I just wanted to post here and maybe get some feedback as to whether there is any restrictions on photography at any of the upcoming Dolls shows.  I've had very little luck getting straight answers from venues in the past (the last NYE Dolls show, the venue told me no, and then later emails me while I am on line at the venue waiting to get in, camera-less, that they were wrong, and it was indeed allowed).  I know this tends to be a very artistically open environment, and the community itself is full of performers and artists and musicians all sharing their talent... but I find it logical to make sure I don't end up getting hassled at the door to the venue by security who doesn't want to let me in with my dSLR.

I am attending the Halloween show in NYC and flying out for NYE in San Fran.  I've had the pleasure of taking photos at many AFP solo gigs, but never gotten to shoot a Dolls show and it would mean a lot to me.

If there is someone I should contact, or can talk to, please let me know!

The Dolls themselves have always been pretty photog-friendly, but some venues... not so much.
Make sure you get an answer from both....

if the venue saids NO,
go to the merch table and ask

if the merch-gal-de-jour isn't sure,
ask to speak with one of amanda's assistants

i've been at shows,
where some of the venue staff
were not briefed about the d.dolls
taping is EXCELLENT policy,
and amanda's people got it all straightened out
policy, and

Sadly some venues are cracking down and aren't letting the band set the policy.  Point and shoot cameras are almost always okay; professional removable-lens cameras sometimes aren't.  I know for sure that the NYC show will be completely open photo, although we hope everyone will be respectful and not interfere with the enjoyment of those around them by shooting excessively or shooting frequently with flash.

The place you'll usually get stopped with pro gear is at the door.  Ask the box office person if they know that the band's policy is to have no photo restrictions.  If they say they didn't know that, ask them to confirm it with the Tour Manager.  If they say "Well, it's our venue and we make the rules" then you are probably out of luck.

If someone stops you from taking photos during the show, be polite and put your camera away.  If you see someone who is clearly with the band and is not currently busy, feel free to tell them what happened and see if they can help you.  The old tradition of ask the merch girl came around in part because I WAS the merch girl and also handled photo passes, but since I'm not on this tour, the TM is really the person you'll need to speak to.

There's just one assistant, the awesome Superkate.  Unless you know something I don't, Len? ;)

let me re-phase that  ; - }

ask to speak with one of the d.dolls assistants

or better yet

ask to speak with one of the d.dolls tour staff

but now i would say

ask to speak with d.dolls tour manager

for those of you who have missed the memo,
amanda has changed beth's official role over to
handle the design of and everything merch.

though my experience of team chaos
is that everyone can pinch hit for everyone else.
they really are a gangofalltrades

i've seen superkate, amanda's new personal assistant, in action.
also had a chance to chat with her in one of those rare idle moments.
like the rest of team chaos,
she is awesome and cool in her own special way

Thanks for all the info thus far.  I appreciate it.  Somehow despite having taken many epic photos over the years I haven't made enough connections, perhaps, so I find it difficult to know who to contact.  I'm a big advocate for artists helping each other and supporting each other, and I never seek to make money off my photos taken at shows (if someone wanted to pay me that's a different story), but obviously we are inundated with photographers/videographers so it's not logical to think that everyone requesting a photo pass is going to get one.

This just means a lot to me because I'm dealing with a lot of other paid photography work that's eating up my time and focus so I can't shoot shows as often, and I love the Dresden Dolls and all the wonderful musicians and artists that they've introduced me to via supporting acts.  Many of those supporting artists have actually been part of what kept me motivated to keep shooting shows due to their very positive response (including some of those performers asking me to come shoot them specifically at non DD/AFP gigs).  With such an artistically driven community it's difficult to keep everyone happy so I try to just go with the flow.  However, if I don't try hard enough to get permission to shoot a show, then I have no one to blame but myself for not putting in the effort!

Despite having some less than good news regarding the venue (someone sent me a message saying The Warfield is very no-photography), I won't give up without a healthy effort!  I am, after all, flying across the country to see a show... I figure I might as well put my skills and talent to good use documenting what will no doubt be a fantastic night.

Thanks again.

On twitter, I saw Beth say the venue is clueless and to ask for the tour manager if they give you trouble about your camera. It's supposed to be open photo policy.
