Ugh, overheating, the bane of my life. It's not so bad now I use it by raising it several inches using books, leaving the vents open. Still overheats now and again though. Particularly when DVDs are playing, don't think it likes the CD drive creating the extra heat. I lost half an essay due to overheating once. I nearly threw it out of my 4th floor window.

I just remembered that my sister’s BF has a laptop that turns itself off when he tries to watch Youtube videos. Maybe a similar thing is happening. I’m aware that people tinker with their computer settings to get more CPU power than the manufacturers are prepared to risk but until JohnnyDBBUK mentioned tweaking, it didn’t occur to me that the reverse situation might solve an overheating problem.

I need to investigate this now that I know it is doable.

I don't recommend tweaking nothing unless you know what you are doing. but you can go to the BIOS and check which is the temperature set for turning off.

good luck!  :)

I’ll pass the caution on to him because I don’t want the responsibility of ruining his laptop

does the guy with youtube problems have adobe?  sometimes when a flash player updates itself it conflicts with a video player and you get the turning off.  had that problem too, couldn't watch hulu without shutting down and it turned out to be a conflict with adobe flash player, i think.  i might have the name of the program wrong, but it was a flash player conflict with windows vista.

i've been using laptops instead of desktops for about four years now because it's so damn convenient, except for the seemingly constant programming conflicts, and overheating tendencies.
I don’t think he runs much more than Microsoft word but I’ll mention it when I see him next.

But yes, Laptops are so convenient that it it's a shame there are so many problems with them. I had a Laptop that became unfit for it's intended purpose due to overuse and gradual burnout. Apparently it's a common problem if you need to have the cpu working flatout. It lasted just over a year... I think that the main conflict problem I had was firewire dropout but it was mostly doing what I wanted it too until it started to stall on certain processess.

The DVD drive needs a lot of power (from battery) to read the DVDs/CDs and the processor works more decoding their data, specially with film DVDs, so this is probably the reason your laptop overheat sometimes.

i too have a problem with overheating laptops playing sims 3.  on the sims message board, i have seen many posts from most people who have played the sims on a laptop.  i myself have to prop the laptop up on two books and run a fan under it; there is a glitch in the game and a memory leak causing this.  this is why you can run a game more involved than sims and it wont shut you off, but the sims will.  several patches later, it's better, but still a problem; i have to shut the game off every couple of hours and cool down to prevent it shutting itself off (the game not the laptop).

e.a. has known about the memory leak for like two generations of sims, and hasnt fixed it yet.  sucks to them for making such a cool game but not worrying about their software enough to allow people to play it.  i guess they figure no one actually USES a laptop.

This is really weird.  I play the Sims for hours on my lappy with it sitting on my duvet when I'm in bed.  So far no problems.
Worse things happen when watching Gilmore Girls episodes on the internet.  The leather sofa was not amused.

well, but it's gilmore girls.  my playstation refuses to play those dvd's when my stepdaughter tries.  granted, they are bootleg dvds her brother sent her from korea, but i think my playstation is just too selective to play that particular series.

obviously, the playstation is not a fan, depending on the series.  if i were a playstation, i would boycott series 5.
it's a very picky playstation.

i've never played god of war, but if it's anything like TR, i'll check it out!
it's actually not, but only reminds me of it in the vaguest way, because of the puzzles.  it's more, beat everything to death and then solve puzzles kind of action.  the closest i have played to physically being like tr is american mcgee's alice, and it's not real close, either.

Well yuh.  But see that's where the later versions are far superior, when her breasticles were no longer spikey traffic cones sticking out of her chest.

tbh. I never liked tomb raider.

I kid, it's an acquired taste.

absolutely, never again will i see another woman so terribly drawn that it's awesome.
did you ever put her in water and position the camera directly under her?  it took some moving.  or, you could get her to back up to you when she was in crawl mode.  also a favorite.
