a balanced vegetarian/vegan diet is going to contain more than enough protein. People don't have to depend on the soy bean or on other substitutes for a complete protein.

iot's more a case of people not realising what plants offer the right proteins, minerals and vitamins (also the right fats..a fat free diet is really bad for you in the longterm)   BTW Totalfrog....is she ok with unprocessed mushrooms? if not seaweeds are brilliant at providing stuff

Most food groups are sufficient in proteins even if the proteins are not quite as complete as the soy bean…  Vitamins/minerals aren’t really a problem – whole grains provide a lot of B’s & if you can’t have grains there is a chance that you can have nutritional yeast (which I think is actually a complete protein).

Seaweeds are one of my recently discovered favourite foodstuffs. Unfortunately, the stuff I’ve tried is rich in iodine and it warns of an upper limit on the packs, which is a weekly 5g-8g limit of (dried) sea-vegetable.

The only amino acid that cannot be found anywhere except red meat isn't one vital to good nutrition.

Oh, okay.

So anything that comes from an animal is considered non-vegan?

indeed...vegetarian basically means eating stuff that has not directly led to the active harm of an animal...vegan means deliberately not eating any animal products AT ALL.....anyone who claims to be vegetarian but still eats fish is an idiot....

She's fine with mushrooms. There is something in mycoprotein that can make some people ill, the fungus it is cultured from is more closely related to mold than mushrooms, I think they push the similarity to mushrooms because if they told people what it really was then no one would eat it. I had heard about the adverse reactions but I always thought they were a bit of an internet rumour until she got sick from it. And I am trying to get her to try seaweed but she doesn't like the idea of it.

any particular reason? The seaweed taste is easily hidden if sprinkled in stews, soups & curries.

She's old and doesn't like trying new things (she doesn't know that I put it in a lot of things and that she has eaten it a bunch of times). Also don't tell her I said she was old...

Well it goes a bit further than that....no products of any type which include parts of or were tested on animals.
