the banks in the Uk have been given an 8 year reprieve yet the general populace is left to pay for their mistakes.....when will the government learn that you cannot make a tower by stealing the bricks from the bottom to make the top?

no. we don't. the math has already been done on this: currently, people stop paying into SS on any income above about $108k. raise that to $180k (or better yet, remove the cap altogether) and the problem disappears.

#@!

you replace the problem with another.  Then more cash would go to bad investments.

People are living longer!  Why not work longer if you can't afford to retire on your own money?

Furthermore, I don't see why people who are able should not have the option of just saving for their own retirement.  SS was originally supposed to just be a safety net, not a general fund for everyone whether they need it or not.  Got a close friend on SSD (social security disability).  I'd be okay with some of my taxes going to that but I still want to be able to invest my own share of the general social security fund how I see fit.  Chile came up with a good way of letting young people do that.

...So basically what I want to see is you can just pay a smaller SS fee that just goes to needy people and you are free to put the rest of what you'd have to pay in whatever fund you want, or just spend it on booze...

what bad investments would those be? SS funds are backed by US T-bills - by far the safest investment there is. As far as the Chilean plan goes, it was decimated by the 2008 financial collapse.

anyway, moving on: Rick Santorum is mad at Google for what happens when you google his last name:   http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/21/tech/web/santorum-google-ranking/index.html

It is brilliant, isn't it?  I read it as a tweet earlier today from, I believe, Jesus's Wife, or some such, which is why I put it in quotes.

I wish I had thought of it first.

what sad about "9-9-9" is that the poor and middle class pay more
and the rich and super-rich less

the conservatives are so good at fooling people into hurting themselves

The ruling elites have been doing it as long as we've had "social structure"....
I'm only surprised that it surprises anyone anymore.

Let's see here.  Herman Cain is accused of sexual harasment and denies the allegations vehemently.  And more strong denials at the fiasco they call "The Republican Debates".  And then, moronically, he calls Pelosi "Princess Nancy".  This sounds exactly like a man who would harass women.  And did he really say " for every woman accusing me of sexual harassment, there are thousands out there that have not".  Big time LOL with this guy.  For all of them, really.  One of the best comments I read today was:

Noted female conservative commentator defending the republican field: "All the candidates have their little pecadillos."
Cain response: "I can assure you my pecadillo is not small. Now how about dinner, princess?"
Perry response: "The American people understand that I'm an imbecile. But they understand that it's an understandably common human trait amongst us."
