Recording a Show
« on: October 31, 2007, 11:18:58 PM »

Hey everyone. I was just looking to hear opinions on the best way to record a show. I went to my verrry first show ever, Sxip's Hour of Charm, and got a really nice recording on DVD, but since my main purpose is ripping the audio from it, I'm looking for something to get me a bit better quality. So are there any suggestions on which methods and equipment are the best? Also, I don't have like, a LOT of money. I'm willing to spend about $100, maybe? Or am I just looking for a deal I won't find?

Yep. $100 won't cut it, at least if you want a decent recording. I'd say it'd run you ~$600-700. You need mics (~$200+ for decent ones), a recorder (~$300-350 for a decent memory-based one, last I checked), and recordable media (~$75-100 for a good 4 GB card, allowing for easy 24-bit 96 kHz recording). You can get some stuff used but I doubt you'd come in at $100. Don't bother with DAT decks. DAT is obsolete and there probably aren't many functioning portable decks left anymore. (That said, I miss my trusty M1. *sniff*)

Good luck.

Ah, okay. Thank you very much for the info. I don't mind using my camera again; I was very pleased with how the mp3s turned out. And at the same time, it was a small place, and it was only Amanda and the Kurzweil.  There is no way I can spend over $100 right now, so I'll just hope someone else tapes. If anyone was wondering, its the 12/29 Orpheum show I'm going to. I can not wait, hope to see everyone there.

Fuck. Does anyone know if its going to be a problem getting recording stuff into the Orpheum? I'm really not a professional so I don't see myself being put on any special lists, but I would really love to record because I would share, and my mp3s were fine, and I would be sad if my stuff got confiscated at the door.

I answered the rest of this elsewhere. Just so you know, though, the staff can't confiscate your goods. At most, they can turn you away, or take your tape if you're caught on the inside. (Just trick them and give them a spare tape.) I suppose they can make you delete files on solid-state recorders and such but it's nothing a little data recovery software can't fix.  :brave:

...data recovery software?

Ja.

beyond that
google "data recovery software"

there are also companies/services that do this
they often have software and hardware they've developed themselves
e.g.  deal with getting data off a hard drive that had a head crash

diy with data recovery software is much cheaper

I plan on audio taping the Orpheum show.  Church Audio STC-11 > CA ST-9000 > Edirol R-09 (24/48).

My problem now is my seats are a bit too nice - 3rd row.  Not the best taping location.  I have others with me (the reason we are going to the show and the reason I didn't try for different seats) so trading is an issue as I know they don't want different seats.  Oh well, a tough issue to deal with, I know.  :)

So yes sorry for the extra topic i just removed it, i was thinking in asking for the guy behind the console to let me plug my laptop, it might not be a problem to get the chance to do this because a friend of mine is organizing the show but will i get a really shitty sound or something decent?

I'd say your friend organizing the gig has little to do with getting a soundboard feed.  The sound engineer has a single job - to make sure the house sound is good.  Helping you get a feed to your laptop is not part of that job.  Also, depending on the venue, the board mix may be less than ideal - as you will be getting the PA mix which isn't necessarily what you hear while sitting/standing at the venue.  Many artists that are taper friendly prohibit sbd recordings as they simply sound awful.  My $0.02, YMMV and probably does.

I guess i will have to take my handycam and leave it infront of the stage so then i could rip the audio what actually means really really poor sound quality.

You're kidding about soundboard quality being bad, right? Every time that I've read about various live recordings, soundboard quality is the most sought after, and guess what? There's a good reason for it, and that reason is that unless the soundboard sucks, you'll be getting a direct feed from the instruments, and unless the sound tech sucks, the music will sound like it should. You won't get the odd fan standing next to your mic, shouting, "Yeah! (Insert band name here) rocks hardcore!" I can say from my experience as a college DJ that I preferred the soundboard recordings of my shows to those made with the tape recorder that I had handy.

You have taken what I said out of context.  Go back and read what I said.  The quality of the recording is great, but the mix may be off. I have listened to thousands of audience recordings of live performances.  Any taper worth his salt would take a sbd recording to do a matrix with his own audience recording.  Please don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.  A DJ mix is a lot different than a band playing on stage with their own amps and drum kit in addition to the house PA.  YMMV and apparently does.
