Google+ (Google Plus)
https://plus.google.com/up/start/?sw=1&type=st
a social networking alternative to farceborg is
close to launching itself to everyone

any comments?

i hope it makes a serious dent in farceborg

i'll post my account info when i get one

This gives one a better feel for what G+ is like,
than the link above.
Not the same as using it, but closer ...

Indeed.

I'm also not a Google fan for a variety of other reasons (albeit somewhat related).

what are the other reasons?

beside them supporting throttling based on content type
on the wireless/mobile web before the FCC.
i don't agree with them there,
but i understand where they are coming from

Just the kinds of things that will totally derail the thread with politics & arguments about economics.

Not sure if it's been posted because I can't seem to focus on reading posts right now. Apparently in the terms and conditions/fine print or whatever, it says that they can basically use any photos you upload for whatever they want.
I'm pretty much on the side of 'screw that shit' after reading that.

I can't help but feel I won't "get it" until other people I know start to use it.

first, for those who don't know,
Marc Rotenberg has been an activist for a long time.
he's concerned with how computers are used and affect people.
including civil liberties and social responsibility

i don't always agree with him, but the issue he raises here,
and the quality of the comments,
make this discussion one i want to share
for you to think about and form your own opinion

it addresses some of the reservations I think
Cee and others of you have about Google

if you can, comment over there

I'm not anti-google at all.  I find their search-engine to be immensely useful.

I do not, however, trust them with any more of my personally-identifiable-information
than I absolutely must.

some of you are unhappy with my support for and posting about Google+

i'll try and cut back on it some.

for those who don't know, i've been mucking with computers for over 45 years,
and have had a good livelihood working with them for the last 30 years.
i know many people who work at Google, and elsewhere.
i was also a key early player in the free software movement,
which gave the world many things, including Linux, BSD Unix as it is today (the foundation of MacOS X),
Wikipedia, among others.
and was/is a major influence on the creation of the WWW by Sir Tim and the Do No Evil philosophy of Google, among others

i posted this on my farceborg(facebook) wall a few hours ago,
except they forced me to turn it into a note.
from here on out,
i'll just be checking in there every few days for their stunted form of email
known as fb messages

moving on from farceborg
by Len Tower Jr. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 12:26am

as the next step in moving over to Google+, I will be cutting back on my 'Like'ing and commenting on the news here on farceborg, a lot.

G+ has a small learning curve, but is just better, and it's still being developed.

the last 11 days over there, has been some of the best i've had on my 40+ years on the Internet and it's predecessor, the ARPAnet. Partly, because everyday, the software/web_sight was improved, and the community blossomed.

i'll keep you all posted, unless the Zukerborg and his farceborgs can my account, +/or delete these posts.
Hope to see many of you on the Gside -len

ps: farceborg just told me this has to be a note, not a wall post. G+ doesn't care.

thanx fb for another fist in my face

back to your usual sboxing now ; - }

How does this Google+ really work exactly?
You post your stuff, and Google data-mines it and sells the processed marketing information
(just like Facebook), but G+ also claims free-use of your content, like pictures, a move that
FB tried to sneak in a while back, but backed off when they saw how many people suddenly
left amid storms of protest.

Oh, and there's some communicating & sharing with your friends,
but that's not really an essential part of the business model.
[see, that was a jest, albeit based in truth.]

I'm not anti-google at all.  I find their search-engine to be immensely useful.

I do not, however, trust them with any more of my personally-identifiable-information
than I absolutely must.

In this, however, I fail to see the humor.

has to be said not massively overwhelmed by it....and the fact that you cannot automatically see or find stuff you may be interested in that easily is a drawback
