halloween costumes and such
« on: July 28, 2007, 06:05:16 AM »

Like many people on here, I've dressed up as Amanda for Halloween in the past (actually two years in a row, '04 and '05) and this year I want to dress in another dolls-related costume. I absolutely love the song Kaledrina. I honestly think it's the most beautiful song ever written. So I decided to dress as Kaledrina. No one will know who I am. They'll think I'm one of those morbid dolls or something, but I'll know who I am. :]

So I'm going to do my makeup like a baby doll and probably wear one of those face hanging out eyeballs. Anyone have any other suggestions to add to my Kaledrina costume? I know it's really early for this, but I like to plan in advance. If it ends up being too complicated I might just go as Emilie Autumn... I've been wanting to do that too.

Anyone else planning on dressing up in a dollsesque costume this year? Or have you in the past?

I wanted to be Amanda for this Halloween, and currently am trying to find the correct sealer for my eyebrows so I can put makeup over them and then draw in her eyebrows.

I've considered shaving my own off in the past, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Love, it is NEVER to early to start next years costume.
I'm not anything doll like this year (in fact, i'm a big colorful, loud, squawking bird that needs to hand sew 3500 feathers onto a dress she still needs to make)
But I have been a china doll in the past, I wore an old southern belle dress my aunt used to have, and I had an old parasol I painted, nad a bonnet I fixed, and it was awsome. I di paint my face stark white and have rouge blush and scarlet red lips.

I can't really reccoment costume ideas, but you can (I have done this before) take injry makeup, and make it appear that you are cracked china, or part of your cheek and neck are, you just take tissue, and liquid latex and lay it in spaces where it appears cracked, and you can spray it over with hairspray to harden it and give it that china look. <3

i was amanda palmer last year for halloween, and my friend
dressed up like brian. people at the doors when we were
trick or treating had NO clue as to who we were. It was so
much fun dressing like them.

I think the Kaledrina idea is a
great one. It sounds like it'd be a lot of fun, too.
Your ideas seem to be ones that will work out really great, too.
it'd be really cool if you could have some sort of recording
in your out fit that could say "My Name Is Kaledrina, and I love you very much..."
at the pull of a string, or the push of a button.

Emaline: I found this great sealer for my costume, but I can't remember what it's called. >_< If I find it I'll post the name here.

Briezion: I'll definitely look into that for cracks. I was just going to draw on some cracks with eyeliner, but that sounds like it'll look better.

Mandolin Rain: My friend and I dressed as A&B a couple of years ago. People were like, "Oooh mimes!" Hahaha. And I didn't even think of a recording! Great idea! I might attach a string to the back of my dress and ask people to pull it, then say, "My name is Kaledrina and I love you very much." :]

And what's the best white face and body paint? Every one I've tried has made me break out. Also, what should I do with my hair? I have really short hair and it's usually all sorts of colors. I'll probably just wear a wig with pig tails, but suggestions are nice.

a wig would probably be best, with your short hair...
last year i was contemplating wearing a wig to be amanda,
because my hair was the longest it'd ever been, to the middle
of my back/blonde/black. It was a huge commitment for the
costume, but i cut it all off, and am actually happier for it.
.....i can't wait to see pictures of this costume when you get it all together.

Cutting your hair off is so liberating, right? :] People wonder why I do it.

I'm thinking of a wig made of yarn or something... if I can find one. Or I could get a black wig with pig tails and put some cobwebs on it.

I might not do the missing eye thing. I don't want my costume too gorey. I want it to still be cute. I might just put black eyeshadow around one eye or something. And for the missing arm thing I was going to have one arm inside the sleeve, but I was thinking of just painting my shoulder black and drawing threads across it to make it look like my arm is hanging off or something. Hehe. I'd post my drawing but my scanner is broke'd. :[

Oh and any suggestions on the dress?

lost eye, which you mentioned, rusted, missing/loose buttons etc. oh but i guess own ideas count. hmmmm. I don't know but if I was a girl I'd dress up like a slutty doll. oooooh maybe i should do that for hallowe'en but I'm afraid itll be too cold.

Really?  Do ya think?

I mean, don't get me wrong; I'm quite a fan of the Slutty Doll outfit, but I've always seen Kaledrina as a traditional frilly-dress china doll, albeit one who's seen too many years of loving abuse.

I might do,it depends if I get invited anywhere for hallowe'en, which hasn't happened in the last..four years or so.

I get visual imagery of one of those wind up dolls in boxes, where you wind them up and then out pops a pretty fragile little doll that spins around to music at the start of Good Day,so if I get invited I might dress up as one of those.I just need to find out what they look like, because I've never owned one. I just read about them when I was little.

AHHHHH i didn't say kaledrina was a slut, i said that if i was a girl i'd dress up like one. not that if I was a girl I'd portray kaledrina as a slut.

ha ha, i guess this mechanism isn't, in fact, broken.

some other costume ideas i had...

orangeman & red little girl
could be a dirty old man with yellowing skin and and orange penny, and a girl with very ale skin and rooooosy cheeks, and a skirt...mmhm.

ultima esperanza, if you can get ahold of a wheel chair. maybe cover your legs with a dress...sheet...something...

a poet who starts up a band of his own
a volleyball player with both the wrists broke
a lesbian cokehead

Sandy, with levi's around your neck and stuff

a battered bride

an 11 foot bride
okay, 8

a coin-operated boy/girl

a mouse and a model

Mandy

a girl/boy anachronism (scars on arms, cracks in hips, blisters on lips, red eyes, bruised thighs...etc)

then there's some other characters that would be cool, but I dunno how they'd look

Blake
Mrs. O
Delilah
Mary's Surgeon
Bluesboy
the Gardener
Lonesome Organist & Page Turner
Mr and/or Mrs Sender
Me & Mister

Blake
Mrs. O
Delilah
Mary's Surgeon
Bluesboy
the Gardener
Lonesome Organist & Page Turner
Mr and/or Mrs Sender
Me & Mister

Blake -
Pink hair..pink gloves. Or red..i'm not sure.

Mrs. O -
Similar to my neighbour. Only Mrs. O bakes cookies for little children who play in snow. That's the image in my head..

the Gardener-
Well,to be honest,I don't have too much imagery for the gardener. He's in green..err..wheelbarrow.
I do,however have some degree of imagery for... (and this is where it gets hard to explain) ..the person who they plan to make a man out of.
He's ill looking..not too well at all..bruised,pale,skinny.
Although I could be completely wrong, because I've had two different imageries.

I also have imagery for Miss Cotton (the one who is quite the stubborn kind.)
She's got lots of blonde hair (LOTS) and .. i don't know. Maybe she's a figure of speech.I'm not good with figures of speech.

So there you go.That's a slight insight to what goes on in Meridian's mind on a daily basis. Amongst people stacking shelves full of knowledge that might become useful someday, there's actually some imagining going on.But not much. It's kind of state-the-obvious imagining.

i've dressed up as both amanda and brian before, but it wasnt for halloween.
i went to this neon bowling thing, and my friends and i thought it would be fun to dress up so i dressed up like amanda and she was brian.
also, we still like to play dress up, sooo that was another occasion where i dressed up like amanda [my friend was brian] and then we switched and i dressed as brian.
it was fun.

I wanted to be Amanda for this Halloween, and currently am trying to find the correct sealer for my eyebrows so I can put makeup over them and then draw in her eyebrows.

I've considered shaving my own off in the past, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

I found my sealer!

I bought it at a theatrical makeup and costume place.

I have Ben Nye Nose & Scar Wax (which is the color of skin, the other two are clear), Ben Nye Castor Sealer, and Mehron Fixative "A" Prosthetic Sealer. The mehron stuff still has the plastic seal on it, so I guess when I did it I decided I didn't need it. I think the castor sealer and prosthetic sealer can be substituted for eachother. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think the Nose & Scar Wax is first. You work it till it's soft then put it over the brows and smooth. Cover that with the castor sealer. Wait till all of it is completely dry before applying your makeup. I'm pretty sure that's how I did it. It turned out great.

I was gonna say, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Ben Nye.

Kevyn Aucoin illustrated the technique of covering brows in his books, but he never gave out product information so it was always difficult to find the right ones. Thanks!

That drives me crazy! I love his books and I always see a product I love and can never find it. I see his point in not sharing brands, but it's still annoying. Haha.

I'm thinking I can combine my original "low-matinence" idea with something crazy. I was thinking this year I might just stick an H on my forehead and see if anyone gets the joke (Red Dwarf...anyone...?). what I might do is get an incredibly outrageous outfit going on with the striped knee socks of course. I could be an incredibly outrageous/ eccentric holigram.

what is it?? oooh sephora sells it eh?? I should go buy some, but fuck sephora never has sales, well they do but it last for like 20 minutes and they take off 2 cents off of everything. ugh.

it's a great thing I don't have bushy/thick eyebrows or else cake make-up on them wouldn't cover it up much. and I've wanted to buy some spirit gum to cover it up but I honestly don't know if it'll work. and if it does, will it tear off some of the hair's on my brows when i decide to take it off? anyway.

I've put spirit gum in someone's brows before, with disastrous results. He had a hard time getting it off.

It's eyebrow conditioning gel. It helps regrow sparse brows, but it saved my overplucked ones, so it'd help shaven brows grow back faster.

OHHHHHHHH. so let's pretend I forgot where my eyebrows once were, do I just swipe it around? and the hair grows where it's supposed to?

I dressed as Brian last Halloween, but no one knew who I was supposed to be. One person guessed that I was Charlie Chaplin, another thought that I was a mime (close, but not quite), and while I was handing out candy, one father told his child that I was one of the Blues Brothers (I wasn't wearing any makeup at the time)! Oh, and I got stranded on the I-190 on my way home from a Halloween party, and had to walk to a 7-11 to call my parents for help, and I was apparently disturbing the customers in my getup, because the clerk eventually asked me to wait outside, despite the fact that it was probably about 40 degrees out, and I wasn't wearing anything heavier than a dress jacket. Heck, I might not have even had the jacket. That was a miserable time for me. It's not like I dress like that everyday, and chose to have the car stall out, just so I could walk to his store and vogue. >:(
