He doesn't talk to the dogs, he just teaches people how to deal with them. He helps with extreme behavioral problems and stuff. I love that show.

ok true, but there was an episode where he was talking to a dog. literally, he was like "she wants her bone. she's telling me she wants her bone" when it was clearly underneath the couch and could be seen with the naked eye. oh wait, shit, that was a different show, not dog whisperer (fuckk) ok, I'll change it. but I don't remember the name of it.

but it's not just this one show, what about Dr. Phil? do you really feel the need to expose your problem outs there for the world to see? it's nice to know that you are addicted to sex and that you need help, but now your co-workers and friends know you're a [something]philiac.

and what about fear-factor? it was nice when it first came out but now they're doing the craziest shit to each other and people find it funny so see others electrocute themselves with high amounts of electricity to win 50 000 dollars.

what has the world come to? actually, what has the television evolved to? or am I just anti-television. I watch t.v. though, but I normally leave it on mute, or totally ignore it. unless of course Arthur is on or PMK or Are You Afraid of the Dark? you know, classic t.v. when shows weren't really fucked up.

Yeah, some shows are a little out there these days, but I think the dog whisperer is good as well. He just knows how to deal well with animals. Fear factor is a bit odd, I guess. But, if thats what they want to do to win a whole lot of money, then shit, let them do it!! Who cares? Don't watch it if you don't like it. I don't. And I could care less if it's on TV. Some people find it entertaining. There are a million channels on TV these days. I'm sure you're bound to find one of those old shows that used to catch your interest back in the day, if TV is your greatest source of entertainment.

you could have used a better examply. for example,

the following shows are not recognized by me as honest, television programming:

-- reality anything.
-- Flavor of Love, Charm School, or anything off VH1
-- Burn Notice
-- Trading Spouses, or any variation
-- all variations of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, with the exception of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader.
-- anything dealing with talent competitions. singing, dancing, SINGING THE LYRICS TO A SONG. TELEVISED KAREOKE IS NOT COOL.
-- All MtV programming. the only good shows they ever hard either involved playing music, Tom Green, or Jackass. and yeah, fuck you, i liked the Tom Greem Show.
-- Hell's Kitchen - what the fuck is this shit? Simon from American Idol, meets Food Network? Food Network has better programming, personally.
-- Rachel Ray, hands down (shut up, Rob. she is not hot, 'kthx?)
-- You know, just, god, Fox related ANYTHING. with the exception of House, Bones, and Greg the Bunny. bring back Greg the Bunny, you bastards.

you know, fuck it. i'm through. it's over. television SUCKS. and yes, Dog Whisperer is The Nanny, for animals. and if you ask me, kids are animals, so it's the same goddamn thing.

this rant is OVER.

^ agreed. especially about the "Flavor of Love" and its many spawns...and the karaoke thing. what the hell. two networks with idots singing bad 80s rock ballads. killmenow.

you forgot the dumb dancing shows. and the dumb "talent" show with david hasselhoff.

you know what's a brilliant show, though?

The Soup.

they just make fun of this garbage for an hour and it's 10x more funny than any episode of "Two and a Half Men" et al.

I preferred The Soup when the black girl hosted it, but it's always been nice.

And I love ESPN. It is to sports what MTV should be to music.

so ESPN does it to, eh? ~spanks the network~ i suppose you could also join CNN in that comparison, eh?

Two and a Half Men. primetime was never good, we just had more faith as kids.

the only SCRIPTED tv shows worth watching are "The Office" and "House"...sometimes "Entourage," but I think it's a bit contrived nowadays.

network television hates smart tv. look what happened to "Arrested Development."

if its dumb, has a lot of sex/fart/gay jokes in it, and runs under 22 minutes, it's a tv show.

don't worry. i'll change hollywhore around with some brilliant sitcom.

which, btw, will get 39483204 emmys...and then scrapped by some FOX/CBS/ABC/NBC exec who thinks people "just don't get it."

You referring to Gordon Ramsay there?  The way he describes to the audience how to make food... it's ridiculous. Like a drill sergeant. The camera-work is equally stupid.

okay, i agree with the office and entourage and of course, arrested development.  but house?  especially when talking about scripts...my god, it's the same every episode!

someone gets sick.
house is grumpy, but funny.
this is a weird sickness!
snarky comment from house.
they try to heal sick person.
it doesn't work.
house is sarcastic and mean.
they try something else.
it doesn't work.
house is sarcastic and mean.
house has a brilliant idea but it involves something sketchy or unethical.
big leader doctor woman (cutting?) says "no house, you can't do that!"
house does it anyways.
house's brilliant idea in the last 10-15 minutes of the episode works.
patient healed (note:  sometimes patient dies.  this is rare.)
house is grumpy/mean/sarcastic.
ftw!

It's a subtle variant to being grumpy/mean/sarcastic.

Honestly, as a past-present-future employee of a major television network, I agree with you guys. There are very few shows I watch these days, mostly "The Office", "30 Rock", "Studio 60", "Scrubs", "The Daily Show", "The Colbert Report" and pretty much anything on Bravo. Hah, after reading my list maybe I do watch a little too much TV!

But you can't expect executives to just hand you quality TV. I feel as though NBC offers the best selection of "smart" TV... a lot of my friends are really into "30 Rock" (written by Tina Fey) and a few of the other posters on this thread have cited "The Office" as a favorite. (OH dear god... I'm in love with John Krasinski!) but anyways, I think the problem is that it's way too easy for execs to throw away money on shows that are a gamble, because they can cancel the season halfway through and shunt the remaining money into another show waiting in the wings.

And, oh yeah: RIP "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". I fucking loved that show.

anyone remember "the apprentice"? :sleepy4: anyone who would actually want to go through a job interview which lasts months on national tv WITH donald trump, might i add, i would find a little crazy.  but whatever...people like money...
saturday night live used to be pretty good, but now it's more of a hit-or-miss.  i'd agree and say that 30 rock and the office are good, but other than that, i'll put in a dvd.

all the good TV-shows usually get cancelled after a season or two... (things that come to mind are Dead Like Me, Carnivale, or Queer As Folk (the UK version, the US version was total crap and basically just copied the UK version)

Good tv: Six Feet Under.

I have all the boxsets back in Finland, nngh.
And they showed reruns in here, UK, but ridiculously late, around 2am which got booted to 4-5am because of BB live. Now, even though Big Brother is my guilty pleasure (please don't hit me), I'd still rather watch good scripted drama. But it was too late even at 2am, for someone who has to wake up at 7am if not earlier to work.

actually, the last good television programming i watched was old school Ren and Stimpy. fuck. i'm fucked up as an adult for it, but goddamn how i couldn't have been primed for adulthood without it.

Stimpy
Remember the royal anthem of the kilted yaksmen!

Our country reeks of trees
Our yaks are really large
And they smell like rotting beef carcasses...
And we have to clean-up after them
And our saddle sores are the best.
We proudly wear women's clothing.
And searing sand blows up our skirts.
Ren and Stimpy
And buzzards, they soar overhead.
And poisonous snakes devour us whole.
Our bones will bleach in the sun.
Stimpy
That's it!
Ren and Stimpy
And we will probably go to * * * *.
And that is our great reward
For being the - uh - roy-yal
Canadian kilted yaksmen!

I mainly watch shows like Next or any other mindless dribble for shits and giggles. Primarily, the only shows that I care about are Will & Grace or The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson... and occassionally a Law & Order episode here and there. Bravo is starting to piss me off, though... Top Chef and Project Runway I don't mind so much, but their newer programming looks ridiculous. It also irks me a bit when brilliant shows are cancelled to make way for senseless junk. Take God, The Devil, and Bob - perfectly fine show... and it gets canned because people thought it was offensive to Christianity.

INT. HAWTHORNE GRILL AND DINER - DAY

Two surly men sit at a diner booth, each nursing a cup of black coffee and smoking a pack of Apple Brand cigarettes. They gaze around nonchalantly at the drabby, 1970s era decor---orange booths, patterned carpet, faux stone walls.

The younger of the two looks looks into his cup of coffee pensively before finishing the entire mug in one triumphant gulp. He sighs, pleased with himself. It looks as though he hasn't shaved in several days. This man is MATT MACHAO.

Matt takes a long, grubby index finger and wipes it slowly across the vinyl surface of the diner seat.

He speaks with a thick Texan drawl.

                                                            MATT
Hey, how'd you think this orange would look in the living room?

He glances across the able at his companion, MR. A---middle-aged, mysterious, visibly jaded.

Mr. A takes a long drag of his cigarette, eyeing the bright orange booths around the diner.

                                                           MR. A
         You're fucking kidding me, right?

                                                           MATT
Why would I be fuckin' kidding you when I asked you a fuckin' serious question, asshole?

                                                           MR. A
Because you know damn well that Wyatt ain't gonna go for no goddamn fuckin' orange in his goddamn living room!

He angrily extinguishes his cigarette on the booth. The vinyl smokes and hisses beneath the heat of the now spent cigarette.

                                                          MATT
I don't think you know Wyatt's taste very well then, A. I know Wyatt and I---

Mr. A slams his fist down on the table, rattling the cups of coffee, salt shakers, empty flower vase on its surface.

                                                         MR. A
Fuck it, man. You don't know shit 'bout Wyatt and where he came from and what he's done---let alone his motherfuckin' decorating taste!

                                                         MATT
I didn't spend no fifteen hours retiling the motherfucker's bathroom to not learn nothin' about his taste in interior design.

                                                         MR. A
I can't believe we're havin' this fuckin' argument again, MaChao.

                                                         MATT
We're only havin' in because you fuckin' started it.

                                                         MR. A
Ok. I fuckin' started it. But are we gonna do this now, or what?

Matt runs his hands nervously through his hair.

                                                         MATT
Not unless you agree that Wyatt's living room will look damn fuckin' good with fuckin'...

He struggles to find an appropriate phrase.

                                                        MATT (CONT'D)
Construction Cone Orange all over the goddamn walls.

                                                        MR. A
            Fuck no.

Matt shakes his head and laughs.

                                                        MATT
            You motherfucker.

                                                        MR. A
            Damn straight.

Unexpectedly, Mr. A and Matt leap up onto the diner tabletop, brandishing two 45's each. They wave them manically around the diner as they scream at the top of their lungs.

                                                       MR. A (CONT'D)
Everyone put your hands in the fuckin' air!

                                                       MATT
Sit still you fuckin' assholes or I'll blow your goddamn fuckin' heads off!

Katrina: some editing!

He glances across the able at his companion, MR. A---middle-aged bewitchingly distinguished, mysterious, visibly jaded dashing.

Mr. A takes a long drag of his cigarette sip of his Dasani bottled tap-water, eyeing the bright orange booths nubiles around the diner.

                                                           MR. A
You're fucking kidding me, right? I beg your pardon, sir?

                                                           MATT
Why would I be fuckin' kidding you when I asked you a fuckin' serious question, asshole?

                                                           MR. A
Because you know damn well that Wyatt ain't gonna go for no goddamn fuckin' orange in his goddamn living room! Matt just leave this to me!

He angrily extinguishes his cigarette on the booth. The vinyl smokes and hisses beneath the heat of the now spent cigarette. He suavely puts his bottled tap water on the counter.  The heat condenses precipitation on the bottle, the counter, and the customers, but Mr. A stays cool.  :coolsmiley:

                                                          MATT
I don't think you know Wyatt's taste very well then, A. I know Wyatt and I---

Mr. A slams his fist down on the table, rattling the cups of coffee, salt shakers, empty flower vase on its surface. Mr. A gives Matt a side-ways glance.

                                                         MR. A
Fuck it, man. You don't know shit 'bout Wyatt and where he came from and what he's done---let alone his motherfuckin' decorating taste!  Matt you're a wise man!

                                                         MATT
I didn't spend no fifteen hours retiling the motherfucker's bathroom to not learn nothin' about his taste in interior design.

                                                         MR. A
Reassuringly taps Matt on the shoulder, and exits stage left.

                                                         MATT

Matt runs his hands nervously through his hair.
Turns, glances at the table, and stares in shock and disbelief at the $20 tab Mr A. has left him for bottle tap water.

Heroes is ok.
We just had a really good kids programme on called the Sorcerers Apprentice,
which involved taking a bunch of kids, putting them in an old mansion for 3 weeks and teaching them how to become stage magicians. Good reality TV.... it actually encouraged a whole load of otherwise normal British Kids to seriously think about doing creative and imaginitive things rather than hanging around town centres.

and I've noticed that a lot of cartoons that contain animals as characters always, ALWAYS let the main character have a name meanwhile all his/her friends have names that depict the obvious. example: Franklin the Turtle all his friends names were: bear, duck, goose, Mr. Owl and so on. well not all cartoons with animals have this strange phenomena but a lot of them do. thank-god Arthur isn't like that or else i wouldn't be watching it everyday or that other show.... what's it called?? Timothy Goes to School.

I'll admit I watch t.v. but usually cartoons and stuff on the discovery channel, comedy central mostly cartoons on that channel. basically anything except for gameshows because those gameshows have become really insane. and I hate seeing them when families are being talked to by the hosts and the host will ask "so why do you want to win 1 000 000 dollars?" and the guy will say "well my family is really poor and we really need the money to buy ourselves a house and pay off our debts and help us survive" and at the end they'll only win like a couple hundred bucks, which is good but won't really help that much. its a little bit sad don't you think?

TV seems pretty good to me....

Iron Chef is still going strong and Alton Brown has joined me in the bearded non-harley motorcycling community  :headbang:

Feasting on Asphalt 2 is coming out so more BMW Boxer action around the US combined with good food, what is there not to love (except that Im not the still photographer for the trip)

Project Runway season 4 is coming with Tim Gunn

History Channel is doing a show called the "universe" but I missed the one on the inner planets (my planetary fetish is for venus)

Science Channel is pimping as always and with my soon to be HDTV I will love Discovery even more.

Rescue Me is being amazing as always (what do you expect with dennis leary)

Metalocalypse's 2nd season is coming (as is Dethklok's debut album)

Now for the bad......

Dane Cook is on it anywhere I mean how much worse can you get than him, and hes doing ads for MLB now what kinda BS is this? I know Dennis Leary is already doing the NHL but hell he loves the sox just as much and was in a baseball related ad for mastercard, MLB and the rest of the world wake up, Dane Cook sucks, damn Arlington Kids!!!

actually, the last good television programming i watched was old school Ren and Stimpy. fuck. i'm fucked up as an adult for it, but goddamn how i couldn't have been primed for adulthood without it.

Ren and Stimpy is the best!  And my boys are now fans, as I rented the video and they kept asking to watch it.  They sing the Muddy Mudskipper song and the Log song.  Bad mother, I know.

Alton Brown is great fun to watch.  And as for Gordon Ramsay, I love "Hell's Kitchen", actually.

I like the Price is Right.

After a long day selling shoes, I like to watch simple stuff on TV, while Wanda is fixing me supper.  I don't like confuzzing shows like Access Hollywood.  Keeping Paris and Hohan straight is too hard.  just simple for me.
Bob Barker is a awesum host, and if you can guess the prizes of the items you can actually win big!  If you're a contestant on the televison...

I was lucky enough to see an episode filmed around October when Bob was still hosting. It was uber awesome....Except for the fact that I wasn't picked from our USC group...and the girl who won, won a Corvette. I would have sold that shit fo sho!

It's just that cable adds to the total number of viewing options, which allows for specialization and such. In some cases, time needs to be killed, which means finding something to throw on the air and to employ people. That's how you end up with stupid shit like pet psychics and, well, psychics in general. A few good-to-great shows pop up along the way, but most of what's out there is nothing more than employment fodder, IMO. Always has been, always will be.

six feet under is brilliant (yes, yes, i've said it many times before) for many reasons.  the plot and character development (oh god, the characters!) are superb.  follow it from beginning to end; it's wonderful.

arrested development is make second favorite show OF ALL TIME.  the writing is fantastic.

and lately, i've been watching (and by that, i mean downloading and watching on my computer):
big love
the larry sanders' show
and i just started watching deadwood yesterday.  not sure how i feel about it so far, but it was a killer season premier.  i'm really not too much for sitting down and watching tv, but i'll admit to getting hooked on a show on dvd or that i download and watching a lot of it in a short time.

silly child.  I am always present, silently wielding my power.

Just follow her next time you see her head into the bathroom, and corner her. Women love that shit.

I saw season 1 of Arrested Development at the library today. I remembered everyone here saying how good it is, so I decided to check it out.

don't disappoint me, shadowbox!

Hate to burst your bubble, A, but Drew Carey is now the host of The Price is Right. Barker retired earlier this year.

WHAT!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOO. I like drew carey, but nooooooo.

Who can you think of that could be a suitable replacement? I'm interested to see how this one works out.

they could've gotten the one and only amanda palmer to host the show. actually if you think about it, what if they did get her to host the show?

BBC America is on the Direct TV package that I recently hooked up.  In addition to Absolutely Fabulous which I have missed since they stopped airing it on Comedy Central years ago, I now get to watch The Brittish version of The Office.  I saw it for the first time last night.  It is hilarious.  I think that the American version is  just as good , but in a different way. Coupling is also quite good.

1 month & 3 seasons of Arrested Development later, and I agree with you. It's a very good show (maybe not the best, but close). I also think season 2 is the best, closely followed by season 1. Season 3 wasn't as good, so maybe it's good that it ended when it did. Another thing is that I don't think I would have liked it as much if I had watched it on TV, you know, a new episode each week. Now I usually watched 2 or more episodes back to back, so... I don't know. it's very good!

you know, due to my boyfriend's inability to continue the flow of thoughts into his mind, i have been watching television while at his house. his excuse? he needs ambient noise. a reason not to think. a wind down. he deserves to suffer his brain cells after building them up with productive activities during the day.

whatever.

i have only found one show so far that caught my interest. it's on the Food Network. ummmm, Dinner: Impossible. that's a great show.
