A tip for DD about the No, Virginia release...
« on: April 24, 2008, 01:48:02 AM »

As we have listen, the new songs are amazing, and "No,Virginia..." is becoming a cult album even it hasn't released yet.

As a marketing and advertising student is my responsibility to tell you that you did a mistake in the last record promotion: many of us get blind with the new information era and its consequences, i mean, the release of the whole album "Yes, Virginia..." in myspace music before the real physical release, which results provoked a fall in the expectation of the album and the experience to listen the poor quality of the songs' audio.

PLEASE, DON'T DO IT AGAIN, MANY OF PEOPLE CAN'T REFUSE TO LISTEN WHEN YOU ARE TELLING "DO IT".

Great revolutions comes in silence, please Dresden Dolls, don't give more previews of "No, Virginia...", we can't avoid to not listen to it!!!

WE WILL BE PROUDLY SITTING IN OUR LIVING ROOM, LISTENING NIGHT RECONNAISSANCE AND THE KILL, AND COUNTING THE TIME, TO LISTEN, AND TO EXPERIENCE,THE REAL AND STUNNING, NO, VIRGINIA.. REVOLUTION.

Hugo.

I totally agree. I have been playing the little song vs. song game. And I hate it when they say one of the new songs. BC I want to hear the real thing. I can't judge it on whats not on the cd. I can't wait until the cd comes out. I am having a hard time coping without it.

Yeah, I'd prefer if they just didn't release anything before the actual CD.
Yes, Virginia wasn't special anymore because I had already heard all the songs.

I personally love it when preview tracks are offered (at reasonable quality, otherwise I don't bother). It might be one thing if a record has a concept and everything's supposed to fit together. (Even then, a good preview will intrigue people.) Albums with no cohesive narrative, meanwhile, are open season. They're a bunch of separate tracks. Hearing one or two beforehand shouldn't ruin the experience of hearing the record.

I say, bring on the previews! If people want to open their virtual Christmas presents early, that's their fault.

Well, I guess the leak being as exclusive as it is is a good thing then...

I was expecting for this kind of response.
Yes, It's true. But..... there is not but!

There's only a marketing advice. Not mine. You have to create an expectation in the product.
The Dolls are doing well, because many people has waited many years for this songs and I consider that giving the songs before the real release is like ruin the final product.

If the dolls are expecting to gain fans, i think that sometimes is better to keep the old ones than gain new ones, that's what happened with the panic! fans the dolls gained on the tour, where are they? The old ones are always supporting, the new ones are gone.

Maybe this is a good strategy (to put the whole album on myspace) for new bands, when fans are not expecting nothin', it's a fuckin' question of minds and tastes, personally, i wouldn't recommend it for the dolls.

But it's true what you are saying, theres is not but.

Offering a preview does create excitement. It also, in some cases, helps you decide whether or not you want to bother with the album when it comes out/gets leaked/whatever.

Saying "many people" is a little misleading. Sure, some of the hardcore fans have wanted studio versions for awhile, but it's not like the general public is desperate to hear them. Besides, quite a few hardcore fans have "ruined" the experience already by listening to audience recordings. Putting out a nice, clear studio track or two isn't going to hurt them, or anybody else.

Actually, I've seen several old fans move on and plenty of new faces enter the fray. Plenty of new people came along during or after the Panic tour.

Whether or not any more should be released, I don't know, but that's not my call. If the band wants to release more, that's their business. Either way, I'll still pick up a copy come next month.

I agree with Doug.  Either way, I'm buying the album (actually, I've pre-ordered 2...one as a gift.)

Yeah, The Kill and Night Reconnaissement are previews already.

Their target is desperate to hear them, and their target is NOT general public, but it's good if the band want to focus in general public, I didn't say that it was wrong.

Calm down, I am not putting a gun over the dolls.
If the do it, it's for a reason, I accept that, I never meant to say what they should do.
Don't try to blame me.

And I've actually preordered two copies since the album was available to preorder.
I am not talking about hearing the album without purchasing.

I'm with you Doug, too.

Lonesome Organist and Pretty In Pink have both been released too, so we already have over a third of the album...
For me it won't be special anymore, and I will probably wait a while to buy it.

I somewhat agree with both sides.  It does sort of ruin the album a bit to put a preview of it out there, but at the same time you still have the album art and the actual physical copy to look forward to.  And it gives the not-so-hardcore fans a chance to hear them and decide if they like them enough to buy the album.  The hardcore fans will most likely buy the album either way, so if the Dolls wanna cut the wait I say go right ahead!

Yeah, I'm not in a side, actually.

I mean, there are advantajes and disadvantajes to put the whole album in myspace.

Advantajes:
- Not-so-hardcore fans will have the chance to listen it.
- This is official, piracy can fuck off.
- Gain new fans.

Disadvantajes:
- Poor audible experience of the album.
- People won't purchase the album, they will download it.
- Expectation will fall.
- This is not a preview, this is actually the whole album.

Anyway, the dolls or their marketing manager will take the desicion.

Caso cerrado.

Yes, but you can also release previews AFTER it's released.
That way people get the chance to try before they buy, and it's not ruined for everyone else.
you get all of the advantages, and almost none of the disadvantages.

One of the reasons for early previews is to build excitement. Labels are obsessed with numbers. Albums that sell well for the first couple of weeks tend to do get more support compared to albums that sell consistently but don't really get noticed. How do you get that initial splash? How do you get a few impulse purchases? Previews. Pre-release singles. In other words, they build excitement for when the album is released. I'm not saying the beancounters in the front office are always right but there's a reason why they've been offering up things like pre-release singles for over 40 years.
