Dear Len, thanks for summarizing my thoughts. I'm not criticizing Israel, though i know they over reacted. Let me clarify what i think about this problem;
Our president made a statement about his aim of sending humanitarian aids to Palestine by a state-owned flotilla. He would also send nurses, doctors , some low level politicians etc. Israeli goverment and foreign affairs ministry warned him they might either start an armed fight or arrest the people in the flotilla. So mr president gave up sending an official ship, and instead he supported some charity associations - which are also quite conservative and religious. Some people gave interviews to the newspapers saying "we won't leave our palestinian brothers alone, we are going there in order to be a martyr".
I have gone to an island trip with that ship. It's nothing like an ammunition vessel, it's just a simple passenger ship. And no real ammunition has been found into it when Israeli army investigated it. Just toys, medicine, tents, etc.
But assuming they had warned Turkish goverment, and passengers had made stupid statements, they over-reacted.
They might have held those people captive, or they might have arrested them as well instead of raking the people.
The crime is mutual. And i will never forgive mr president for supporting such an illegal activity.
As for the Palestinian people, as a person who lives in the center of the middle east and europe, i can say honestly that 1 out of 3 Palestinian people works with Mossad&Israeli ministry of security selling out the informations about their government policies. They have sold pieces of their territory. And they also have illegal terrorist groups hiding inside the residential areas, and they also send suicide bombs to Israel. So they keep terrorizing and Israel keep reacting.
As a country which used to have good interactions with both of them, i think Turkish government should take a role as an interceder instead of supporting one of the sides in an illegal way.
This "but they are muslim so they are our brothers" watchword makes me sick. Palestine has always supported the illegal terroristic groups which threatens the unity of the Turkish Republic. They also back-stabbed us back in war of independence. They still gum up the works by sealing alliances with Southern Cyprus.
On the other hand, we have experienced both useful and harmful affairs with Israel. They might be over-reacting due to a passive agression caused by their common history full of holocausts, banishments, statelessness, etc. But they are honest enough to warn you before they intervene in.
And if Palestini people might be our brothers, Israeli people might as well be our brothers. There are still many Turkish people working and living in the Israel. Building good relationships with Israeli government and people has taken years, but screwing the whole things up just took a day thanks to religious discrimination and prying into the affairs of the two governments.
