What sorta ruined my day is that I was reminded once again that even as we speak a
real disaster is unfolding (in New Zealand, in fact... I think)....

Peter Jackson is fucking with the entirely film-friendly story that is The Hobbit. I don't
know the full extent of the damage, but apparently he's added at least one entirely
new major character.  WTF is wrong with the man?  It's a great story just the way
Tolkien wrote it, needing no "tweaking" from Jackson's pudgy little fingers...  >:(

I heard he added Galadriel to The Hobbit too, though she's not mentioned in the real book. Galadriel is one of my favourites and i really like Cate Blanchett, but what the hell this guy is trying to do? he has to write a new piece of story to add her to the movie.

It's sort of ridiculous to whine about this when people are dying all around the world, but my Google Calendar has also died. I really needed it a lot.

Jason Webley was there though. Also, I know the Melvins (and High on Fire) were okay as I just saw them all at Bodega :)

@Peter Jackson discussion: I miss his B-movie days. He's become a bit of a wanker auteur lately. I remember talking to an American guy who loved the LotR books, who, upon finding out I was a New Zealander, immediately proceeded to spent about an hour ranting about how PJ ruined everything. Not cool.

Credit where credit's due, Peter Jackson did some pretty damned impressive stuff with
the LotR movies, not the least being getting them made at all.  Unfortunately, for people
like me (who've read the series covers-to-covers many times, and actually have a pretty
good understanding of what all those amazing CG battle-scenes and such were about in
the context of the story), many of his alterations to the story simply make no sense...
For example:
1) Tom Bombadil - great character, but cutting him out saved probably half an hour of film,
and cost very little story-line.  [Good change  :)]
2) Arwen, Liv Tyler's character, was little more than a trophy in the books, a prize for Aragorn
if he fulfills his "destiny".... but by merging that (small but important) character with those of
her brothers, Jackson cleaned up the flow, and updated a rather male-chauvinistic aspect of
Tolkien's narrative, without dramatically altering the story. [Good change  :)]
3) He moved an army from one battle (where it had a reson to be fighting) to another, where
there was not any justification...  for no apparent reason...  and he reduced Gimli, a prominent
dramatic character, to comic relief.  [WTF changes  >:(]

I hadn't heard about Galadriel appearing, which would be utterly inexplicable both in-story (since
she doesn't appear anywhere in the book, even by reference), or in production (hey, let's add
Cate Blanchett to the payroll!)...

It's sort of ridiculous to whine about this when people are dying all around the world, but my Google Calendar has also died. I really needed it a lot.

I use iCal, it's not an online application, but it's about the same as Google Calendar. I don't know if there's an equally good alternative for windows, though :/

Okay, I just looked for something similar as iCal for windows, and apparently, this is a clone: http://monocalendar.com/
I don't know if that's really what you're looking for, because I don't know what way Google Calendar died (temporarily/lost information/etc...) but I just though I'd get it out there...

I really like the LOTR movies. So shoot me xD The thing is, while it would be lovely to be able to put everything on a screen exactly how it is in the book, it's just not feasible. Not every character can be fully developed, you can't explore all their back-stories, and sometimes you have to give in to the Rule of Cool and make something awesome rather than accurate. I am perfectly alright with this xD Besides, it'd be really fucking boring if they kept everything the same as it is in the book - why bother making it a movie in that case? Just read the damn book.

As for the Hobbit, the fact he's added two female characters in is fine by me as well. You can't reasonably make a mainstream movie and have absolutely no female characters - again, this is an adaptation, not a literal translation from book to movie. PJ's working in a completely different context and a completely different medium to JRR, and it's right and proper that he should adapt the work to meet those differences.

Also, Balrogs are fucking awesome.

How did you even think any of us can shoot you  :-*

I also like watching such big productions. I mean the more money they put into a movie, the more wonderful visual effects, actors actreses, sceneries we get to see. I have a great time whenever i go see such a big film. But i see them as seperate pieces of art rather than an adaptated movie. Because whatever they do to makes us enjoy the movie, they can never and ever draw the same picture as the one we create while we were reading the book  ;) i'm also not angry with the absence of the Tom Bombadil. It's already a very long movie, if they had added him to the movie it would take an age to end.
But i'm surprized to hear about Galadriel's existence in The Hobbit, i agree with Indja's idea, they might have needed some women characters in the movie. But I don't find it necessary to change the main story just to show some beautiful actress on the screen. At least in this one i think the director should be careful, these are among the most famous and wonderful classic books of the whole history.
It's a big dilemma. If they stick tight to the book, it might not break such a big box office record but it makes Talkien's fans happy. And if they add some more characters to make it become popular, it will surely break a record but fans will feel like producers betrayed Talkien.

^Thing is though, I doubt if PJ's changing the plot siginificantly to fit the women in. Both the female characters who he's rumoured to have added are wood elves, who do indeed pop up in the plot of the Hobbit. To make two of them women with speaking parts seems like a far more sensible thing to do than to pretend like there's no women in Middle Earth at all. Anyone who goes to see an adaptation of a book must understand that changes are going to have to happen - those inner monologues are going to be cut, or turned into voice overs, or put into a conversation with another character. The subtlety will go in a large number of cases, the plot might need altering to keep an audience interested, etc etc. Even the most die-hard fans would find it a struggle to sit through Tom Bombadil's screen-time xD And even the most die-hard fans should accept that to make a movie you have to have money, and to have money you have to be able to make money from it, and you can't make money from a film that neglects half the population or that sticks so rigidly to the intricacies of the novel that it loses any sort of movement or artistic-ness (totes a word xD) or momentum.

So thar. The Indja hath spoken ;)

^Indja hath spoken fair. I say once again i agree with you, i'm just a nerd who loses herself in the books rather than the movies.
To confess, i was like 14-15 when the first movie of the trio has come. And i didn't like it, i couldn't feel into it. It was a deep one.

It's just because i hadn't read the book first i guess, after that i decided to give another chance and i have read it and i became a really big fan of Talkien, then i have read whatever i could find that was written by him. Then i watched the movie again and it was like a really different world to me. Not like i have dreamed it would be, but it was highly enjoyable. So that feels like a big dilemma as i said before. Am i crazy to ignore it just because Galadriel was added? Nope. I'm also a big fan of Cate Blanchett since the first tine i have seen her as Elizabeth I. And it will be amazing for sure, but not enough to take somebody who has never read the book before, into the real story which was written by Talkien. What i am trying to say is, i think adaptations are good to see but they can't replace the book itself. The story has to change and get shortened. If they try to tell the whole story they will have to make a series rather than a movie trio. That's why i am saying it's better to consider a movie as a different piece of art, or else it becomes too hard to watch it with an objective point of view as a fan.
And the reason i think the director should be careful about the story is, if they make a big change the main plot goes to a different place, of course for the people who doesn't read and the ones who are not in a ripe age to understand it. Anyway, as a person who has tought english and literature i see children hardly read books these days.

That was the one thing that really annoyed me about the films.  All the other changes/interpretations I either didn't mind, didn't notice, or quite liked, but they shouldn't have done that to Gimli.

My aunt's coming over. My mom didn't even ask if I had plans for the day and stayed home from work to entertain my aunt. I don't get things done when there are other people here, and I'm supposed to be nice to my aunt, when I never want to ever speak to her or see her again. Maybe I can cut her brake line...
