how did she fit every song on the record? :/ i don't understand that--aren't there like, 20-25 songs?

From what I gather from that text, her statement implies that she didn't cut any of the songs she was actually considering for the album, and not that she squeezed every new song that was an initial contender. Her tweets earlier in the day reflected some concern that she'd have to pick some to cut, so it's nice to hear that she has a solid line up done. One big step to making this album a real, tangible thing :)

yeah it's similar for me...the more i listen to it, the more i like it, although i'm generally not a fan of synthy sounds at all  (one of the reasons i loved the dolls so much...). but it's growing on me!
also did anyone else see the timed comment on soundcloud saying TIJUANA TIJUANA TIJUANA TIJUANA at the part that goes "do you wanna, do you wanna..."? i totally keep hearing this. hilarious.

(and i also downloaded ben folds five's new kickstarter thing single, it's called "do it anyway". #doit?)

so happy do it with a rockstar made the final tracklisting--it's very sing-along. i hope not tooooo many upbeat, sing-along songs like that make the record. maybe DIWAR, mass ave. and perhaps one more, but i want some more meaningful songs as well :)

i'm happy we're getting every song they recorded (according to amanda).

hm.

maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if this song had stayed in the drafts cemetery.

i'm curious to hear the demo, though, if it's just piano.

Honestly, I'm curious to how folks reacted in Australia when Amanda and the band played this song at the warm up gigs. People went nuts and danced like whoa at the East Coast shows last June when she played this song and I definitely picture people loving the final version of when/if it's played live at any of the upcoming shows.

I would say, keep an open mind on this album, even after hearing this first song. Something to consider, besides the obvious synth and sound scape differences, is the song at its core. This is the first serious AFP song we've heard in a long time that wasn't a cover, or a random song, as this is part of a larger collection (the new album).

Also, the art shows are going to have acoustic performances... while I don't know what exactly that will entail with AFP & TGO, it's pretty exciting to think about hearing multiple arrangements, and a stripped down version of such a layered track.

I'd need to give it a couple more listens and then maybe take this back, but on the surface it, lyrically, sounds like a 'random song' as you put it (And I totally get what you mean by that)

It just feels a little "Woo twitter, media yay!"

I really like the "All the practice in the world won't get me good at loneliness" and the "wait, wait, wait, i'll be fine in a minute" lines... I wish I could make out more of the other lyrics, but I suck at understanding lyrics on the first few times listening.

Also, I like that you can dance to it, and I don't mind the synthiness of it, as I enjoy synth music, too.

Can't wait for the rest of the album!

I LOVE the synths. <3 <3 <3 synths.

Lyrics here, copied and corrected from the ones posted at Soundcloud by a commenter:

(Good night, lay me down to sleep).

Do you wanna dance? Do you wanna fight?
Do you wanna get drunk and stay the night?

(Going rest now, let's go please).

Do you wanna dance? Do you wanna fight?
Do you wanna get drunk and stay the night?
Do you wanna smoke till our throats are sore,
make out and then talk and then make out some more?

Do you wanna dance? Do you wanna fight?
Do you get drunk and stay the night?
Do you wanna know all the things I do
when I'm all alone and thinking about you?

Do you wanna?
Do you wanna?
Do you wanna?
Do you wanna?
Do you, do you, do you, do you?
Do you, do you, do you, do you?

Do you wanna go back home?
Your animals are all alone,
there's a chicken waiting on the stove
and your cousin left a DVD of
Swinging in the 70's.

Do you wanna go back home,
Check your messages and charge your phone?
Are you really sure you wanna go
when you can do it with a rock star,
do it with a rock star?

Wait. Wait! WAIT!
I'll be fine in a minute.
O-o-oh.
Wait. Wait! WAIT!
I'll be fine in a minute,
fine in a minute!

I don't want your body, just a part to listen to—it makes sense
All the practice in the world won't get me good at lonelinessless
(Lone-li-ness-less, lone-li-ness-less, less, less, less, less...).

Do you wanna dance? Do you wanna fight?
Do you wanna get drunk and stay the night?
Do you want to see all my cavities?
Talk about the crazies in the Middle East?

Do you wanna get really terrified?
I _ _ _ _ and then we're gonna die.
Do you wanna cry?
I can make you cry!
Do you wanna hit me baby one more time?

Do you wanna?
Do you wanna?
Do you wanna?
Do you wanna?
Do you, do you, do you, do you?
Do you, do you, do you, do you?

Do you wanna go back home?
Your animals are all alone,
there's a chicken waiting on the stove
and your cousin left a DVD of
Swinging in the 70's.

Do you wanna go back home,
Check your messages and charge your phone?
Are you really sure you wanna go
when you can do it with a rock star,
do it with a rock star?

Wait. Wait! WAIT!
I'll be fine in a minute.
O-o-oh.
Wait. Wait! WAIT!
I'll be fine in a minute,
fine in a minute!
Wait. Wait! WAIT! (Do you wanna go back hooooome?)
I'll be fine in a minute.
O-o-oh.
Wait. Wait! WAIT! (Do you wanna go back hooooome?)
I'll be fine in a minute,
fine in a minute!
Fine in a minute!
Fine in a minute!
Fine in a minute!
Fine in a minute!
Fine in a minute!
Fine in a minute!
Fine in a m—

Now, my opinion:

· Killer, killer chorus, I just fucking love the first chord and how it's not a higher chord.
· Funny, endearingly desperate lyrics mocking the whole concept of rock stars and their world and their delusions, while probably incorporating many real elements from Amanda's thoughts and situations. Like, a perfect balance of self-mocking and self-consciously serious.
· All the mandatory AFP cultural references are there, which is a good thing. “Do you want to hit me baby one more time?” made me chuckle. Still does every time.
· The choir effect in those loud bits is just beautiful. Also, the song feels a bit like AFP playing only not. The GTO sounds very much like AFP but at the same time it's a different kind of AFP. I think this is good; and, if anything, it will need a bit of time to get used to.

· I have a big problem with the intro. [hazy part] [LOUD PART] [beginning of verse 1] [BUT LOUD PART AGAIN JUST IN CASE] [now proper verse 1] I just think she should have either left the original very long intro teh song apparently had or just went straight from the first loud bit to the first verse. I just don't like it.
· The song overall feels too disjointed:

awkward intro
verse 1 - prechorus
CHORUS - afterchorus
bridge
verse 2 - prechorus
CHORUS - afterchorus
afterchorus fade & cut-off

Disjointed, prog songs and all that can be really good, and Amanda (especially in the Dolls) is queen of structurally-complex-songs, but this one just feels too catchy-pop epic-synth-rock-y to be this disjointed, frankly. I don't think it does it too good. Especially the awkward intro I mentioned. I think the intro should be different and the song should either be longer or just repeat the chorus again.

I've listened to it like 20 times already though anyway. And I think it will proabbly fit better in the context of the album.

i think that's part of the problem- i had a few moments where i was able to briefly fantasize about how i thought i might love it if it were a solo piano (or maybe just heavily stripped down) track, but in addition to the loud and in-your-face instrumentation with the minimized piano, the vocal distortion kind of just seals the deal as far as me being able to consider the "core" of it.

This.  Sort of.  It's not my style but I'm optimistic about it's possibilities.  Like it's different, but at least it's trying to be something.

it would be nice to hear piano/stripped down versions. thats what attracted me to amanda in the first place: her furious banging on the piano.  i do really like the song however  :headbang:
