Awesome.

I just wanted to mention this here, in case anyone can help. I posted it in Questions as well.

Fuck. Does anyone know if its going to be a problem getting recording stuff into the Orpheum? I'm really not a professional so I don't see myself being put on any special lists, but I would really love to record because I would share, and my mp3s were fine, and I would be sad if my stuff got confiscated at the door.

I hear the staff at the Orpheum can be dicks sometimes. I think audio will be okay, although you might have to ask to speak to Katie Kay (the manager) or Laura (merch girl). For video, I think you'll need to get in touch with Johnny (Uglyboy 'round these here parts) beforehand. The band does like to keep tabs on who's taping, especially if it's video.

Oh, and I'll probably be there. Wu-Tang!

Ah, okay. Thanks very much. I have a DVD of Sxip's Hour of Charm on, I think, the 24th that I'll send in then. The mp3s were already posted though, and i can not get the DVD to play on a regular player.

Again, a possible here -- I'm either NYC or Boston, or both, if I can scrounge up moola.

I'm drifting towards Boston because it'll be much easier, but I really want to see a New Year's show.

Are you sure? It might just be your player doesn't like the particular brand of DVD that you're using. If not, you can "demux" the audio & video, then use another program to "author" a new DVD. (This assumes, of course, that you have the technical know-how to do such things.)

Ah, okay, thanks for the suggestion. I think its just that specific DVD, though, because even on my computer it has trouble. Ha ha, it was my first time really using that recorder, and I fucked up a number of times, most notably when  I finalized it on a low battery and had it die during the process.

So, pretty decisively.  I will be there.  In Boston.

See you there, An Arm is Off and the rest -- although I may be hidden somewhere...

Oh, and Amanda Palmer is coming to this show?  That makes it even better! *grin*

Head over HERE to get info on all of the shows, and grab pre-sale tickets before they're gone!

Boston, New York City, and Chicago pre-sales have already sold out, but will be onsale via Ticketmaster as follows:
Boston - On-sale Saturday, November 10th at 10:00 AM HERE
New York - On-sale Friday, November 9th at 10:00 AM HERE
Chicago - On-sale soon - additional info TBA!

For those of you who aren't already members, The Shadowbox is the official DD forum and is a great place to discuss the upcoming shows, meet other people from your area who will be attending, and chat it up with Dolls fans, like yourself.

kay, got 'em!

question: does any one know who i should contact about photographing the show? i know the dolls tend to be pretty lenient with this type of stuff, but would i need permission to roam around the theater taking pictures?

I think photography, and hopefully audio recording, are nothing to worry about.

I missed out on the presales due to meetings, and thought the regular sales were Wednesday for some reason.  Thank all the small gods I stopped in today and read this thread!  I now have my tickets...thanks!

Me.   and my imagination. and the ghosts in my head. and my love of Amanda and my amazement in Brian and the upsides in my mind and the downsides  stuck in the grooves of my shoes. and all my happiness and and all my bitter chirstmas spirit. and all my desperation for the always advancing new years.  I'll be there in so many ways. all squished in to one of those toddler sized Orpheum seats. It shall be swell. Hopefully I won't swell or I'll never fit. right now I feel like I'm the perfect fit. am I still typing. I guess I am...are you still reading?  I guess you are.

and 5 yet to be determined other humans will be accompanied by me and my head.

What is a good inexpensive, reasonable quality, simply recording device for a dd show?  I'm not a recorder per say, but I'd love to introduce the live music to some friends that have not been yet.

Me! Oh, and my entire fricking family again. My Dad actually bought the tickets, lol.. he's awesome.
So it will be Me, HOPEFULLY the hubby, but there is potential for him to have a gig of his own, so I don't know (He's Soapdish FYI), and my parents...this will be their THIRD Dolls show. I've created a couple o' monsters! I'm very excited, but I haven't a clue what to where. I refuse to let the presence of my parents hinder any potential costuming.... it's just my brain that hinders that. Yay!

We are SO there again! Me, the Misses, and the kiddies (okay - they're 13 and 15 - no longer kiddies). Just bought my tix - I wish I had known about the pre-sale. They kicked ass last year in April at the Orpheum with Humanwine - I can't wait for December!

Have people who ordered tickets (through Baseline ticketing -- not Ticketmaster)  for the Orpheum show already recieved them?  I tried emailing their help thingie to ask about this with no answer -- I know there's still like a month left, but I'm impatient, and... I did have to pay 2 day shipping....

I haven't gotten mine either, but I believe there was only one shipping option which was 2-day shipping. Which means you get it 2 days after its shipped.

Part of the problem is that my husband and my parents are coming...don't get me wrong, all are awesome, and enjoy the Dolls, but the hubby is BOUND to cramp my style... I mean that literally. He's a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy, and I'm thinking more heals and dress-up. Sigh. The up-side is I can probably funk up my mom, which is always good for a laugh if nothing else. This will be my parent's THIRD Dolls show. They rock.

I can't wait.
I'm disputing what to wear though, I'm thinking my white dress (ooh a reason to shave my legs, neat) with black hi-tops maybe my VU t-shirt over it, my brown jacket, my beloved orange and green headband, and maybe rose vine make-up. Hmm, in writing that sounds uber clashy but it isn't.

Yeah, I have this great garnet red corset top that I might wear...will probably wear. The shoes are problematic, since there is BOUND to be snow. I DO have some great platform boots, but they are a bit "goth-girl", which while not entirely inappropriate is not my regular "style" ... then again this IS an occasion to play dress-up, so perhaps a little "poser" get up isn't all bad...hmmmm... I'm putting WAY too much thought into this.

Sounds like the best way to attend anywhere, especially a Dolls show.

So I apologize in advance to the person sitting behind me at this concert, because I just discovered in my body the fierce need to dance and mime out songs.

It's not pretty.

Exactly what I was thinking!  I asked on the brigade section and didn't even think to ask here.   :D

I can barely contain myself.

My first time experiencing the Brigade.  I can't see whatever it is you came up with, babe.  (And everyone else.)

I can't wait to see you again, my dear!

^Has anyone determined a dinner location in Chinatown? My dad wants to go Grand Chau Chow on Beech St, so if folks haven't decided where to go, we are always game for company...don't be afraid, my parent's are actually a lot of fun, and used to my weirdo friends :)
I've been there before, and it's pretty good, and a nice open location, so the people coming and going would be cool. We are thinking we'll be there around 5:30ish.

Here's the address:

Grand Chau Chow Restaurant
45 Beech St (Cross is Tyler)
Boston, MA
(617) 292-5166
http://www.menupix.com/boston/restaurants.php?id=480

Would love to see some people there!
:)

All Chinatown is awesome for group dinners. I saw we meet at the T and then let people who care pick the place.

Chinatown dinner sounds great, too, if it comes together in time for us to adjust sitter expectations and the like.

I am beside myself with excitement!

Ah, I know this is freaking short notice but I still have an extra balcony ticket I have been trying to give away.  Who would have thought it would be so hard to get rid of a free concert ticket?  I'd rather give it to a real dolls fan than sell it to a parasitic scalper.

It's a balcony seat, row Q.  But then, it's free.  So that makes up for it.

Please write to me, I want to give this to someone who deserves it!

Here's a (fragmented) setlist from memory. Its probably missing some stuff.

The Wall
Girl A
Missed Me
Gravity
Ultima Esperanza
Coin-Operated Boy
the Gardener (OMG)
Two-Headed Boy
Mrs. O
Mandy Goes to Med School
Fight for your Right
Mein Herr
Boston
Sweet Dreams

I have recordings of Ultima and the Gardener...but they're a bit fucked up. I'm going to see fi I can try to fix them. If not, I'll upload them as they are, but they're...I dunno.

This was awesome.

We were close enough that my friends and I may have caught Amanda's cold (Just kidding, one was probably sick beforehand and my voice is gone from singing in car/screaming during the show/lack of sleep...).  My only issue was that it was killing me to stay seated, but I didn't want to be the asshole who stood up and blocked the view of all the rows behind me.  I was dancing and singing in my seat like crazy though -- crazy enough that one of my friends may have threatened to disown me.  But I enjoyed myself very much.

I put a few pictures here: http://s214.photobucket.com/albums/cc282/Musings_album/Orpheum%20Theatre/?albumview=slideshow

I tried to get all artsy with a few, but the originals should be in there as well so you can see what things looked like before I fucked with them.  There are also photos where I just fucked up and they are blurry as hell because my camera can't handle long distances and flash.

Also: I am trying to bring back the leg chop dance move for Ultima Esperanza.

So between pacofish, vanark and emorency, there should be at least a few good recordings out there!  What was everyone using for format?  I thought about bringing my DAT recorder, but that just seems so out of date these days and I haven't been able to convince myself to spring for a fostex FR2-LE.

And hey woj, that's a great avatar icon!  What will the CIA think of next, eh?  Were you the one with the two mics attached to the railing at the very front of the boxes?

'twas the case. i was originally smack-dab in front of the house left stack, but everyone seated there was moved up to the boxes as the theatre wasn't supposed to sell those seats due to the obstructed view. wheeeeeeeee! that's actually a pretty decent spot -- perfect bird's eye view of the keyboard and practically straight-on look at kit. and being able to mount the mics makes life a whole lot easier as well...

ok, time for brunch.

What was everyone using for format?  I thought about bringing my DAT recorder, but that just seems so out of date these days and I haven't been able to convince myself to spring for a fostex FR2-LE.

DAT is still a viable format.  The main advantage that the digital solid state or hard drive format recorders have is in the transfer.  Instead of having to transfer at real time to the computer, I can hook up a USB cable and have it transferred in minutes and start mastering.

I was running Church Audio cardioids > Church preamp > Edirol R-09.

Here are my photos.  Not many brigade photos due to me statuing, but I was about... 5-10 rows back so I got some AMAZING shots of the Dolls.  They're in reverse order.. I can't figure out why my photobucket hates me today.  Anything taken before the Dolls went on was taken by my friend Felicia, anything after is from me.  No opening acts due to... Everything bad going wrong at once?  Yeah, that sounds about right.

And thank you thank you thank you Lentower for the lovely gift... I wanted to hug you for it, but I thought it'd break character, then couldn't find you after the show!

Here's a (fragmented) setlist from memory. Its probably missing some stuff.

The Wall
Girl A
Missed Me
Gravity
Ultima Esperanza
Coin-Operated Boy
the Gardener (OMG)
Two-Headed Boy
Mrs. O
Mandy Goes to Med School
Fight for your Right
Mein Herr
Boston
Sweet Dreams

I have recordings of Ultima and the Gardener...but they're a bit fucked up. I'm going to see fi I can try to fix them. If not, I'll upload them as they are, but they're...I dunno.

Oh, and a sign that I can forsee the future of the Dolls: as my friends and I were driving homeward, we were stuck behind the "Famous Party Trolley of Boston", music, drunken people, disco ball and lights and all.

Imagine it.  A DD Party Trolley.  Even a DD Party Volvo.

I believe this is the correct order for the set list (thanks to An Arm Is Off for the head start):

Disc 1

[intro]
The Wall
Girl Anachronism
Missed Me
Gravity
[band chatter]
Ultima Esperanza
[band chatter]
Coin-Operated Boy
Mrs. O
[band chatter]
The Gardener
[band chatter]
Two-Headed Boy
[performance by Lexington High Drama team to the song The Fool]

Disc 2

Mein Herr
[band chatter]
Fight For Your Right*
[band chatter]
Mandy Goes To Med School#
[band chatter]
Boston
[encore break]
Sweet Dreams^

* with Sxip Shirey from Luminescent Orchestrii, Amanda on drums, Brian on electric guitar
# with Lance Horne, keyboard player from Meow Meow
^ with members of Luminescent Orchestrii

I'm just tracking the Meow Meow and Luminescent Orchestrii and then it will be ready to go.  Where do DD shows usually get torrented?  bt.etree.org, dimeadozen.org?  Who has a preference?

I like etree, not because I don't have a DimeaDozen account, but because torrents refuse to download from there for me. x_X I'm sure many people don't have DAD accounts though, but etree is open to all.

EDIT: Also, the title of the song the LHS Drama team performed to is "The Fool", not "The Fool 1945." That was my fault, sorry for the miscommunication.

Because it was a really unexpected, sweet gesture that merits a hug.  *Nod*

I was trying to give the vegans strawberries.. Though for some reason people were convinced I had bacon.. I'll never understand that mixup.

i'm new at this torrent stuff...is it supposed to take hours upon hours to download? cause that's what it's doing. why not just mp3's -_-

If its okay with vanark, I'll convert to mp3s and upload zips of it. But it's really up to him; typically, you should just download it however the taper uploaded it and be thankful he uploaded it at all. It takes like 10 minutes to convert the files anyway.

And yes, it will take hours depending on the number of people downloading.

Oh, and not mp3s because mp3 is a lossy format. FLAC is lossless.

Hey all - what time did everyone hit the stage?  (Openers, etc.) compared to when the doors opened?  I'm making plans right now for a show and planning around work.

On another note, how awesome was the set?!  I am so jealous!!!  You were shown some serious love!

it varies from venue to venue
best to be there near show time,
if you wany to see the openers

some shows have local openers,
which usually take 5 to 15 mins each
they are seldom announced before the show

openers on the bill roughly start an hour apart
but that can vary

so far on this winter tour,
a+b sets have been an hour or more
depending on venue, schedule, their health, etc

best to ask on that show's thread, or start one

02. The Wall

Thanks for taping! One minor correction: this track is definitely "In the Flesh?". I'll try to nail down the Lumi setlist one way or another when I get my head together.

The reason I don't seed my shows in mp3 is because they loose a *LOT* of quality that way.  You can hear the difference when listening to mp3's vs. the lossless WAV files (or FLAC which is the same quality).  The fact of the matter is the show was recorded at 24 bit/48kHz which is even greater quality than CD-Audio (16 bit/44.1kHz) which is what these files are.  I understand the portability of mp3 files and I have an iPod jammed full of them, but I also have the lossless source files for those situations where I want to listen to them at better quality.

I try to explain it this way.  You have 2 piles of money, 10 bills each.  One is a pile of $1 bills, the other is $10 bills.  Which pile do you want?  I know which one I want, but by choosing mp3's, you are choosing the pile of $1 bills.  You can always get 10 $1 bills from the pile of $10 bills, but not vice versa.

I know people are going to convert them to mp3's and share them.  I can't stop you so I don't even try nor do I get bothered by it.  Just don't burn them as CD's and convert them back to mp3's - that is like a double whammy.

Enjoy.

would i be able to put it on my ipod or only listen to it through the computer?

Once you download it, you can convert the FLAC files to WAV or AIFF (lossless audio files) and them import them into iTunes and convert them to whatever bit rate you desire.

The whole "The Wall" problem was also my fault; I (am ashamed to say that I) have not listened to Pink Floyd, and was going off of what my mom told me. Sorry for the confusion.

It depends on your transfer rate.
If you're on a dial-up connection, 3 days isn't unthinkable.

For a Mac, you want to use xACT to convert it to AIFF and then once in iTunes, you can convert the AIFF to whatever lossy bitrate you want (Convert to mp3 option).

For Windows, I recommend a tool called Traders Little Helper - http://tlh.easytree.org/ .  Same thing - convert to WAV, import into iTunes and then you can convert to mp3.

Oooh, good point. Haven't listened to that album in awhile. I'm pretty sure you're right. I can't listen right now but I remember there being quite a few more lyrics. Brian did a verse, then Amanda, then they joined together??? Oh well.

Oh, and mucho thanks to the FLAC posting. FLACs are always appreciated. (Eric, if you're out there, I can host your recording.)

Hi everyone. This is my first post here. Thanks so much for uploading the show, vanark. I was there, and it was amazing.

I was just wondering if anyone has a pic of Amanda in the encore, when she put the mic in her pants. That was so cute.

thanks again.

for those who download the flacs, i recommend burning them to cd-r AS FLAC FILES for posterity. that way, if you ever want to listen to the show, you just put the cd-r in your drive and play them with you favorite media player. and, if you need to, you can convert the flacs on the cd-r to wav/aiff on your hard drive and burn to an audio cd-r for yourself or someone else. and, of course, you can always convert those flacs to mp3 as needed.

there's no reason you have to keep flacs on your hard drive -- particularly if you do not have the space -- but there are good reasons to hang onto them in on some other media even if you don't have the hard drive space to keep them indefinitely on your computer.

hey vanark -- can you post a mp3 clip of your recording? i am going to download it but i need to make some room on the hard drive before i get to that. however, i am curious how those church audio mics sound ... a 45-60 segment of any song would do the trick. thanks!

Did you try turning off your modem for 30 seconds? Believe it or not, that could solve all of your problems. Sometimes, my internet gets painfully slow for seemingly no reason. I once went over a month with deathly slow everything, despite the fact that tech support told me to just turn it off and on again. I thought it was to simple, so I never did. Then one day I cracked, did it, and life was sexy again.

What bit torrent software are you using?  Do you regularly use bit torrent?

You can try setting your upload speed to be about 5-10 kB/s less than your maximum upload speed.  Sometimes you can strangle your connection if  you are uploading or downloading at the max speed.

i'm using

[invented by Bram Cohen]

and no. i have no idea what i'm doing.
but i did just turn the downloading speed down.
it's down to 1 day 19 hours .. and it's skipping hours so i think it's good now.

thanks on everyone for help, by the way. it's appreciated.

I asked my computer nerd husband which bit torrent client he thought I should use and he recommended a Canadian shareware called Acquisition.  It was a $26 license fee, but as shareware, it all goes the the developers, which those computer nerdly types all seem to like.  It interfaces directly with Mac iTunes, so I don't need to then find another software to convert it.  It may mean I won't be able to burn a full high-quality dvd, though; I can't tell yet.  It's saying the download will take around 4 hours.

And more thanks to vanark!

15. [performance by Lexington High Drama team to the song The Fool]

Neutral Milk Hotel, correct? I haven't downloaded the FLACs yet and can't check yet. I'm just curious.

so i started downloading about 2 nights ago.. and it still says 3 days left to go.. .

help me?

What kind of connection do you have?  Dial-up?  What other kind of things do you have going on with your computer?

i'm dsl-ing it. i don't have much memory left on my computer. [aroung less than 20 gb] which is bad. everything internet-related is slowing down considerably. . .. it's down to 2 days now. ..
i'm on a mac. it's not ridiculously old. .
the first time i tried to download it it said it would take 3, then 4, then 10 days, so i stopped it and started over again. if that tells you anything.

What bit torrent software are you using?  Do you regularly use bit torrent?

You can try setting your upload speed to be about 5-10 kB/s less than your maximum upload speed.  Sometimes you can strangle your connection if  you are uploading or downloading at the max speed.

i'm using
BitTorrent Version 4.27.2
[invented by Bram Cohen]

and no. i have no idea what i'm doing.
but i did just turn the downloading speed down.
it's down to 1 day 19 hours .. and it's skipping hours so i think it's good now.

thanks on everyone for help, by the way. it's appreciated.

If you're using a router, you HAVE to make sure your ports are forwarded properly, or you will spend weeks dl'ing shit. Dunno how to, just msg me.

In a large swarm, this simply isn't true.  You will be able to connect to enough non-firewalled peers that your speeds will be fine.  If there is a small number of peers, yes, forwarding your BT port so you aren't firewalled will allow you to maximize your connections and get the best speeds you can.  That being said, you can only download as fast as the other peers are uploading.  If they have 20 torrents open, you  are only going to get it in dribs and drabs.  YMMV and probably does.
