What do you think of song remixes?
« on: November 21, 2011, 12:39:16 AM »

I like a fair amount of techno but I can't think of a single time I've ever heard a song remix that I did not hate.  To me they are all "nails on a chalk board" bad.

Even if the remixed song was of the same genre of the remix (techno) I find that the remix always sounds ruined to me.  It's as if the remixer intentionally broke whatever it was about the original song that sounded good.

Can anyone name a remix they like?

Not talking about covers mind you...  I actually like a lot of them.  Some are even better than the original in my opinion.

Thoughts?

Depends on the remix...  Is it a complete re-working of the song? a minor adjustment
of the balance among, say, different instruments? ...or maybe someone just f-ing around?

i like a few...but usually done by other singers and not just strictly dj's.

it's just...weird...i either listen to really raw electronic music (oh god sorry, never understood the difference btw electro and electronica...) like kap bambino and crystal castles and i wouldn't see the point in remixing stuff like that, or more acoustic/indiepop stuff and even there...uhm...

i think i have prejudices against remixes.

Dirty South's remix of U2's "I Think I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" is awesome.

there's a lot more, but I don't have time to get to them now. maybe I'll drop some more later.

still, there's more bad ones than good ones.

The remix depends on both the song and the artist.

It just really depends on the artist and the song.

Zomboy remixed Flux Pavillion's Bass Cannon and it was epic.

I agree it definitely depends on the artist and song. I rarely like a remix unless it is really really good with a heavy kind of sound.. Does that make sense?

KMFDM's album of Juke Joint Jezebel remixes was actually very good.

NIN does a great job with remixes.

I never listen to remixes on my own just for the remix (if i liked the remixed song before the remixing, the remix will annoy me, and if i didn't like the remixed song in the first place it's even more annoying) BUT if i'm out dancing, and a remix of something comes up that was non-danceable before but now is, i'm always very happy a song i like is part of the party.

It totally depends on the song, most the time i'd rather not bother, but every now and then you get an absolute gem.

Depeche Mode have had some decent ones done.

almost everytime i tend to enjoy the original song much more. i remember back when cd singles were popular as a physical release i would always choose the one with the b-sides over the one with the remixes.

Me too, I'd always pick an original track or a cover over one with remixes. Especially as some bands have really incredible b-side tracks.
