Evelyn Evelyn - Self-titled CD: What do you think?
« on: March 24, 2010, 09:22:44 PM »

Now that some of y'all are getting your pre-ordered packages (and with download codes being sent out shortly), figured it was appropriate to get this thread going as a central place to discuss the music now that you've heard it.

*SPOLIER ALERT*
- if you haven't received your CD yet, you're going to probably want to wait until you do to engage in this thread to avoid spoilers, but by all means - discuss away if you wish.

I've been skimming the shadowbox and twitter to see what people think and so far the response seems to be overwhelmingly positive! I've always maintained that you have to listen to the CD from start to finish in order to understand the girls, as it makes sense of a lot of things... especially as the songs tell a story.

So, what do you think of the CD? :)

i'll be completely honest.

i was under the impression that the songs weren't all going to be jokes. but i kind of feel like they were, and i'm disappointed.

edit: when will there be lyrics online, and will tragic events be there?

Interesting! What do you mean by jokes? What were you expecting?

Concept records tell stories, y'know? it's the story of the girls and their perspectives, that's how I perceive it.

well, maybe not "jokes;" i mean it's obvious that there's effort. but i feel like they're all novelty-ish and intended to be humorous. i don't know what my opinion of this would be if i listened to the album right now while knowing nothing about the evelyn sisters. but i have been following them since their conception(/when they created their myspace) and my first experience with them was Have You Seen My Sister? and Elephant Elephant. So this project has always been an extension of that, in my mind. And I'm pretty sure those two songs were supposed to be funny.

I really liked it, though a few songs dragged a little. I liked the narrative though, it was very grim, but drew me in, and I enjoyed all the little details. Chickenman is by far my favorite song. It actually has inspired a musical in my head (about something kind of different than E&E.) Then again, Jason and Amanda have already sort of inspired two plays I've written, so I'm not surprised. They are awesome.

I don't really know how it couldn't be sort of... well, how could they have made really serious songs? I'm just curious. I understand what you're saying, but I don't think it's a bad thing. The nature of the story suggests that anything attempting to be serious is so over the top anyway, that it ads a level of humor. I really like that aspect.

the album is heartbreaking.

it is truly inspiring that the twins can write such upbeat songs, like 'elephant elephant' and 'have you seen my sister evelyn?' especially after you hear the telling of their life story.

the genre jumping is a touch odd at times, like a jump from something that sounds like country blues to songs that sound like they belong in a vaudeville show. but i guess it does reflect the different influences in their lives.

the twins should be proud of what they have created.

I feel like i shouldn't critique this after listening to it only once...

But i will say its very odd to be the same age as EvelynEvelyn.

i thought it was so beautiful, and really kind of heart-breaking, though all the songs definitely had a lot of dark humour to them. the actual music behind the lyrics is just wonderful too.

myspace is hilarious.

the stories are so incredible.

Imagine my horror when after loading this into my ipod and starting to listen, I realized 3 songs in that it was on shuffle. Started over again and I am relieved that it flows much better now.

A Campaign of Shock and Awe fucking rules the earth. I love the way Evelyn says "Pitchfork".
Chicken Man? Give me a break! How fucking awesome is that? Fucking perfect!

Those are my two favorites so far, but I need to hear this a few more times before it really sinks in. First listen and I am very impressed and blown away. I want to jam it on a huge boombox while riding an Elephant into the sunset.

i really like the sound effects in tragic events, the album is amazing.
the new elephant elephant sounds good with the more instruments, i think they could of shorten sandy fishnets though.
i didn't know that Amanda could sing that high. is good :)
i still can't make out everyone that features on the album. help?

chicken man!
p.s
i got 11 & 11 for my maths exam today...

My favourites:
"Evelyn Evelyn"
"Chicken Man" (especially the part near the end)
"Myspace"
"Love Will Tear Us Apart"
And the new instrumental piece in "Elephant Elephant" is a really nice addition.

There are only two things that annoy me - there could have been more songs instead of 20minutes of talking. And I'm still not used to the censored lines of "Have You Seen..."

Keeping my fingers crossed to get a tidbit in the New Yorker and Rolling Stone so I can declare the girls "psychic" ;D
