If a song isn't starred and you'd like it, chances are someone will upload it for you (if it's not already available at automaticjoy.com) if you request it.

unless I get a request to not share anything specifically, I'm under the impression that it's all good for everything right?   So if that's the case anyone can feel free to send a song my way and I'll post it for everyone when i get a chance.

Also, are there lyrics around for any of these songs?

as far as lyrics go, i have text files for most of those songs saved on my computer.  any song in particular you were curious about?  it would be nice to have a space somewhere to post them all, but i haven't been able to think of a way it would work well.

two songs she played the other night, one of them starts "in a manner of speaking...", and the other one has the lyric of "I think i'll wait another year".

So looking at the titles I guess the second one is Another Year and I coulda figured that out myself, but the first one I don't know at all.

The other one would be a cover titled "In a mannor of speaking".

Can someone send Leeds United my way if it's available?

jealous guy isn't shared either because amanda doesn't want that show shared, or because the taper that taped the show doesn't want that show shared.  either way, it's not circulated.

I for one wouldn't mind knowing which is which as far as those things go.  I'd hate to ruffle feathers by sharing things that aren't to be shared, but at the same time I don't want to hold stuff back if the reason is that the person who taped it doesn't want it circulating.

What's with all the tapers not allowing their recordings to be "shared" when obviously it has been shared with someone, otherwise people wouldn't know it exists.  Hypocritical, elitist bullshit.

tapers pay for their equipment.  their gear and the tapes.  they put time into editing them, etc.  they have the right to control whether or not they want their recordings circulated.  certain tapers share everything, others keep their recordings to themselves and/or close friends.

people know songs exist by seeing the shows they're performed at.  not because tapers tape them.

No, they don't have the right to shit.  They are recording something they don't have the legal right to and therefore have no right being elitist assholes about it.

No, they don't have the right to shit.  They are recording something they don't have the legal right to and therefore have no right being elitist assholes about it.

For starters, the Dresden Dolls have given permission for fans to record their shows.  They've also given permission to distribute them, but they haven't made a demand of that part of it.  There's no obligation to do anything but give the band a copy of the show when you've taped it.  After that, if you want to share it with other people no matter how limited or unlimited that is, it's up to the taper.   So, it's not illegal.

Hell, it's probably not even illegal for artists that don't give permission.  Most states don't have a law explicitly saying it is illegal and it hasn't been challenged in courts yet for any cases that don't involve someone selling the recordings for a profit.   So, there's only a gray area there, not a fully defined legal or illegal stance for the most part.

As for the right to be an elitist asshole, that's up to your perspective I suppose.  Once you've spent a few thousand dollars on recording equipment, get to the shows before everyone else in order to get the best spot in the room to tape from, have to deal with people who are unintentionally doing their best to ruin the recording, and then come home to clean it up and make the recording sound as good as possible... only to MAYBE get a few "thanks!" from a small percentage of the people who listen to it?   I dunno, mabye it's just me but I can understand why some people wouldn't be terribly thrilled to make sure you get a copy of their recordings.  It's a lot more involvement than most people even care to realize, you've got the hostility and ignorance of a LOT of people in your way from the start... It's a little difficult to not get at least a little pissed off at the people who don't tape shows trying to dictate what you should be doing all the time.

i asked bill about songs, as far as what amanda doesn't want in circulation.  we should know soon.  it'll be nice to clearly know what amanda doesn't want (most likely anything on the new album), and what tapers don't want.

in that case, I guess I'm holding off on the amanda show from last week until that kinda clarification since I assume a few of the tracks are on the forthcoming album.  (guitar hero for sure, the point of it all too I hope, maybe all the stuff she did aside from Mandy too who knows).

Eh, since there's no appropriate "songs you want covered" thread, I'll make my suggestion here.

I'd really like to see Amanda's take on "Illusion" by VNV Nation. Although that's an electronic band. There's a nice piano bit that was brought into my mind...

I really love Amanda's cover of "I Don't Care Much"... it's probably one of the most heart-breaking renditions I've heard [right after Raul Esparza and Alan Cumming].  Hearing her do "What Would You Do?" ... or even "If You Could See Her" would be wonderful.

Me & the minibar is, so I suppose it should. There are no drums so it is a solo.

Here's a list of all Amanda's known original material and cover songs she has performed.  An "*" means that the song is not currently shared.  If a song isn't shared, it is either due to Amanda's or the taper's personal request.

is it possible to differentiate the requester of non-circulation? if the taper doesn't want something circulating but someone else has a recording of the same or different performance, that should be fair game, no?

Hey. Another good thing to do might be to note that the songs titles in quotes are working titles that could (and probably will) change.

From Amanda’s blog we have knowledge of 3 new songs:

'Don’t take the flowers'
'You owe me a coke' - to be renamed
'Awful detail' (I think maybe we have heard of this one but I'm not sure)

It's listed but I screwed up the name. I thought Amanda said "II", as in "Version 2" or something similar.

I could swear I heard the name somewhere before myself. I might be nuts but it seems familiar. Oh well. I'm pretty sure last week when the official live debut.

Can you find lyrics to Amandas solo stuff anywhere? I tried looking around, but couldn't find.

I went to the gig yesterday and liked Blake says and Astrounat so much, but I want to know the lyrics with songs I like, otherwise I get annoyed.

I am currently on a mac and they are playing just fine with itunes.

control+click  to download the files to wherever you want, then drag them into itunes and they should work just fine.  Otherwise if you have any other helpful information you can pass my way (error messages?  anything detailed about what itunes is doing if it's not playing, etc) I'd greatly appreciate it so i can diganose whatever problem may exist.

also, I'll mirror those files on the website this weekend whenever I get a chance if everyone who's been posting them doesn't mind.   I've been slacking on updates, but I've got a folder full of junk to link that I just haven't done.

also, i do plan to share other solo stuff, but since we currently don't know what, if any, of amanda's old solo material will be put on the new album

And also,i'm confused a little by what sodamark said earlier.
So theres a high chance Night Recon,Astronaut, the point of it all (and the likes) won't be on the new album?  :'(

Feel free to say "For god sake,Meridian.I don't know.I know just about as much as you do."

I doubt that they won't, honestly, I would be extremely surprised if Ampersand, Point of it All, Night R, Blake, Astronaut, and Living Room weren't there.

Hello. New stuff from Edinburgh.

-Will  (Yes, she played "Will" at a semi-secret show last Saturday. She and Max, I should say. He handled the pedals on the organ. I love Max.)
-The Assistant  (New song that'll presumably be on the solo record, which Amanda hopes will be out by Feb. or March.)
-Umbrella  (I'm not totally sure if this is a "true" cover. She riffs a bit on the uke, then the original track kicks in over the PA. Amanda then lip-syncs (or maybe she is singing???) and strums the uke while dancing up a storm. At the end, she walks off while playing and chanting those lines that shall not be spoken. I guess it counts! Fuck it. The cover counts 'cause I say so.)

I seriously doubt it. I wasn't there but my understanding was that it was a completely impromptu thing. The place appears to be a converted church, complete with a pipe organ and church pews on the top floor. For various reasons, I'm going to keep mum about the exact location. Sorry!

Amanda did a cover of "Oh What A World" by Rufus Wainwright with DeVotchka if that counts?

Also, I've heard that The Assistant is called New Assistant. I'm leaning towards the first, but I figured I'd mention that.

When I asked Amanda, she said the former. So did a couple of her posse. I suppose the name could've changed in the past week but I doubt it.

I used it for Blake says video and on the details the length came up as 35 minutes. although the size was still only about 4 or 5 MB.
When put on a mp3 player the song played to the end of the video then stopped, this is around 5 minutes in or so, when I fast forward to anything past that mark its still playing. Yet when played straight through it goes to the next song after 5 minutes.
It's not anything that makes a difference, just a little odd is all.
The same happened for the 'Mandy goes to med school' solo vid.

That happened to me, I was so pissed. I found a solution though. Using audacity, I re-exported it as an mp3, and it was fine. I can't remember if i had to chop off the excess or not.

New cover: "Marry Me" by St. Vincent.

and it's soooo good.  i've been singing it in my head all weekend.

It's been growing on me. I wasn't terribly keen on it the first time around but it is a sweet song. I ought to listen to the original someday.

Couple of extra notes:

-One of the working title songs is actually "You Owe Me a Coke." As I said in an earlier post, I got mixed up when asking Amanda about it the first time.
-Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" was played at the shows with Aberdeen City. I'm not 100% sure it counts, though. Amanda didn't play. She would just took envelope with chiclets and fed the chiclets to audience members and the band while they played. It was almost like a vamp as opposed to a real cover, especially since I recall them playing the same riff over and over. Oh well. If "Umbrella" can be counted as a cover....

Come now, Amanda was playing the uke and singing the song, you just couldn't hear her.

She has covered it actually. Go listen to In a Matter of Speaking on her myspace. The full thing.

True. I was just referring to the absurdness of it all. Eh. I say it counts. Covers can be strange beasts. I have a Japanese cover of the Rolling Stones's "Satisfaction" that's 15 seconds of shrill guitar feedback and random drum bashing. I play it way too often, really.

She has covered it actually. Go listen to In a Matter of Speaking on her myspace. The full thing.

I was there. ;) I eventually drunk posted a bit about it.

Is there a recording of 1.1.94? That's not from the demo? I'm just curious as to when it was last played. Speaking of which, I had an idea for a thread which would contain information about when every song was last played. Would that be a good idea?

If there is one, it's probably buried deep in Amanda's closet. I can't imagine this one having been being played anytime in the last few years.

What demo?  :-\

I do like the idea of a thread about when songs were last played.

The demo that was on ebay for about $1000. It was Amanda's high school demo. The one on the brigade site is her college one. By the way, is it true that there's a track of it missing for the brigade site?

And I will begin work on a list of songs.

Not quite. There was a discussion of it here when the tape first went on eBay. Long story short, the tape was recorded on her then-boyfriend's computer around Summer '97 (I think), which was when Amanda was on summer break from college. Only ~30 copies were made, complete with artwork. (I believe the tapes were professionally dubbed too.) The track listing is as follows.

Side A: Bad Habit / Slide / Predictable Addiction
Side B: Kaledrina / 1.1.94

As far as I know, this one hasn't made its way to the Internet.

There are at least two other tapes people have heard. One is supposedly called "The Long Lost Blue Tape" and is supposedly from '90. I know nothing else about it. There's also a 90 minute tape Amanda compiled around '95 and gave to some people when she was running around Europe. She said it has some pretty embarrassing stuff but, if I'm interpolating the story correctly, Edward Ka-spel (Legendary Pink Dots frontman and longtime friend of Amanda) really liked it. Anyway, that's the tape with the songs that have appeared on the Internet.

Will any of this ever get re-released? I don't know. I'd imagine Amanda will release some demos someday but I'm just speculating. I doubt even she knows if, much less when, this will occur or in what form.

I think that's all correct. If anybody wishes to correct me, go for it. Otherwise, bow to my useless knowledge skills, bitches.

Okay.

Question 2: how big are the files?

Question 3: how are you saving them? That is, are you right-clicking and saving or using some other method?

You should check. There's a chance the links are broken and you're actually downloading a HTML file.

See above. Try left-clicking and seeing what happens. Also, try another audio player. I can't imagine why iTunes would fail but who knows.

No one changed their mind. It was never supposed to be shared in the first place.

Assuming that Boyfriend in a Coma is really the same song as Love Comes In/Call Me Crazy, you have it on there twice.

Just a little question, are there any other recordings of 'Sandys Song' aside from whats on the brigade site that are okay to be shared?
I'm hooked on that song right now, that and the gardener.

Not that I know of. It's a dead demo song, so if Amanda ever played it on a different occasion, it might be very very difficult to track down a recording.

I haven't heard of any recordings of the Gardener other than the studio version and the one on automaticjoy. It was played a little while, ago, though, and I doubt that no one recorded it.

It was played a little while, ago, though, and I doubt that no one recorded it.

studio gardener? wow

No.  A definite on the album.

Hand claps and doowops and full Ben Folds band on the track, Amanda said.  I'm really excited about this song.

Really? But isn't it going to be on the album?
I assumed anything that was going on the album would be off limits until the release.

Guitar Hero was officially posted recently. Ampersand, Blake Says, Night Reconnaissance, Provanity, Have to Drive, and Point of it All have been shared for a while now, and Astronaut and Living Room have been shared since their videos were released.

Is there an mp3/lyrics available for The Living Room?

http://www.sendspace.com/file/65cf0u

 Forty-seven strings are pulled
by this angelic "beating" girl
and it breaks our hearts to hear
the music that comes out of her.
shoulders hang on folded chairs
this will be our church tonight
we have dug out foxholes here
not an atheist in sight.
laughing shaking taking oaths
breaking sacramental cups
we pour the magic in our coats
thinking it can leave with us.

but it’s the wrong way out
20 steps but it’s so harming
when they talk out loud
bend to brace your fingers on me

I’ve been breathing evil air
sharing needles with the sky
looking up remembering
Regina said they're just old light.
but you somehow understood
my oversaturated skin
you held your hand up to my neck
and played me like a theremin
i see london i see france
and all the things that we won’t do
and if i never leave this chair
maybe i can go with you.

but it’s a long way out
20 steps but it's so harming
when they talk out loud
bend to brace your fingers on me
it’s a long way out
past the bar and past the awning
past the easy crowd
back into the end

we have found our solace here
in this unexpected place
like a startled, dying man
kneels in prayer just in case
and while the night sky sadly lit
all that you were sleeping through
death took my friend benjamin
but he left his keys with you
so I’ll kiss the air instead
as not to disturb your sleep
and if you never wake my love
maybe you can come with me

but it’s a long way out
twenty steps but its so harming
when they talk out loud
bend to brace your fingers on me
it's a long way out
psat the bar and past the awning
past the easy crowd
back into the end of harmony
back into the end of harmony
back into the end of harmony
back into the end

I can't decide what I feel about it yet.  Lyrically, some of the best Amanda has written, especially when I read it off the page.  But the actual song -- it's the first possible on WKAP that hasn't stuck, yet.

The Living Room is definitely not my favorite and I hope it doesn't make it on the album, only because I would rather have something else.

I love the simplicity of the song and the fact that you can really hear the lyrics, voice and emotion
and the build up into the "But its the wrong way out..."
Musically i love it,i just think it flows so nice
When it was first released as the video
 i couldn't stop watching it.
I just find it so captivating.
I don't think it will make it on to 'WKAP' though....
and in a way i hope it doesn't as i think it is perfect the way it is
and the way it makes me feel mite change if it was done in the studio with lots of
other instruments, the beauty of the simplicity would disappear for me...
i think

The lines are great.  I read it and I think: poetry.

The music hasn't connected.  It happens.

More instrumentation might help, for me.  We shall see, if it comes out.

The best thing about the living room is that I can hear the emotion Amanda puts in it more than any of her other songs.
I love it and hope it makes it to the solo album.

so... (i derive from the replies on this post)   is every song on WKAP going to be "reworked" "muddled with instruments" or involve "hand-clapping" with Ben folds????

I'm not saying that any of the above mentioned would be a bad thing...

i do realize that this question may be left unanswered until march...

I hope there are a few just-Amanda songs, meaning only Amanda and a piano; nothing else. I think Straight, Ampersand, PoiA, and Another Year are good candidates; though I can imagine & and PoiA with maybe a tiny bit of something more.

Am I imagining things, or have I read somewhere that there was strings arranged for Ampersand?

She seems to be putting a lot of strings on the album, but I think songs like that will sound quite nice with a little variety of instruments.

Plus, IMO Amanda seems to be going for a different sound for this record so its not so Dresden Dollsish.

thats true, id say there'd still be an only piano song in there somewhere. im not sure what exact songs will be on the album, but i think ampersand and point of it all would do well with some other instruments... anyone now if theres gunna be any ukulele songs on there? :P

So I fell asleep to The Living Room on the plane yesterday, and woke up to it again, which means it is fully ingrained my subconscious.  I don't mind it, as much, anymore.

However, I was thinking that a completely a cappela version of The Living Room would be pretty awesome.  The repetitive piano has gotten kind of soothing, but it seems intrusive at parts as well.  It's obvious to me that this was a song written for Amanda herself, and I think an a cappela version would do interesting things in terms of making things more raw and intimate.

I'm going to admit something now. I had NEVER even heard of the Umbrella song until the night after Sxip's Hour of Charm when someone put it on at the cloud club.

I was talking to someone and I suddenly hear this awful music and say "what the hell is this crap?"
I have not heard the song since until right now when a random mix of dolls songs came up in my library and the cover version came up.

Again I was like "what is this shit?"

What is the fascination? I didnt even know who the song was by until 10 minutes ago.

you aren't the only one. I had never heard of it until I watched the youtube video from the Fringe Festival.
I think the covers I've heard are far better than the real thing. But I'm not sure what the fascination is...

There's no real fascination, its just an utterly stupid song that is well over-played.

Amanda blogged about it a while ago.

i have a wonderdful friend who would give me a lift home from school everyday! only down point- his choice of music... this is when my mocking of umbrella began...

while we would sing dance and drive at once (we never crashed thankgod :P) I would over the top dance and sing a long screaming ELLA ELLA ELLA EH EH EH out the window... This wonderful form of self expression was given the name cruising.

although about the time amandas blogs on umbrella started we had moved to SHUT UP AND DRIVE! perhapsw she'll do that next :P ... or the classy ms britney spears's GIMME MORE... we made a cruisng dance to that one!

While in New York recently, I heard "Umbrella" while in a corner store. I have to admit that for just a split second, I felt like a trauma victim having a flashback.  :o  I think this is the first time a song has scarred my psyche.

I need Femme Fatal, the Velvet underground cover. Really.  I checked the links all ready here, they've expired.  I'll be your best friend if you upload it for me!

I Believe in Airplanes isn't a solo song, and neither is Will. You May Kiss the Bride is not going on the album either, so technically its shared even though there are no recordings, I think. And even though the old demo is fine, I think Provanity should be *'d. Also, why isn't 672 shared?

the only known recording of i believe in aeroplanes is performed solo.  until there's a recording of full band, i consider it a solo song.  will has been performed solo before.  as far as you may kiss the bride, the * means in circulation or not, not if it's shared.  provanity is in wide release.  and the feb. '06 versions of 672 aren't in circulation.

ahh, okay. thank you for that. then here are some more to add to the list.

Wow Sex changes has been performed solo. Is it shared?
Has anyone else ever thought the intro would sound great on violin?

The one that I have does that too, probably something wrong with the recording.

hey, thats what it is!! id forgotten the website. thats pretty much what you do. copy the url then chose the format you want it in the download it once its converted

I can't remember if i had to chop off the excess or not.

this is happening to me too, any chance someone could tell me how to use audacity to make it normal time, ive tried, but cant figure it out

Make sure you have the mp3 encoder dll file for Audacity.

Open the mp3 with audacity, and using the selection tool, select only the part of the mp3 you want; usually its whatever part you see, because the extra 30 or so minutes is blank space. So select the actual music and whatnot, hit file, then export selection as mp3. and you're done.

I'm cool with that. I went by the first post, but if they're not shareable any more, it's alright. Any of them that are still circulated, though, I'd be ecstatic to find a copy.
