To this I add:

The Secret Lives of Others

and

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly -- which I saw today and, just.  Wow.  Prepare to get emotional and to be amazed at the same time.

Straight To Hell The Pogues, Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello and Courtney Love in a spaghetti western by Alex Cox, the guy who made "Sid & Nancy". What more could you want?!

That movie was insane & I like Alex Cox movies! The Pogues as a coffee addicted gang & Danny Boy popping up in the middle of the movie for no reason, madness! I loved it but if your talking Alex Cox movies the cream of the crop is REPO MAN

& another awesome movie is Grosse Point Blank

I've never seen "Repo Man", I well want to. I love the bit in "Straight To Hell" when Elvis Costello leans into the conversation with a tray and goes, "Nibbles?" Cracks me up!

I'm adding The Maltese Falcon and Key Largo to my list. You gotta love a bit o' Bogart.

Tank Girl
Shaolin Soccer
Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster
Come Back, Charleston Blue
The Name of the Rose

...I wouldn't call any of these great (well, maybe Shaolin Soccer for sheer laughs), but I'd heartily recommend them all. O0

"Secretary"

Maggie Gyllenhaal is awesome. James Spader is awesome. The whole movie is very me and it makes my wounded little heart ache.

Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby Awesome twisted road movie.

Wild At Heart Another great twisted road movie!

La Haine Great film with a shocking ending.

Man Bites Dog A truly disturbingly dark black comedy, highly recomended.

On top of some that have already made the list I recommend Sweeney Todd...Just beautiful, and wonderfully dark, Mirrormask...written by Neil Gaiman, has a labyrinth-esque feel, Hot Fuzz...absolutely hysterical, The Company of Wolves...fantastic dark fairy tale based on the writing of Angela Carter, The Wicker Man...the original not the remake, Horror Hotel...fantastic old horror movie with Christopher Lee, and there are many more but I am drawing a blank.

I just saw American Cannibal. Not the greatest "documentary" I have ever seen, but it does put you off watching reality tv ever again and it is a little unsettling.

(Well it has put my husband off it. I don't watch it, if I want to watch bogans whinge I'll go to my mother in laws house.)

21 Grams - An under-rated, under-viewed modern classic

Agreed. So much.

Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto Del Fauno)
I couldn't possibly put it into words!

Seconding this as well. This is such a visually beautiful movie. But even regardless of that, it's SO fantastic.

Straight To Hell The Pogues, Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello and Courtney Love in a spaghetti western by Alex Cox, the guy who made "Sid & Nancy". What more could you want?!

Boy's Don't Cry Oh man, I still get upset at the thought of this movie. Hilary Swank is ahMAYzing.

More amazing films. Especially Boy's Don't Cry. This film is actually the most heartbreaking film in history. If you know the story of Brandon Teena, don't let the fact that this isn't quite true to the story put you off, this film is still fantastic even though it doesn't stick to the facts completly.

Someone also mentioned Brazil, but I forgot to quote :(
I'm seconding this as well because it's one of my favourite movies. Although I had to watch it twice to get it properly.

Clerks and the rest of Kevin Smiths movies (Clerks 2, Dogma, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back).
Some people say they're overrated, but they're downright hilarious.

Tekkon Kinkreet! Made by the people who made the Animatrix. This anime is SO beautifully drawn, and they use a lot of neat tricks to make movement and things. Watch this!!!!

Other great films;
V For Vendetta
Sunshine
Sin City
Ringu/Rasen (I'm yet to see Ringu 2.) These are the japanese versions of the ring if you didn't know. Vastly superior to the american ones (in my opinion anyway :P)
Steamboy

I think that'll do for now D: I get carried away.
