The majority of that episode was rather underwhelming...

unfortunately I felt the same way! I hate how Moffat built up so much hype about Matt's performance and the episode in general. It really made me longing for more throughout the entire thing.
That said, it had some brilliant moments! Thank God the 50th an. episode was flawless (imo). Let's hope the writers get a well deserved rest, and come back with more brilliant ideas next year.

it's a transition episode. What were you expecting?

I feel like they should have make it longer, it felt too rushed! Also I feel that the old age thing and the cheap prosthetics, took away a lot from Matt's final performance. It felt like they only did it to prepare Clara for an older Doctor.

As someone who grew up watching the famous BBC low production value episodes starting with the 3rd Doctor, I didn't mind the prosthetics so much.

I had no issue with the prosthetics, I just wasn't happy with the regeneration, it didn't feel as, I dunno, complete maybe as some of the older ones.
It took me a while to get over the whole Gallifrey/Trenzalore part as well

They got the reboot right, though. Based upon what has already occurred, only the Council can restore generations to a Time Lord. This was established during the 4th Doctor's tenure.

I found this McGuffin to be acceptable.

Don't get me wrong I love classic Who even more than the new series. I'm not in it for the fx. I wasn't bothered from the cheap prosthetics aesthetically. I felt that by hiding his face they stole half of his performance. Matt has such an amazing range of emotions expressed through his face that by aging him so much and hiding it I felt like I was watching a different actor. I wouldn't mind if they'd done it in a different episode, but this was his last.

I feel like the writers kinda felt the same way, that's why they let young Matt play the final scene instead of the aged one (giving a very convenient excuse for it).

As for the aging thing in general, we've seen it so many times now... Tennant was old with the Master, Rory waited 2000 years so did Amy and now 11 again. After a while given that time is so relative, you stop feeling the importance of having to wait all these years waiting for your salvation (that might never come)

He almost looks like the ringmaster at a circus, all that's missing is the hat!

I like it very much, although I expected something more colourful! Still it's pretty nice, and I like the 1st doctor tone.
