all mouth piercings affect your mouth. the 'studs' (labret rings) will migrate into your lip or cause an indentation on your gum, a ring can actually move teeth and cause scratching and gapping, and a tongue ring can do the same, plus break teeth. plus anything IN the mouth collects plaque and bacteria and should be cleaned and changed out regularly let me say that again, CLEAN YOUR TONGUE RINGS, so that your piercist doesn't have to break the plaque seal and do it for you. they hate doing it, it smells terrible, and we talk about your filthy ass when you leave.
the secret to any piercing is clean it. clean it twice a day, more when it is weepy or migrating, and then clean it again when you randomly think about it. if the ring has any smudge or matter on it, it is breeding zillions of bacteria with every breath you take.
and please wash your hands if you smoke. nicotine is a bacteria, basically.
