the ideal sally bowles
« on: March 11, 2010, 06:50:41 PM »

shall we have some fun?

let's just PRETEND for a moment that i'm involved in a production of the musical "cabaret".
and let's also pretend that i need a great sally bowles to play opposite me as i slay the role of the MC.

who would you pick?

help me.

she must be:
-young enough (under 35. the original sally, in the book, was FUCKING FIFTEEN).
-with indie cred, pref someone IN THE indie music scene. so, sorta famous, but not too famous.
ie, lady gaga is out of the question, but someone like beth ditto is not.
-must have great acting chops AND singing chops (or be able to fake the acting thing for a few months.)
-could possibly be a man, or trans, but it would be stretch.

already considered ....
marina diamandis, bianca from cocorosie, carina round, leslie feist (she's a bit too big and not quite flamboyant enough for the part), etc...this should give you an idea of what i'm thinking

could be from anywhere in the world. english speaking pretty essential.

REALLY think about this and try not to waste this thread space with silly ideas, as fun as they may be, try not to derail.
start another thread for that, where we exhume the corpse of nico, etc.

Shara & Zooey would be awesome.
Alison Mosshart would kill it if she puts on a bit of weight & starts wearing girls clothes.

I think she would be perfect. Young is better - Sally is only 19 in the book.

I love Zooey to death but she might have some of the same issues as Leslie Feist.

I second Shara Worden or Marina Diamandas all the way.

Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes) would be pretty awesome as well.

Ida Maria (a bit upbeat), Laura Marling (a bit light folksy), Lykke Li, Mirah, Sarah Blasko (Australian)er.... MEOW MEOW --> other possibilities to throw out there

Shara Worden of the band My Brightest Diamond.

She has an amazing and strong voice. He are two shots from her guest spots on the last Decemberists tour:

*edit: I see that Shara has already been suggested twice since I started writing this! In that case, consider this my agreement with those above!

I was also thinking Laura Marling, but I was unsure... Julia Clarke-Rose (of The Pipettes) might be really good too. :]

Natasha Khan would be awesome as would Marina Diamandas. I thought of Meow Meow too but I think she would be a better emcee and that part is taken. I've seen Sarah Blasko live and I don't think she could pull it off.

As an actress, she's pretty famous -- that's the main issue.  I'd say she's about as famous as Feist is.

And I know she can act in all sorts of ways, but her singing voice, for me, has a very bubbly feel to it -- not quite flamboyant enough, as Amanda said about Feist.

I think some of you people are missing the point... I keep seeing pretty famous names on here... go with Kate Micucci. She's about as Indie as it gets. Her biggest claim to fame was a guest spot on Scrubs. She's a great singer and hilarious.

The woman is fabulous! She was in Machine Gun Fellatio, and I believe she's been part of Circus Oz and other random solo things since they broke up. Her "Bikini Parade" video is up on YouTube also. Love it. The  woman is an amazing performer, and she's not afraid to get her tits out. What more could you want in a lady I ask you?

But the songs are BIG and need a strong voice to get the most out of them.  Not an overtrained voice, but a strong voice.

I also want to throw out there that I'm pretty sure she's talking about a stage production. Most of these actresses mentioned are film stars. Alexa Vega keeps getting thrown up but the musical she was in was a movie. She wasn't running around on stage. No editing on the stage my friends.

not saying I doubt her chops. Just saying its one thing acting in front of a camera and another to do it on stage.... I'm no pro, but I've done both and it's got it's differences that not all actors can handle. Or even they simply just don't translate as well on stage as they do through a camera.

They are, but Natasha Richardson, who played the part in the Broadway revival wouldn't claim a *big* voice at all - depends whether the part is played by a singer or an actress....

I think some of you people are missing the point... I keep seeing pretty famous names on here... go with Kate Micucci. She's about as Indie as it gets. Her biggest claim to fame was a guest spot on Scrubs. She's a great singer and hilarious.

Alexa Vega keeps getting thrown up but the musical she was in was a movie. She wasn't running around on stage. No editing on the stage my friends.

Except that she was in a Broadway production of Hairspray

It's interesting that all the possible variants I had in my mind already appeared here.

I'm absolutely in love with Marina Diamandis's music and her image, still I think her voice would not suit Sally character, though it doesn't mean I don't like it, I love it, love it!
Paloma Faith is also a great option, her singing voice is right-alright for the character and she has that awesome vintage style that is hard to beat, in my opinion.
And someone named Kate Micucci - oh yes!! doubled.

Just HAD to join this forum to get in on this discussion, it may be an unconventional option but have you heard of Lisa Hannigan, she's kinda famous but not overly so, here's a link.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aPe--y2ZB4

also I would say Camille O'Sullivan, because her personality when performing would be excellent for the Sally Bowles character, but then again I think she's in her thirties and may be too old for what you are looking for, but you should definitely check out Lisa:-)

if Alan is unavailable (damn them) or unwilling (damn him) then I'd suggest.. Dee Plume from Robots In Disguise. https://twitter.com/dee__plume (Amanda, if you don't know her band, you might recognise her from the Mighty Boosh.. she had various cameos in that. She's rad.)

oh.. has anyone said Nellie McKay yet?

She could totally be Sally.

she's in the right age range, she's got the chops, and did anyone see her in the Wallace Shawn version of 'The Threepenny Opera' a few years back (with Alan and Cyndi Lauper)? She played Polly Peachum.. and was (by all accounts) quite good.

reckon she'd be up for it too.. if she's not busy.

i'd actually be VERY surprised if you know this woman as  she's a local from Adelaide - Alli MacGregor.
extremely gifted voice former opera singer now has her own cabaret show and is a burlesque dancer also.
Massive personality I think would fit the role of sally quite well. (not sure how old she is.. might be too old..)

also for what it's worth, she was inspired by Amanda's ukelele version of creep to try it herself.  the result. zomg.

I liked these ideas

Zooey Deschanel
Kate Micucci
Lauren Ambrose

I was thinking Missy Higgins. She has acted in Bran Nue Dae... But I wouldn't know whether or not she is interested in stage

Alanis Morissette but she might be too old. I've been watching her in Scrub lately!  :buck2:

Amanda from the Ditty Bops. She would be perfect, perfect, perfect as she is gorgeous, very talented, and into whimsical theatrical silliness and would  be very good at it.

And she looks awesome in a bob.

Shara Worden of the band My Brightest Diamond.

She has an amazing and strong voice. He are two shots from her guest spots on the last Decemberists tour:

*edit: I see that Shara has already been suggested twice since I started writing this! In that case, consider this my agreement with those above!

It's been a while since I listened to MBD but this is a good suggestion.

Forgive me but what issues would zooey have?

The "issue" being potentially too famous.
I'd say it's even moreso the case with Zooey.

Alanis initially came to mind for me too because she is a great singer I know she's into acting - TV, film and even stage - but she's exactly 35 years old and huge (popularity wise) so not the best fit.

Nellie McKay would be rad.

But I suppose I should view the movie/play some time first before I throw my two cents around ;D

No one comes to mind that someone hasn't already mentioned....

Shara Worden would probably be good, Zooey Deschanel could probably do remarkable
things with the part (if you can get her).....

Lily Allen, obviously.
I think KW may have been kidding, but given that the character is a little girl putting on one
giant front, L.A. could be a good choice if she could get into the character.  Heck, she almost
is the character already....

....and last but NEVER least, if you don't feel like you need a pre-established marquee name,
Jessica Allyn would indeed be a great call.

Ah yes, totally didn't think of how huge she is. She just isn't as big in Oz anymore as she hasn't toured here since 1999! I'm sure if she came back she'd sell out, I just felt like people forgot about her, but she is still active in the northern hemisphere.

I also just noticed I wrote scrubs when I meant to write weeds...

Another suggestion

Amber Benson, I don't know her age but I think early 30's. She has an AMAZING voice and can definitely act. She has done TV - Buffy/Supernatural etc, Stage - Rocky Horror Picture Show etc, and Film including directing.

Dee is an interesting choice but it's difficult to think about her doing that without the whole thing becoming a Cyberpunk Cabaret.

Natasha Richardson wasn't exactly a youngin' when she played Sally on Broadway, so Karen could work (in theory).

tracyanne campbell (of camera obscura)
heather d'angelo (of au revoir simone)
emma pollock (of the delgados, now solo)
I absolutely love the idea of Tracyanne Campbell. Her voice is amazing.

Hi, everyone! New to the forum. I've been lurking around, watching these responses. I know the reason no one's suggested her is that she's technically "too old," but damn, I think Kay Hanley would be a great Sally Bowles. She's definitely capable of reading much younger than she is, and she'd bring a nice edge. (She & AFP have even already worked together, though maybe that means that if Amanda thought she'd be a good fit, she'd have asked her.)

I also think Emilie Autumn might be interesting. She doesn't have much in the way of acting experience per se, but she certainly has a very theatrical energy.

And I like the Amber Benson suggestion, too, even though her voice might be a bit on the high side for Sally.
