you to mention that in the comment field.

My favorite spam message from yesterday.  I love how "a walk in the park" is portrayed as "stroll within the recreation area."

Liposuction is definitely an essential type of plastic surgery that needs to be carried out underneath the guidance of the professional doctor, because problems as a result of liposuction methods could be existence intimidating. Lots of people don't realize this particular as well as believe it is stroll within the recreation area, yet another day time at work, an easy method to slim down, not really considering that we now have dangers included.    (etc.)

Now that is certainly existence intimidating.

Hmmm...  I smell computer-translation.....

Existence... could be the same as "life", no?
and intimidating, much similar to "threatening", innit?

...and yeah kids, lipo is NOT a quick pleasant experience.  If ya wanna lose fat, eat right and exercise.

had a stepmother once who got lipo.  not as a weight loss facilitator so much as 'therapeutic.'  they were removing a giant colostomy scar on her abdomen and rebuilding a bellybutton, because she didn't have one, and such.  since they took out about five inches of skin in a straight line from bewbs to bush, they lipo-ed out her midsection.  she then spent something like a month in an ace bandage body suit with a giant crotch hole for elimination.  she didn't enjoy it.

the spambots will be evenly distributed across the internet.
they break into computers everywhere,
and steal computes
Actually, the ones I've seen here (which seem to be quite distinct from the legions of compromised
machines one hears about being unleashed in DDOS attacks against various corporations and gov't
agencies from time to time) tend to come in bunches from China, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, the
Philippines, occasionally Vietnam or Thailand, and twenty or thirty at a time from various spam-servers
here in the US...  That is (the US hosted ones), they come from companies using providers like [name
not named] who actually have a "report spam to spamreport@wedontgiveashit.net"

This bit from this morning sort of amused me:

Note that the original thread is spam: spammer's IP says 'he' is in China,

for a while I often get this error message
when I try to connect to the sbox
(black text on white background)

Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

I've assume it was due to the spambots all attacking at once,
causing a temporary outage.

but am mentioning it,
to makes dure the Admins and Software Maintainers
are aware of it

Now I'm back with a wicked efficient machine so I should be more vigilant in cleaning up the forum.  O0

huh?

Sean has said another update is in the works,
which I assume will have more anti-spammer features.
That will be another win for the sbox.

But the spammers will keep trying to find ways to post to SMF forums.
(And they now we have one here.)
They make money doing it.
So it's a never-ending battle for
truth, justice and the international punk cabaret way.

(I'm tyring to be realistic here, not a killjoy)

I get the bad feeling that, whatever was changed to make it harder for the bots to
register, they seem to have found a work-around...

I will tell again this: I only eliminated bots from my forum when I installed this pluggin:    Anti-Spam Verification Questions

No matter what Captcha I used, they were able to register. With that, they were blocked from registering.

this isn't a BFD.  report a post when you think you need to.
but two things to note:

* each moderator gets an email in his off-sbox email account,
  each time you submit the
  Report to moderator
  form

* reporting each spam account once,
will get all spam posted from that account removed.
if you like submitting a lot of forms, go for it,
but we prefer you spend your sbox time in more productive ways

I'm so sorry if i bothered you reporting all of the posts, but i didn't know if it was possible to report the accounts instead. I couldn't fully learn how to use the Box yet, so next time i'll try to report the account instead of the posts.

When you report a post, the 'box emails us about just that post, but we'll check for other posts
by the same account, so it's actually better to report only one post per spam-account (otherwise
our email boxes can get a bit cluttered with just one busy 'bot).

Savannah:

we're not bothered,
except for all the time it takes you to submit the reports

btw, BFD == Big F*cking Deal,
which this is NOT
