Walking around Ground Zero isn't exactly something you do to kill time. I'm going there with Doug(?) and Kelsey on Monday but that's only going to be for a few minutes to photo something for my series. It's not exactly a happy fun place.

As for central park, Strawberry Fields is lovely.

^^ well it's a CITY, what do you expect. Besides some people are probably trying to reserve spots at expensive restaurants with their significant others. It's a party and adventure everyday in New York City.

Central Park in winter, I've never been there - at that time of season - but I'm sure it's amazing, would you take pictures?

Oooh they're renovating/expanding Juilliard, go check to see if they're almost finished. South of Bronx, Roosevelt Island, Empire State Building, Rockefella, the GE Building. Those are nice places I think you should visit.

I like how the train line from NYC to where I need to get in Jersey to sleep at night DOESN'T RUN ON WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS.

New Year's Day I may be homeless and cold.

"walk" is perhaps a poor choice of word

i've gone by ground zero regularly since 9/11

to see a city heal itself from this wound
the city of my birth
my second favorite city in the world

to remember those who died, and those who helped

to see how others who visit react to the site

'nuff said?

{i fully expect nyc to be partly closed on 1 jan ; - }

another reason to go to juilliard/and the rest of lincoln center,
beyond the renovation,
is to see their outdoor christmas tree
it's often more beautiful then roc center's

There's TONS to do in NYC every day.  And we're in a rush because we're busy.  Imagine if on your walk to work every day you had to push your way through groups of people who were walking really slowly and gawking and taking up the whole sidewalk.

First of all, definitely get a $7 all day Metrocard so you don't have to feel guilty about hopping on the train or bus to only go a few stops.  The trains won't run as frequently as they do on regular weekdays, but they will still get you where you need to go.  If you need to figure out how to get from one place to another and you have internet access, hopstop.com is your best friend.

Restaurants will be open!  There's a place at the corner of 7th Street and Avenue A called, fittingly, the 7A Cafe that will be open for brunch all day.  It's inexpensive AND yummy.  Plus the LES (Lower East Side) is a cool, rock and roll sort of neighborhood with little shops, parks, etc., some of which I bet will be open.  Little India is on 6th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, although the best of the bunch is Panna II, which is on 1st several doors south of 6th, and I know it will be open as well.  For great vegetarian food there is Dojo, which is on East 4th Street near NYU.  The NYU/Washington Square Park area has a lot of cheap, good vegetarian-friendly food.   You can take the ACE or BDFV trains to West 4th Street to get there.  If you want to venture into Brooklyn, there is a place called Junior's Restaurant which has the most AMAZING cheesecake.  (Junior's actually has outposts in Grand Central Station and Times Square as well, if you want amazing cheesecake in Manhattan, but I prefer the original.)

There is a park/museum called the Cloisters, which is a replica of a monestary, in Inwood.  You can take the A train the whole way up there.  I've heard it's really beautiful.  It may be closed, though.

Grand Central Station is definitely worth visiting-- beautiful architecture and it's both warm and free.

Broadway shows will be playing and there may be discount tickets at the TKTS booth on 46th street.

If you want something cheaper than a show, movie theaters are open and are great for warming up for a few hours.  There are big ones at Times Square, Union Square and near Penn Station.

If you are going to Ground Zero, be sure to visit the church that's nearby on Broadway.  You can see the cemetery in the back of the church from the WTC site.  Inside the church is a great museum about the aftermath of the attacks.  Sorry I can't remember the name of it.  Please please please, from someone who used to have to walk past the site every day to get to work, don't take photos of yourself smiling big for grandma in front of the site.  It's just... not cool.

And if you end up really lost, don't be afraid to ask for directions.  We don't bite unless you ask nicely and I don't know a single New Yorker who would pass up the chance to dazzle a needy tourist with their knowledge of NYC geography.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Junior's. It's decent but not the revelation I had heard. Then again, I'm not a cheesecake connoisseur. Others might dig it.

The IFC Theater is right off the West 4th St. stop too. They always have good stuff. I saw Eraserhead there a couple of weeks ago. Good times. I think the Zeitgeist isn't terribly far away either but I don't remember the exact location.

I'm telling you all, New Yorkers are big pussycats. (Well, 9 out of 10.) Just be nice and speak clearly, and you'll do fine.

Once you have their attention,
New Yorkers are most helpful.
Just don't be timid,
and getting their attention is easy.

Hmm, New Years Day?  I recommend calling everyone you were with the night before and apologizing then laying in bed til 8pm clutching your stomach.

On any other day I would advise you to go to central park and check out Thoth.

girlwithacameranyc i'll check out out 7A,
next time i'm in the east village

billh thoth wasn't there, but i'll check back
i enjoyed the walk from 5th and 58th - olmstead and

MASS i hadn't been by strawberry fields since
shortly after it was dedicated
it is still one of the most moving memorials,
i know of
i don't remember the park benches,
and i certainly don't remember the

the first few i read were to dead from the music world,
which seemed ok

New Year's Day I may be homeless and cold.

This is why I mostly don't go out late in the winter, as for whatever god forsaken reason, apparently anyone who lives near Hackensack between the hours of 1am and 7am CLEARLY would not want a ride home on mass transit.  One damn bus at 3am would be great...otherwise we wind up pulling the 'long waffle' in whatever diner we hit (the one on 34th street is friendly and used the oddities wandering in to hang out from the cold, and Yaffas is still awesome in the witching hours) to spread out the time and nurse food until mass transit home starts up again.
