FLYER TUTORIAL - Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under 2011 Tour
« Reply #1 on: January 27, 2011, 11:45:59 PM »

Here you will find a resources and instructions on how to get started in creating and posting flyers and promotional stencils as well as tips on how you can use your online social networks to help spread the word of the Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under Tour.

You are more than welcome to use the image resources available on our Street Team Resources Flickr album to create your own promotional flyer, stencil, banner etc. but we have also provided ready-made Tour flyers for you that are ready to be printed and copied for immediate posting.

COMPLETED FLYERS:

Use these general Down Under Tour flyers! Post them up in locations across town and use a sharpie on the bottom of the paper to write in the date and venue of your city's tour stop, then make photo copies as needed! You can also download the image and write in the date through Photoshop (or your favorite image editing software) so it's all set to go before you print it.

Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under Tour Flyers - good for ANY tour date in Oz or NZ

(Quartersheet / Handbill - prints 4 to a page)

Print a bunch of flyers at a time. Take a sharpie and fill in the relevant info - the date of the concert and the venue it is held at.

HOW and WHERE TO POST FLYERS

It's very important that you post flyers in the right places - not only in trafficked places so they will be seen, but it is also important that you do not break any laws, upset shop owners or litter. Keep in mind the target audience that you want to see your flyer are potential AFP fans or casual fans that are unaware AFP has a tour stop in your town; this means that you'll have to use some common sense as to where to hang up a flyer. For instance, if your university/college campus has a bulletin board for off-campus events that's a good spot to put a flyer. If your local church has a bulletin board for church news that's probably not the best place to put it.

Examples of where to post flyers include:
College campuses, CD shops & music stores, cafes, skate shops, theater production houses, bulletin boards inside independent or college radio stations, in the break room at your job, on public bulletins, a mall or shopping center, at the pub down the street from the concert hall etc.

General rule of thumb is to ASK a business/shop BEFORE you post or leave anything on their property. Most small cafes have bulletin boards that they open to the public for announcements - look for places like that instead of pasting a flyer on a blank wall.

TIP
Print ONE flyer out and leave it on your car's dashboard (or place it on your rear windshield of your car) - post it somewhere that many people will see it!

Quarter Sheets/Handbillss:
When you print a flyer so that the images appears 4 times on 1 sheet of paper (or in quadrants) it's called a quarter sheet (get it?). These are preferable to full-sized flyers only when you are passing them out directly to people, as the font is generally too small to be noticed when it's hanging on a wall.

-Use quarter sheets only if you intend to pass them out to a person after a concert, on line at an event etc.
-Make sure you pick up any left over or discarded quarter sheets so you are not littering.
-Ask shops/cafes for permission to leave a stack on a table or at the register counter

CREATE YOUR OWN FLYER
Use this thread to post your fan-made flyers, share them here so other people put them to use!

Requirements/Tips:
-The images should be sized so that they can be printed on a standard sheet of computer paper
-Use of color in your design is great, but it's preferable for designs to be readable if printed in black and white
-Leave specific concert/venue information blank so that the flyer can be used for any/all stops of the tour
---alternately, you can include show specific information and post the different versions for each city to use
-Make sure all information on the flyer is accurate and spelled correctly, use the info on AFP's events page to get show specific information (including - show time, venue name, city and support bands)

Don't be afraid to make or draw a flyer by hand and then photocopy or scan the original to print out copies. Be creative and go wild!

STENCIL TUTORIAL - Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under 2011 Tour
« Reply #2 on: January 27, 2011, 11:47:36 PM »

STENCIL TUTORIAL

Below is info on how you can make your very own "WE ARE THE MEDIA" stencil! Follow the instructions below and hit the streets to creatively spread the word that Amanda Palmer is coming to town! Please post pictures of your work here and feel free to offer advice on making the stencil and sharing tips on the best places to apply it!

BE CREATIVE and HAVE FUN!

Download the official "We Are The Media" stencil by clicking the image below:

(click either image below to enlarge)
///

The image links to a Flickr page where you will be able to choose different size options of the image to print - we recommend using the largest if you're printing one stencil per page.

From here you can print this as a Stencil or as a Flyer to post around - directions on how to use both are below!

DIRECTIONS to MAKE a STENCIL:
  • Print out the stencil
  • Apply the print out paper on surface that will make a good stencil (oak tag, thick paper, stencil paper etc.)
  • Wait for the adhesive to dry and then use an Xacto knife to cut out the stencil
  • decide to chop out the white or black portions of the image (it's a bit intricate so you can leave some details out - additionally you can create a second stencil to layer on top of the first one)
  • Free hand the show city/date that the tour is hitting your town (you can also make an additional stencil with just the show info)
  • Now you're ready to get to work applying the stencil!

TIPS TO APPLY THE STENCIL:
You can use different materials to cut the stencil out of -ie: oak tag, plastic, contact paper, etc. my personal recommendation is to use oak tag poster board. Apply the printed paper to the stencil material with glue, tape or spray adhesive. Don't apply too much adhesive as you'll be cutting out the stencil and too much glue can be nuisance and wasteful.

You can decide to cut out the white areas only or the black areas only - it depends on your skill level and plan for the stencil.
If you're a beginner I recommend making a stencil of the text only and freehand the monitor.

You can use a number of different art supplies to apply the stencil to surfaces, be creative! What type of paint or material you use can vary on the surface you apply the stencil to. For example, you can bust out your spray paint, fabric paint, glitter, sharpie marker or chalk.

I suggest you write "Amanda Palmer" out somewhere near or on your finished stencil - so people know what they're looking at.

Make sure that you include the tour date next to the stencil to help spread news of that the tour is hitting your town!

ONLINE/SOCIAL MEDIA PROMO TUTORIAL - Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under 2011 Tour
« Reply #3 on: January 27, 2011, 11:49:27 PM »

Just by posting a status update or linking a venue's ticket page to an upcoming show you can let your friends know that Amanda's down under and help them discover the fun of a live AFP show.

Follow the directions below and feel free to share your tips and progress!

ONLINE/INTERNET Street Team Promotion:

Here's tools to use to help promote Amanda's tour online:

+Tips How to Promote the Show online even if you are not attending a show
Even if a show isn't at a city near you, you can still help to let people know it's happening! If you have friends that live in or near any of the cities that the upcoming Amanda Palmer Down Under tour is hitting - tell them about the show! You can still use your social networking websites, message board avatars/signatures and personal blogs - for example - to let people know AFP is playing in Oz and NZ.

-Example 1: Select "I'm going" and share the concert posting with your Facebook friends and post it to your newsfeed. If you are on Facebook RSVP to the show event page and share the event link (find show specific event links here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/amandapalmer?v=app_2344061033 )
-Example 2 Spread the link to buy tickets to the show online: (show specific ticket links are here: http://amandapalmer.net/afp/events)
-Example 3: If you use Myspace post a bulletin about the tour. You can post one every day or every few days.
-Example 4: Spread your excitement around in your blog, Instant Messaging profiles, and other internet signatures.

These are examples of ways to utilize social networking services that you already use to help spread the word of this tour. There are many ways to promote AFP  and your local show that involve you actively going out there and extending beyond your own network but a great place to start is by using the resources you already have.

FACEBOOK:
-attend the event for Amanda's show and share the link on your newsfeed (find your local show here http://www.facebook.com/#!/amandapalmer?v=app_2344061033 )
-share the event on your facebook newsfeed to tell your friends, or share it on your friend's walls.
-share the link to Amanda's tour page or upload a show-specific flyer it as a default profile photo
-update your facebook status to tell your friends about the show, to link the FB event, or to link to a flyer

MYSPACE:
-post the banner image in the comments page of your friends, or group pages
-updated your myspace status to tell your friends about the show
-change your default picture to the banner

TWITTER:
-Tweet the Facebook event URL or details about the show (you can use http://bit.ly to shorten long links)
-Including a hash tag #AFPdownunder or abbreviate your city name: #AFPsyd or #AFPmelb for all your twitter posts about the tour so we can see your work
Tip - also use a city specific tag like #Melbourne so that people searching for events in your city can find your post about AFP!
