Things you shouldn't do in public
« on: June 29, 2008, 06:45:29 PM »

There is the chick at my work (office environment) that thinks it is acceptable to clip  her fingernails at her desk.
I do not think this is acceptable.  I liken it to flossing your teeth at your desk or even shaving your armpits.
So I got fed up and emailed my manager and said I found a stray finger nail in my cubicle (lie).
He said he would have a chat with her for me. (It may have been the wussy way out, but I could not think of a way to tactfully tell her
"I think you are disgusting and what you are doing turns my stomach, please stop"---and by the way I hope she was deeply ashamed of herself when our manager spoke with her.)

Anyhoo -
What behaviors have you witnessed in public that really burn you?
Do you think I'm an uptight asshole that overrated in the above situation?

There are always letters being printed in the free London papers from men complaining about women applying make-up on the tube and buses. "I don't want to see you gurning into mirrors.." blah blah.

I don't get that really. Yeah I suppose you should do it before you leave the house, in your bathroom mirror.. but really.. who the fuck cares? Look away!

They also complain about women wearing flip-flops for some reason.

Occasionally there will be a letter from a woman complaining about men who wear sandals-and-socks in public. Or men who don't give up their seats for pregnant women. Or men who stare. Or men who have BO. Or people in general who have their ipods up too loud.

The only thing that bothers me a bit is eating in the street. People who walk down the street stuffing fast food into their mouths as they walk. You know.. open pizza box in one hand, greasy slice in the other, chomping away. I always think "can't you wait til you get home and eat like a civilized person?" (But I always assume that's just me being weird about food, the mental detritus of a former bulimic... I hate eating in public in general. Even in restaurants.)

I think over use of perfume is a big no-no.
And BO is a no brainer.

I hate people with socks and sandals, HATE THEM.

Too much perfume is also annoying, some of my calassmates, while eating the breakfast told me it was disgusting to put my bread inside my cup of chocolate, why is that? i found that incredibly absurd.

just because you don't like something somebody does in public, doesn't mean the world will stop doing it. Rats, it was absolutely wrong of you to get a girl in trouble, simply because she clips her fingernails, and you don't like it. if i ever found out that a person got me in trouble for doing something petty, and they also lied about it, i would take them out back, and beat them. at least if i beat a person, then when i get in trouble for it, it will be something i actually did that was actually wrong.

as for things people do in public, i hate to agree with Lentower, but i hate you smokers. i do, but you will eventually die (early and painfully), so really i am not exceptionally bothered.

you shouldn't fucking chew with your mouth open in public, or in private.

that is something that peeves me probably more than anything else in the world.

People who don't say "thank you" when I hold the door for them and then look at me like I'm crazy when I scream "YOU'RE WELCOME!!" at them.

If someone's behavior does not impede your progress or threaten you, it should fall into the live and let live category.

For crying out loud, personal offense has women on the ropes for trying to breastfeed their children.

If one more person gives me the evil eye for feeding my daughter in public, I will whip out a breast and use it as a milk filled water pistol.

I find it offensive that people object to it. Some of the arguments are positively obtuse. In response to the declaration that it's a natural process, some people will declare that so is taking a shit... but we don't allow that on buses.

Well... because one is waste and can spread disease and foul odors. The other is the sustenance of life. We have become so wrapped up in our prudishness that we have to sexualize and burden everything with shameful association. It's like the fucking dark ages.

So true. I think it may actually be even worse in the US than it is here in Oz.

Yosmark - One day you'll grow up and hopefully grow out of the stupid notion that there is something wrong with breast milk. I actually find the thought using/consuming the milk of another species to be far more revolting.
