hmm i've been wondering how thurston moore's solo album would be. I suppose if it made amanda's number 1 it could be delightful, i may get it one day.. however i will not get bjork's volta. As aweosme as i think she is for being so different, original ect. and just being a freak in general, i don't really enjoy her music

i feel quite the opposite about bjork...i think i'd like her music a lot more if she wasn't "so different", and if she didn't put such a goddamned emphasis on "look how wonky i am"........straight up, it all went downhill after she brutally fucked over a friend of mine about 10 years ago/i read how she "makes music for herself and not for fans" -- if you make music only for yourself then don't release it, don't make music videos, don't fucking tour (and in turn not show up to the concert because you're busy being drunk/high on trl).

if anyone cares to hear said story, i'll elaborate.

Hm, on a similiar note, I've always wondered if musicians listen to studio recordings of their own work after they've been released.
a different musician actually listed their own band in one of the top picks haha. i'm sure they do to hear how it sounds and maybe different mixes... or from time to time... but it must be weird if you're a vocalist in a band to hear yourself in songs you probably play live a 100 times for a tour

I remember David Lee Roth telling a story about riding around LA with Prince in Prince's car, listening to nothing but alternate versions of Prince songs! ;D

plur

nothing about this statement surprises me.
have you ever seen the kevin smith bit on prince?

fucking. gold.

i recently read a best-of list where the guy had their newest record, and said "it wouldn't say too much about my art if i didn't think it was good enough to be on here" -- and i got it, and it was kind of half kidding, but i understood...but as for the dolls...

i happened to be near brian when someone asked if he listened to the studio albums, and he said he didn't. to para-quote, he said he "sometimes played 'lonesome organist' for people" and would listen to live recordings and such but didn't really hear the studio versions after himself, amanda, and team went through the mastering/recording process.

it's funny, because i used to wonder if successful musicians listened to themselves, and then i had a shocking revelation and realized it didn't so much matter if one was successful or not, it's just about attitude. i listen to demos i'm working on (for my band) -- i like the songs we're working on...if i didn't that'd be a problem...but it's just how it's laid out, y'know? i totally understand where brian's coming from, but i also understand why one would listen to their own stuff, too. i have a friend in a rather successful rock band, and i got an icky feeling in my stomach when i saw he had a large assortment of his own music on his ipod in folders titled "awesome jams" and "solid gold face melters"...shit like that. i have no doubt in my mind that he spends a lot of time listening to those mp3's -- and while that doesn't necessarily gross me out, the lack of modesty does.

Eh, what about songs that mention Prince? Like "Bad Touch" by the Bloodhound Gang. Seconded for the Bjork story. I think the whole "songs for myself" and being weird is another form of wanting people to pay attention. I tend to make art for myself, but I'm one of those hypocrites who shoves it in front of everyone's eyes.

not too many bands play vermont, so my fried and i we were both used to traveling to see our favorite bands.......in 1997(ish), said friend -- hardcore bjork fan -- went to see her in concert a few hours south of where we live. she actually asked me if i wanted the spare ticket prior to the show, but being i was just getting into her solo stuff i declined and her brother went.

she called me around 3 or 4 to say the venue had just thrown up a sign stating the concert was cancelled and would possibly be rescheduled at a later date, no refunds. since her father had dropped her and her brother off, expecting they'd be out of a show around 11pm, has somewhere in boston and was not reachable (remember, this was when cell phones weren't common). she went to see "good will hunting" and tried to stay inside somewhere warm for the other six hours (it was february). shit happens, people get sick -- i understand that.......hell, i've had to reschedule my plans a few times in my life because a band is sick/reschedules -- i don't blame them, they're human...

however, in bjork's case...
here i am at home, watching tv, thinking "damn, that really sucks for kathryn, she's stuck down there" blah blah blah...then who comes on mtv's total request live? FUCKING BJORK. DRUNK! i've seen her interviewed before, sure she's "weird".........but in this case, she was clearly DRUNK. fuck that.
from what i can assume, she had an offer to show up on mtv and took it and figured "cancel my show to appear on trl? suuuuure."

you know what, i don't know for real what the fuck happened -- i'm just calling it as i saw it, and from the evidence i had, it looked as though diva singer got a last minute offer to appear on tv, cancelled her show at the 11th hour, and jumped on a plane to ny.

that show did end up getting rescheduled btw -- no refunds, just "you go to the rescheduled night with your old stub or fuck yourself"...real considerate of all of the people who couldn't reschedule their lives and show up to a show after pulling a stunt like that the first time. and go figure she says she doesn't really care about/need fans (since she "writes music for herself")........i really wanna put faith, trust, time, and money into an artist who feels like that about me, as a fan.

Yeah man, it's definitely a rewarding feeling to have bands out there that are good to their fans and are thankful, humble and appreciative of them (it's like without us there would be no them). I think we all can agree that the fan appreciation and respect the Dolls have makes them a million times more respectable and worth supporting than bands that have an apathetic or even degrading view towards their supporters.

I would rather the artists made art for themselves than the FANS.  I have seen too many bands go to shit after getting a taste of the FANS.  Witness Metallica, Guns n Roses, hell, even Def Leppard had two good albums.

This is not to say that being popular makes you suck.  I am saying that if the artist stays true to themselves, the true appreciators of their art will be there.  If you don't like it you wont buy it.  I think that is all that Bjork is saying.  If she was concerned about pleasing the masses, her work would not be real.  She's not saying "fuck you" to anyone.  She's simply saying, "This is what I feel.  This is what I do."  She's making art and puting it out there for people to listen to or not.  The choice is yours, and she will continue regardless of whether she is accepted or not.  I see no apathy in this approach.  I see respect.

I cannot speak to the cancellation thing.  If it really happened that way, it's pretty messed up.

i'm ALL for artists writing what they need and want to write, not what fans are "hoping for"...fuck, i'm a smashing pumpkins fan -- i never would've had "adore" if billy corgan delivered what "fans were looking for".
i wish i could find the bjork quote, but unfortunately in 10 or so years she's built up quite the following and it's been buried in cult of personality bs. here's the thing...woman has a son, and a psycho fan mailed her a bomb -- that would certainly sour me on being a public figure, i get that...but this quote, it wasn't about that. she made it very clear to the interviewer she didn't care if anyone ever HEARD her music.

she apparently changed her tune a little bit this year..."nobody has ever told me how my records should sound," she said to adatez "i make music for myself and at the time i'm making it, i'm really not thinking about commercial appeal or mass acceptance." -- maybe she changed her tune, maybe she was just understandably fucked up with all of the lopez drama, but it's always rubbed me the wrong way to see a major label artist talking about not caring if people heard their music or not.
