To the board admins
« on: September 15, 2011, 12:43:29 PM »

Seriously, folks, there are add-ons that can be used to cut down the spam traffic. Every day for the past two weeks or so, I have spent 10-15 minutes reporting spam posts before I even make one post and it's getting tiresome.

Either fix it or state plainly that you have no intention of fixing it so your moderation can be made aware that they are expected to keep a sharp eye out for lots of spam posts.

That's been my assumption anyway....

Len zaps most of it before I can get to a computer.

Len zaps most of it before I can get to a computer.

Len notes that Cee, Hayley, and Sean zaps alot of the spam.
Len notes he is often away from computers.

Len checks the sbox for spam whenever he gets on the Internet,
just before he gets off, and several times an hour while on.
Len actually checks the sbox for spam more often then
he looks at his email.
(other mods differ in their email checking habits.)

The mods and admins here are aware of the problems.

The mods and admins all live in the same time zone.
And our sleep time overlaps.
Which causes those who live east of the USA,
to see more spam than people who live in and west of the USA.

The mods and admins here are aware of the problems.

But it's OK to let us know you are less than happy.

The admins here are quite busy.
(Cee and I are mods, not admins (but we're busy too ; - ))
The admins will comment as and when they have time.

  • do you have a really SLOW internet connection?
it takes me less than 10 minutes each morning to
clean up the spam from the hours the four of us were asleep.
And it's a lot more mouse clicks, and often some investigation
    than just Report to moderator
(we are really carefully about not deleting n00bies, the real fans, not spam bot users).

    is something else happening?
    be specific, please

  • all you have to type about a spam post in a Report to moderator is
    bot

though we enjoy the variety and diversity of the text
    in all your bot reports.
(it's always nice to learn new profanity)
it's not something you need to type to get spam taken care of

  • before i was a mod, i scanned all the spam, to
clean up the board for me.
didn't take all that much time for me

i only reported spams added to existing threads,
or spam that was obnoxious (e.g. hard porn),
    rather than just annoying

note: all four mods get an email for each
    Report to moderator
    sent

I'm not going to bite, len. As my thread title indicates, I was addressing the board admins. I appreciate you and CeeGBee responding, but the admins are the ones who need to implement the anti-spam add-on, not the moderators (who do quickly clean the board of spam).

I was told that it was not as easy as I thought by a board admin, but not really told why it was not as easy as I thought.

Having lived on the SBx before and after spam, I would say it's an annoyance, but also if I had been a noobie during this time, I probably would have avoided the board all together once I saw several spam threads.

For months, maybe even more than a full year (as far as I know first hand), there was an issue with SMF that prevented this forum from being updated - I forget exactly what version we were in at the time - but after months of getting error messages, updating the SMF version was finally successful.

Before we had CGB or Len to help moderate, before anyone even posted links and suggestions to use add ons, I had researched add-ons and spam blockers, not finding anything suitable that was compatible with the forum version we were running at the time. I don't know what the issue specifically was with SMF that wouldn't allow updates, but Sean (the grand master of the internet that he is) was finally able to defeat it and updated the forum to version 1.1.14, the version we now use. Team Amanda is of course aware of the issues with spam and this forum in general and it's not being ignored. Hopefully we can cook up something really nice and kick ass by the time Amanda's new album is out that will take care of all the technical issues we've experienced, and add on some neat new features. However, that's taking time and I understand there is a legitimate need to fix the spam issue before then.

Keep in mind that while we do have some awesome volunteer moderators, they are not the only ones removing the spam content - us admins receive the same spam reports and in addition to deleting the garbage we see as we browse, and the spam that you guys help report, we also try to pre-emptively remove problem users (aka spam bots) even before they post and we try to do this in the BEST way possible that will not affect (or will not potentially affect) current and future forum users from accessing this board. I spend a lot of time reading these forums to make sure that the real legit posts are in appropriate forums, that discussion is heading in constructive ways and helping forum users however i can - even if it means trying to mediate problems they have with other forum users, moderators or admins. Trust me when I say that there *really* are much better uses of time and energy than to delete spam bots - all of us mods/admins don't LOVE to remove russian hair growing links, in a perfect forum world we would not be needed (there is no joy to deleting robots).  I would really like to get to the point where we can find and implement a fix that holds us over until we can fix some of the bigger issues that some of you may be having on or with the forum and add features.

With that being said - please know that I'm all up in the Shadowbox's biznass. I'm on here every day reading everything. I apologize if you guys feel ignored, because you are NOT being ignored. Speaking on my own behalf, I've had some major projects for work that I had to focus a lot of my attention on, and I'm sure you guys can understand that it's tough being spread thin and blah blah blah priorities, but I will revisit my research on add ons, fixes and try some more to get those pre-emptive spam filters/registration blockers integrated into these forums.

Thanks for that, Hayley.

Also, the Russian hair growing links are the most annoying, so thank you for your continued vigilance. ;-)

it's even more complicated than I originally thought - there are website/server concerns that are a bit of a roadblock right now to updating or changing SMF.

Tagged a crap ton more of them this morning, one of the spam bots even posted in the spam bot thread. How's that for irony?
