Fundraiser for my Escape Route!
« on: June 02, 2012, 08:59:01 PM »

Hi everyone. I'm Christine and I can't even remember if I ever even posted here before despite being an AFP fan for many, many years. ANYWAY! The reason that I'm posting now is that I could really use your help with this little fundraiser I'm doing. There is great power here.

First, the link to my fundraiser: http://www.gofundme.com/escaperoute or http://bit.ly/escapefund

The page gives all of the information but, since we're all friends, I'll quickly explain here as well.

I have Type II SMA which makes me completely dependent on a wheelchair. The home that I live in is NOT wheelchair accessible and so I have absolutely no way out of the house without causing my loved ones much grief. Because leaving the house is such a hassle, I rarely do so and it's quite the bummer.

My fundraiser is to gather enough money to build a ramp on my home so coming and going is no big deal. Right now it's a big deal. And it's a big cost. Reason being, it has to be built from the second story deck.

I understand that not everyone can give money or are afraid to give to someone who they don't know. But if you can at least PLEASE SHARE the link, I'd be super grateful. Also, to be very clear here, I'm not looking for any kind of profit and if my donations should happen to exceed the building costs, I'll be donating it all back into the community to someone else with accessibility issues.

Here are the links again: http://www.gofundme.com/escaperoute or http://bit.ly/escapefund
And here's my Twitter: @meltinghalo

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I love you bunches.

We had to build a ramp for my dad after his "mini" [ha-frickin'-ha] stroke last Summer.
Oddly, the biggest nuisance was working around the gas meter.  Good luck!

Ohbytheway...  Dunno about New Jersey, but in VA some assistance is available from
the County for projects of this sort.  If you haven't already, you might look into it.

Yes. We looked into finding other ways to get this done with help from the county (also MDA, state assistance, etc.) as well as volunteer organizations, such as Lowes which keeps people and funds on hand for community projects. However, since I'm not a child and am an adult, no one will really touch this despite the need totally being there. The problem is also that this wouldn't/can't be a ramp for just three little steps. It's massive (second story) which makes costs completely ridiculous. I don't know why wood is so expensive, but it is and no one wants to take this on.

So, after 4 years of being essentially trapped and writing letters and calling everywhere and getting estimates galore, it looks like fundraising is my only option left.

I'm going to try to get photos and a video up as soon as possible so people can see that I'm not kidding when I say this is a pain. It's a pain!

But thanks for looking. I appreciate it very very much.

Unfortunately, no. The main part of the house is upstairs (kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, living room). All that's downstairs is the garage and a room with no heat that my parents made into their bedroom so that I could have the Master.

how big an expense are we talking here? maybe this would be a better option than an exterior ramp:   http://www.silvercross.com/homeelevators.html

The cost of an exterior ramp and an elevator (without installation) are approximately the same. This ramp has been quoted to be as much as $20,000 dollars which seems simply ridiculous. My family and I have decided if funds are able to cover the cost of an elevator, that we will go that route. I'm still a long, long way off to committing to either option.

Here's are photos of my front door to give an idea of why the second story ramp (or elevator) are the best option.

I've contacted silvercross to see if their quotes are any less than others so we'll see! I thank you for your help.

that SilverCross site also has elevator stair lifts - http://www.silvercross.com/inclinewheelchairlift.html

I'd look at that before any other option, as it looks like a one-day install, and it would be a fraction of the price of an elevator.

Yes. Sadly, the stairs are too narrow and too steep for the chair lifts.
