That sucks.

Girls shouldn't hitch-hike.

very sad

girls should do what they wish to
though it's best for anyone
to be informed what the risks are

and from the crime stats i've seen,
being smaller, younger, attractive, and/or female
does increase the risk of
harm, theft, assault including rape and murder

having said that,
i (a 6' tall 165 lb, built, bearded, long hair male)
hitchhiked over 70,000 miles in the US and Europe
in my twenties and early thirties, with no real problems
but i also learned and thought alot about how to go about it
before attempting any hitchhiking

Damn that´s so sad. RIP

why no one like art but artists?

most of us like art and artists

just a few rotten apples out there who
do evil like this

glad her friend and fellow bride traveling companion,
Ms. Moro,
plans to finish the travel and the art

It's sad that it's so hard to be trusting, not just for women, but anyone.

I don't think it's too much to ask for a woman to go wherever she pleases without being raped and killed. Being a rather small woman who doesn't carry any weapon other than a sharp wit, I should hope so.

so sad. a very noble cause however, and ironically, her death may (in the long run) further her cause more than a successful trip would have. Case in point, we are reading this article. martyrdom does have a way of reaching people more effectively...

As far as hitch-hiking goes...I think it's mostly a crap-shoot (with slightly better odds)

I have heard people say (like my father) that it used to be so much safer in the 60-'s and 70's, but that's not really true. It does "seem" that way, but consider the effect of mass media today. Someone goes missing today and it can make national or in this case international news (fucked up thing is the younger or more attractive the victim is, the broader the national coverage...i'd like to think if some fugly oaf like myself got into similar trouble, i'd be worth the same effort by the media, but I know better) in a matter of hours. 30-40 years ago however, it would have taken days, and by that time unless it was high profile(serial killer etc.), its not likely it would get picked up by many new outlets. I guess you can say that the negative consequences are just more public.

I hope this case brings a lot of attention, and I hope that in her place, thousands pick up her cause...it's very likely...

Yeah. Women should do what they want. Women should walk dark alleys at night in mini-skirt while in a drunken stupor. They should mock little thuglings for their lack of sexual prowess as they scurry off into the night. Girls should do whatever they want, because the way things should be will provide them all the cosmic protection they need.

Fact: Unsavory as it is, girls are born as targets. It only takes a bad minority to put all women at high enough risk that certain precautions are necessary. I'd say that avoiding hitch-hiking (certainly in America, at least) is a wise precautionary measure to take. Being well-informed does not make a woman less vulnerable on the side of a highway. It certainly won't take the pain out of losing a daughter for whatever parents or loved ones have to identify the body... or whatever lover has to cope with the trauma alongside the victim.

Hitching has its inherent risks. I've done 20,000 miles of it. Add in another good chunk in freighthopping miles. As a male, I am less of a target. As myself, I am uncommonly capable of addressing threats. There may be exceptions, and there is always the turn of luck, but most women would be ill-advised to try to take to the roads by thumb. So, I give the advice that reality favors over that which a perfect world favors.

You don't need to see the crime stats, Len. You only need to know the ways of the world... and the crime stats don't take into account the particular nature and personal isolation of hitch-hiking. Your reassurances could get someone hurt.
