Drummers!
« on: December 26, 2007, 10:30:39 PM »

Just got bored and thought I'd start a thread for drummers.

I march snare/bass and play drumset a lot.

Oh, just got a new set of bongos. I don't really feel like faking it, so if anyone knows a "technique", I'd sure appreciate learning.

Like any other instrument, there's a lot to learn if you want to be really good and not just another scrub who picks 'em up after smoking a bowl.

Some things to work on:

using fingertips/palms/side of hand to strike the head; each yields a different sound.
hitting near the rim as opposed to striking the center.
heating the drumhead from underneath (usually using a candle) before playing; varying times can change the sound quite a bit.
using the thumb on one hand to press down on the drumhead while striking it with the other hand; this raises the pitch the drum produces.

Ah, that helps a lot, thanks. Heating the heads is definitely something I would never have thought of.

I'm wondering, does that have more of a high-pitched crack or a really deep sound?

Drums.. mmmm

I just found out I got into the indoor drumline 2 weeks ago
it starts after the new year. im pretty excited, but kinda pissed.
ive been marching for 4 years and im tired of the whole time thing

BUTTT
I dont know much about bongos. besides that i got a set willed to me when my grandfather died
I know how to play congos if that's of any use, but there are a few techniques you can use for them.. i like the whole heel thing where you cup your hand a bit and just smack down to town until your hands are so callused they fall off..
you can find out technique at like uhh.. vicfirth.com ?? you can find information on like anything drum related and how to play them there...
what hugo said sounds good too

it's quite high-pitched and is 13" instead of 14", but it's not too high and sounds gorgeous. it's got a remo ambassador head but i may deepen the sound and put an emperor X on or something of the sort.

Drummers - y'all might want to search for a video from a Foo Fighters show in Toronto a day or two ago. Geddy & Alex from Rush jam onstage with Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins on the Rush classic "YYZ". Taylor does a damn good job on what is a rather daunting song for any drummer not named Neil Peart. 8)

I love playing the drums. I am in a a metal band, and an experimental/doom band. I love drums so much I don't have enough time to do everything I want with it.

I wish I could find a band that does Mahavishnu Orchestra inspired stuff. That would be a blast. Billy Cobham is my freaking hero.

Aaah yes, drummers! ;)

I play tenor in a lower division showband, and 1st bass at a top division showband.
I also play drumset for about 9 years now.

I'm reasonably impressed...

My first Rush show was on the Power Windows tour...  15 Dec 1985, and I've seen several shows since.
They never fail to put on a good show, and I believe they're touring this Summer.  If they come to your
town, it's money well spent.

Doom, teka, kah!

I had a brief class years ago on drumming, but don't remember much more.

My 1st Rush show was March '81 on the Moving Pictures tour; I'm going to see 'em downtown on June 10. Means I'm going to miss the Detroit stop on True Colors (next night), but oh well...

I played drums in grade eight band, I still know how to, but it's like basic drumming.

Secondly yesterday I played Poor Little Rich Boy on the piano and chair, realizing that my knitting needles left dents in the chair.
