Math Metal?
« on: May 24, 2008, 03:31:55 PM »

I mean, come on!!! What does Mesuggah has to do with Math??? and why math.

This kind of freaks me out, ´cause i was reading a magazine and they said "Mesuggah so called math metal ...." and i was like FUCK!!! yeah they are going to be awesome, and then i came to good internet to listen them and... they have as much math as knowledge Paris hilton haves of the String theory.

Can someone explain me why are they called Math metal?

Or if i am listenting to the wrong math metal band pelase recommend me one.

And if you guys know anyother genre of music that sound all fucked up post it.

... math metal buff!

I don't know about Meshuggah being math-metal, but apparently math-metal bands write their music to math formulas, meaning their stuff is supposed to be [and sound] super technical. Some bands pull it off, and it almost makes sense at times, but others, it's just silly. When I have more time later I'll list some math-metal bands for you.

Yeah, "math-metal" is meant to describe bands who do a lot of work in odd time signatures. Even Tool gets lumped into the category from time to time, although Meshuggah and the Dillinger Escape Plan seem to be the examples most people cite when referring to the subgenre. Odd, since most of Meshuggah's songs area actually in 4/4 - the accents are just in odd places...and DEP's not even a metal band imo.

I feel sorry for any drummer that has to play math metal.
Or any band that has to call themselves math metal. What a ridiculous concept.

One of my exes is a math-metal drummer. It's his passion. And it's actually really cool to count along to, if you're nerdy like me. :-D

And Meshugga is one of his favourite bands, go figure.

I agree on Dillinger Escape Plan not being metal, but they're definitely hardcore enough that I can understand why they would be considered math metal. I think the term 'metal' is used too frequently now to describe anything with a heavier sound. When I think of 'metal', I think traditional Norwegian Black metal, not grindcore bands.

But I do believe Coverge and Genghis Tron are considered by many to be part of the math metal phase. Also, I've heard the Fall of Troy to be labeled math metal as well, but I think they're more progressive and/or hardcore than anything else. Botch, Brutal Truth, and even Isis might be considered math metal, too.

What the fuck? Well. once a band added me on myspace, they were a death metal band singing about Jesus. I was listening and all of a sudden I could hear the singer growling out "Jeeeesusss diiiiiiied on the grozzzzzzzz" *deep thundery growl* so I looked up the lyrics. They were singing - ahem - screaming bible verses then worshipping Jesus. It wasn't blasphemy actually, it was more like "Jesus died on the cross and for that I love jesus, all you sinners out there, get down on your knees and ask for forgiveness." Anddd that was just odd.

I am understandin the concept of MM i was excpecting something as pirate metal where they talk alot about pirate stories and that shit and they even have like ... folk touches; so math metal is ... just a beat changing metal some sort of progressive but a lot more agressive?

i propose that the Rite of Spring is ten times more metal than any crap-ass song by Messugah. then again, i am fairly biased.

i dislike most metal. >_>'
