A few questions...
« on: September 22, 2007, 06:12:54 AM »

I have a few questions for fellow 'Boxers...

1. What was the first song you heard by the Dolls?

2. How did if affect you? (what did you think of it etc.)

3. What do you think you'd be into/where do you think you'd be if you'd never heard of the Dolls?

Just curious....

1. Can't actually remember whether it was 'Necessary Evil' or 'My Alcoholic Friends' that they played first when they were on Jools Holland's 'Later' programme a couple of years ago. I think it may have been 'Necessary Evil, but I can't be sure...

2. Absolutely loved it - I was blown away by the energy of their live performance and from that moment on, I just knew I was hooked.

3. I reckon I'd still be into the 'other' bands I like eg. Sigur Ros, The Arcade Fire etc. Life would be so much emptier though...

1) Girl Anachronism up on their myspace. They were band of the week for a month so I decided to check em out yo. And then, well you know. Now I'm here.

2) It was whack. I listened to their other ones but didn't like Bad Habit because at the time I was slow and thought it was about sewing machines.

3) If I never heard them, I'd probably be where I am now, just not knowing them.

but what about you dawling? Holmes?

1. Coin Operated Boy, when they guest programmed rage right after playing the time warp and citing the rocky horror picture show as one of their inspirations

2. I thought it was amazing. At first im like, omg these people are complete freaks, thats so awesome! And i also loved how they combined the funness of the music with the bitterness of the lyrics. Then when the bridge came i got really moved, and decided they were the perfect combination of fun, theatre and emotion. I fell in love and consumed all i could of them :)

3. Well it did get me wanting to see the rocky horror picture show again. So i went to a late show with some friends at the movies, and found out about the whol;e shadow cast thing. It was so fun i decided i wanted to join the cast when they asked if anyone wanted to. Ive been part of the cast for a while now, and made heaps of awesome friends and learned to be a lot more comfortable wearing barely more than a corsette and fishnets

1. Girl A

2. It was the only song I would listen to for a couple weeks in the car. My mom even knows the words. Sad, but that was a sign of my OCD.

3. Honestly? As sad as it is, I'd probably be dead or at least suicidal. As fucked as this sounds, the night I met them completely changed my life forever. I have something to live for now. (There's more to this than I'm going to post, but it has to do with knowing the right people now.)

1. Missed Me

2. I was listening to it on the bus on the way home from school and really didn't get into it, because I really wanted to get back to listening to CKY, which I had been listening to prior to my best friend poking me and forcing the music upon me. I thought it sounded cool, and wanted to listen to more, but didn't actually get into their music until we went to a concert of theirs a few later (October 17, 2005)

3. Well, actually, I just realized that I've been a fan for almost two years, even though it's felt like a life time. I wouldn't have met so many amazing people had I not gotten into their music, and I'm sure I'd still be stuck into my metal collection. There was a point in my life where their music really helped me get through a HORRIBLE breakup, and without the music, i don't know where I'd be. Meeting Brian also helped through a time of depression. I don't know where I'd be without him and Amanda and their lovely fans.

but what about you dawling? Holmes?
well...

1) Girl Anachronism aswell. I saw it on a cult music channel called The Amp.

2) I was bewildered by it. The energy of their video and the sheer 3 minutes of madness we call Girl A.
After that, I was completely hooked. They've changed me so much for the better.

3) I'd probably be into bands i'm still into now aka Placebo, Foo Fighters---but there would be a void.
That's what I love about the Dolls' music--it filled the gap.
It's weird, never before has a band struck home so much and had as profound an affect on me. Hell, i'm not complaining!

1) I believe it was C.O.B. that I heard first.
2) I was blown away; I had never heard anything like it.  I knew I wanted more, but couldn't find any music aside from You Tube videos (the fucking record store wasn't selling it at the time, which was I believe about six months prior to their NIN tour).  I ran to everyone I knew telling them of my dilemna, and one kid who happened to have way way way too much music on his computer agreed to burn me a copy (I also believe he liked me at the time...AWKWARD!).  I listened to it for about two months straight without anything else.
3) I dont know where I'd be, but I'm sure I'd be a different person.  The dolls hit a chord so deep in me that no other band has even come close to.  Since the release of Yes, Virginia, I've been completely bewitched.  Meeting them only sealed my love.

1. I used to wake up to Coin-Operated Boy on the radio EVERY morning, and it'd get stuck in my head. I also saw the video and was in love. I have friends that were into them too but it was before I really discovered them.

2. It's a whole new music community. I've been involved in other band's fan communities but the Dolls just represent so many different philosophies and art and just so much, it's all a very different type of expression in addition to the music.

3. I'd probably still be on other band's message boards more often, but I don't think I'd be as involved or interested in different arts and expressions.

1. i first heard backstabber, heard it on their myspace which i looked at while on a friends myspace and they were his number 1 friend...i thought it was pretty cool but didnt get to hear the whole song because i had to go to work, i forgot all about them until 2 months later, first day back at school my friend gave me a cd and said "listen to this, you'll love it and it will change your life." it was yes, virginia... i went home and listened to the whole cd and fell completely in love

2. to be honest the dolls have changed my life, im not really sure how but they've actually calmed me down...in a weird way though...i used to get extremely angry VERY easily, but something about their music changed that and made me think more, about everything which somehow helped my anger...now i think a lot more although i do still do stuff that pops into my head without thinking :p

3. if i hadnt heard them i'd still be an easily angered psycho bitch who did whatever jumped into the front of her head as soon as it the thought appeared

1. i believe i heard girl anachronism first... it was enough to make me want to hear more.

2. i thought it was great. i honestly can't think of some super, important impact.

3. i would be upset and my expansion of music knowledge/appreciation wouldn't be as great.

1.  I first heard Girl Anachronism on their purevolume.  I had heard of them first in an interivew with Gerard Way, then in an article in AP, and finally when they were touring with Panic at the Disco I decided to give them a chance.

2.  I thought it was completely weird and really didn't like it.  But I kept feeling the need to go back and listen to their songs, despite my dislike.  I find that with most of my favorite musicians/bands, I start out not liking them at all, and the same was true for the Dresden Dolls.  They eventually grew on me and now, I adore them. They're my second favorite band ever (my heart belongs first and foremost to My Chemical Romance).

3.  The Dolls opened up a whole new world to me in terms of genre.  I can say with some amount of confidence, that without the Dresden Dolls, at least 50% of the music on my computer/Ipod would not be on there. In addition to music, they have introduced me to literature, art, etc. that I wouldn't necessarily have been familiar with had I not found them.  Discovering the Dresden Dolls realy does/can alter one's life in drastic ways.

Death was just another phase and maybe a better one. You wondered if we knew each other before.  You asked me who I thought I was before.  I said maybe a fish because I love water and you said, you thought a mermaid, maybe.  If you were a mermaid, you said, if you were a mermaid, I was the sea.

1) I saw the Girl Anachronism video before I heard it, and I heard Glass Slipper first. I went to see Thursday at the local venue and they would drop a screen between bands and play silent music videos, and they played Girl Anachronism and my brother and I were like, huh, that's interesting, and I went and downloaded a whole bunch and the first song I listened to was Glass Slipper, and it really described what I was going through in that moment in time.

2) I was so intrigued... who were these people? I just felt I could relate so easily to their music, I felt a part of myself in their sound. Also, I love how Amanda is celebrated for her voice, because I did choir all through high school and the choirmaster would always praise the sopranos for their voices but never an alto (and I'm an alto). Not to mention the feminist undertones to their songs, I definitely loved that. But mostly, I love having Amanda to look up to as a POSITIVE female role model.

3) I think no matter what I would have found my way to their music... even if it happened after Amanda released her solo record, because Ben Folds is the producer and he's my first musical love. But I don't know, I don't want to think about it!

1....first song...?

2....affect you?

3...if you'd never heard of the Dolls?
1. and 2. Coin-Operated Boy.  I was channel-surfing during my morning commute (about an hour each way at the time),
and I stumbled across what I thought was an adorable novelty record on Mancow's Morning Madhouse.   I generally hate
"morning radio shows", but was intrigued by the song.  The nice folks at Google provided me with the name and website
of the band, and as luck would have it, the Dolls played a show nearby about a week later.

3. I'd never have met ("for real" or on-line) a whole bunch of truly remarkable people, many of whom I count as friends
today.  Ironically, a number of those people were at that first show, but I didn't actually make their acquaintance until
some months later. Perhaps even more ironic, a lovely young lady in frilly black and white asked if I wanted to dance...
It was so nice, and so completely random, and it made my whole night (as if it required anything more to make it great, and
even though I don't dance)
, and I still have no idea who she was.
(It wasn't Brittany; that was my first thought.)

1) I think it was Good Day, but I'm not sure... I know it was on that album at least. My brother is the one who got me into the dolls, and he initially gave me that album to "try out" so to speak.

2) It was a while ago, so I can't remember exactly, but soon afterwards I was completely hooked on it. I'd listen to it on repeat all the time (the entire album, not just that track), even in school if I could. It was kind of obsessive. I dropped a lot of bands that I used to listen to, realizing that they were actually pretty terrible in comparison (and I still don't regret dropping them in the least) and picked up on some new bands in similar styles (Humanwine is the first that comes to mind).

3) Well I don't know how it'd affect me as a person or anything, but I'd probably still be into the whole "anime" art style instead of... well, whatever you'd call it now.

interesting thing i need to point out which sort of goes with my response to number three but i don't feel like editing:

I am now an avid Neutral Milk Hotel fan due to the dolls (covers of Two Headed Boy and Brian's Oh, Comely).  Interestingly enough, I have a random memory of some girl playing a cover of "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" on the street a few years ago.  So strange that it just clicked, "I've heard this before..." and remembered that.

The Dolls introduced me to NMH too, and HUMANWINE.
it's a completely different end of the musical spectrum, and i love it.
